2 Losing Track of Time: The Benefits of Using Clocks for Dementia By Ava M. Stinnett Memory Corner How did it get so late so soon? It s night before it s afternoon. December is here before it s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon? (Dr. Seuss) We know that aging and dementia-related disorders such as Alzheimer s disease can cause confusion, memory loss, and difficulty performing everyday activities. Another symptom of Alzheimer s disease involves losing track of time, dates, and seasons of the year. As the disease progresses, it may also be more difficult to differentiate between night and day. Although calendars may help those affected, it s important to keep in mind that a person with Alzheimer s not only forgets to look at the calendar but they often forget how to read a calendar. For example, the person with Alzheimer s might suppose that the sixth day of the month on the calendar refers to the sixth month of the year. When it comes to keeping track of time, a large easy-to-read clock may seem like a good idea. But your loved one may not know how to interpret what the hands on the face of a clock mean. They may ask you repeatedly what day or what time it is, perhaps because they forgot that they d just asked you. If a loved one can t determine what day it is, what year it is, or even what time of day it is, how can they be expected to remember whether they ve taken the day s medication or if they have a medical appointment or plans for a visitor to stop by? As caregivers, we may not realize that it s common for those with Alzheimer s to feel confused or too embarrassed to admit that they can no longer read or make sense of a calendar, a clock, or a watch. Fortunately, there are a variety of clocks on the market that are designed specifically to help people with dementia. Sometimes referred to as Alzheimer s clocks or dementia user-friendly clocks, they help those affected by the disease keep track of dates and times in a way that helps them maintain the routine, structure, and focus they need to ease confusion and anxiety. When shopping for a clock, look for the following features: Clear and simple display of time, day of the week, month, and year Images to indicate whether it is morning, afternoon, evening, or night Clearly visible at night without being too bright Easy to set up Tamper-proof buttons to avoid accidental interference There is an increasing amount of evidence about the benefits of using clocks for dementia. An understanding of the correct time, day, and date can reduce stress and help those with dementia feel less alone or lost in the past. When they are able to stay anchored in the present, independence is improved and, perhaps, they will feel as if they are functioning the same way as everyone else.

11 What is the quarterly Creation Contest? Our Memory Care resident s spend three months creating a unique interpretation of a famous piece of art. Each community then submits their creation and one is honored for its creativity and uniqueness. During the first quarter of 2016 the piece of art that was selected was the group of paintings called Water Lilies by Claude Monet. Congratulations Sacramento! Join us in congratulating Sacramento on their creative interpretation of Claude Monet s Water Lilies! Each resident and manager helped to create lilies and water out of a variety of materials like tissue paper, table cloths, scrapbook paper and IMAGINATION. Sacramento unveiled their creation at their monthly Candle Light Dinner where dessert was served on a paint pallet, staff were dressed in paint covered aprons, and family could walk though an art gallery of Monet s other paintings.

12 Empowered Living By Ruby MacDonald Dewitt Jones I walked into our living room, sat down and picked up one of two books which have been on our coffee table for months. During the day, I seldom take time to simply sit down and enjoy a good book. But today my eye was drawn to the treasure that has been lying on the glass table. It has a light green cover that is curling upward now and the personal inscription inside has faded, for I ve had it over twenty years. It is a treasured possession because Helen, the woman who gave it to me, had been an older woman who worked at Nordstrom s in Vancouver, Washington, and sent it to me after her retirement with a note that is still tucked into its pages. She writes that she thinks of me every time she looks through it, and now she wants me to have it. She inked in a large asterisk on the photos and poetry she loved the most. Helen died shortly after her retirement but I think of her with great feeling even though we were not friends in the traditional way. NIGHT IS DRAWING NIGH Dag Hammarskjold This book titled,, with photos by the well known photographer, Dewitt Jones, and includes quotes from famous people, has lain there month after month. The only time it is touched is when the dust cloth caresses it. But today the covers were opened and the great treasures came tumbling out and I wondered --- how many books or photo albums do you have that may be crying to be opened so that they can spill the abundance of warm memories trapped between the covers? Through the years I have created at least thirty photo albums, usually one per year during the time that Tom and I have been married. When the children were still at home I used to change coffee table albums every month so we could enjoy the photos together and reminisce. However, now the children have homes of their own; and we live such busy lives that we seldom think to sit down with an album and let the memories flow. And when they come to visit from out of state, looking at photos doesn t seem to be a priority. Dag Hammarskjold. In each book or album that you treasure, that your fingers have lovingly caressed as you secured photos onto the pages so that your life will not be forgotten by the next generations, are the treasures of a lifetime waiting to be enjoyed repeatedly with someone dear, or by yourself. Open the pages slowly, take time to think back to the event, relive it, savor it, and embrace it with open arms. I find that photos bring back memories that had been long forgotten but can be refreshed as though they happened yesterday. You need not limit this to photos albums. Perhaps you have treasured scrapbooks tucked away someplace, filled with programs, tickets, pressed flowers, treasured greeting cards, and more. We have several Memory boxes filled with scrapbooks or zip lock bags that bulging with a year s worth of memories, with the year written in black on the outside. Don t wait any longer to enjoy what you ve collected. Night is drawing nigh--- Written by our beloved Ruby MacDonald Annie Dillard
