At the time, Le Marais was populated by artisans, with their workshops nestled in the inner courtyards. It was in this historic district that thirteen Parisian spectacle makers, driven by the passion of their craft and beautiful workmanship, came together to create their frame manufacturing company. The company grew quickly, acquiring factories in the East of France and diversified its activities, also producing, notably, corrective lenses. By the end of the nineteenth century, it began to export to Europe and the rest of the world. Rewarded for the quality of its products at several universal exhibitions, it became internationally renown and, at the dawn of the new millenium, had emerged as a leading player in the optics and eyeglass trade. With its historical know-how and expertise, it was positioned at the forefront of technology, with innovation as its trademark. The collections developed were testament to perfect mastery of the eyewear trade, and were set apart both by the elegant styling and the diversity of materials used. More than a century after its creation, and still at the forefront of the industry, in 1955 Société des Lunetiers invented Nylor, a minimalist and refined frame that uses a nylon thread for lightness and visual comfort. This technique was unprecedented in the market at the time, but has become a must for the entire eyewear industry. Four years later, it again revolutionized the world of optics by launching the first progressive ophthalmic lens. The famous Varilux lens was born.
