1 Brighton Hill Community School -Summer Uniform policy. Effective 3 May 2016 Expectations All students are expected to wear the correct school uniform at all times, and to conduct themselves appropriately when representing the school. This also applies when students are off site and in the school community. Parents should contact their child s Tutor/ Head of Year, if there are any personal circumstances affecting their child wearing the correct uniform, in order that provisions for a swift resolution may be made. Application of the uniform policy It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child comes to school in the correct uniform. Form tutors are responsible for monitoring uniform daily and in the case of any concerns regarding the standard of dress and therefore the application of the uniform policy the tutor will send their tutee to the uniform HUB, which is a centralised monitoring system, for further monitoring. Where appropriate, a uniform permit may be issued or the student lent the appropriate item of uniform for the remainder of the day, e.g. a school tie. In the case of a severe infringement of the uniform policy (e.g. wrong style of trouser / skirt too short) students may be sanctioned; for example a detention may be set. All staff take a shared responsibility for implementing and, if necessary enforcing the uniform policy. A student not wearing correct uniform or whose appearance is otherwise causing concern (e.g. makeup /excessive jewellery) will in the first instance be referred by his/her tutor and where appropriate their Head of Year. In the event of repeated uniform infringements parents will be contacted and the student may be sent home in order to sort out the uniform problem before returning promptly to school. In the case of excessive jewellery and other unacceptable accessories, the student will be asked to remove the item, which in some cases may result in these items being confiscated. Please note that confiscated items will only be returned to parents from the school office. Where necessary, the Headteacher will make the final decision in all matters of uniform and dress. 2 Summer Uniform effective from 3 rd May July 2016 From Tuesday 3 rd May 2016 students in all years can choose to wear either the: BHCS summer polo shirt - with the optional BHCS jumper (this may not be worn with the blazer) OR Autumn / winter uniform -shirt and tie for all students. This can be worn with the optional* BHCS jumper or the Blazer if chosen. The Blazer is not compulsory for the summer term, from Tuesday 3 rd May Students are not permitted to mix the summer and A/W uniform, e.g. students wearing a regular shirt must also wear a tie. All of the A/W uniform regulations still apply for uniform items worn below the waist e.g. appropriate skirt, trousers and shoes etc. * Optional item of uniform Item of uniform BHCS Summer polo shirt Shirt / Blouse Available to be purchased from Skoolkit Guidance / description Yellow polo shirt with Blue tramlines around the collar with BHCS logo on the chest Students may wear the optional school jumper over the top of their summer polo shirt. Items / uniform variations not permitted No other colour or style of polo shirt is permitted to be worn during the summer term. No other T shirt is permitted to be worn underneath the summer polo shirt. Applicable if choosing to wear the Autumn / Winter uniform All boys in year 7-11 are expected to wear a Brighton Hill Daffodil yellow shirt. Students may not wear the blazer or any other cardigan or jumper (which is not the BHCS jumper) over the top of their summer polo shirt. No other colour shirt / blouse is permitted to be worn. Girls in year 7-10 must wear a shirt and not a blouse so as to accommodate the school tie (please see guidance on the tie) Girls in year 11 are permitted to wear a blouse, but may wear a shirt and tie if they choose to do so. Tie when worn with a shirt Standard BHCS tie, worn with 6 visible stripes Girls in year 11 are not expected to wear a tie as they are permitted to wear a blouse, although may do so (with a shirt not a blouse) if they wish. Blazer Brighton Hill blazers can be worn if chosen, with the Autumn / Winter uniform only (shirt and tie) in the summer term. Blazers are not permitted to be worn when choosing to wear the summer polo shirt

3 Trousers Boys Trousers Girls Plain black BHCS recommends Skoolkit as the supplier of this item GPR style trouser from Skoolkit is the preferred style of trouser for girls. Plain black (polyester /wool mix). BHCS recommends Skoolkit as the main supplier of this item. The BHS retailer style trouser (code: ) can also be worn. If your child chooses this style of trouser and opts to wear a belt this must be plain black, small and plain in style with no other variations. Skirt Pleated Charleston style skirt, Plain black. BHCS recommends Skoolkit as the supplier of this item Shoes Socks (boys) Socks (girls) Tights *Jumpers *T-Shirts / Undershirts *Coat However, the Charleston style skirt can also be found in M&S (code: T760171) Plain black traditional style shoes suitable for school use. Appearance Guidance / description Variations not permitted Earrings One conventional, gold coloured stud no bigger than 4mm can be worn in each ear lobe only. Students may only have their ears pierced ONCE in each ear lobe. It is strongly advised that students wishing to have their ears pierced should do so at the beginning of the summer holiday, so as to avoid the need for spacers and / or additional piercings to close up. Hair Students are permitted to colour their hair, however this must be of a natural colour (i.e. blonde, black, brown) and should be uniform in nature. No other style of earring is permitted. No other body jewellery is permitted. No spacers, belly button piercings, nose studs, tongue piercings or any other facial piercings are allowed to be worn. student having to remove the piercing, being isolated or sent home. No other colour other than that stated can be applied. Students are not permitted to have any markings or tramlines shaved into their hair cut. No extreme haircuts permitted, e.g. Mohicans. 5 Headphones Tattoos Make-up Headphones / earphones are not permitted to be visible or worn in school. It is a criminal offence to tattoo anyone under 18 unless a qualified medical practitioner does it for medical reasons. Any incidences of tattoos will be investigated by the school as an issue of child protection. Make-up is not permitted to be worn at any time. This includes blusher, mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow and lipstick. items being confiscated. student having to remove all traces of make-up. Persistent wearing of make-up will result in a higher sanction.
