2 Costume Information Costumes for Parades Our costumes are reminiscent of the Fabulous Fifties. Specifically 1950 s Cocktail attire. Soft, feminine, romantic. These words best describe 50 s evening wear. Christian Dior is credited with coining the term "cocktail" dress. Cocktail dresses were made from an array of materials including silk, lace, satin, taffeta and chiffon and were typically designed in solid colors or floral prints. The bodices of cocktail dresses were high-necked or v-necked. Dresses were typically made sleeveless or with wide collars, spaghetti straps or ¾ length sleeves. Cocktail dresses with swing skirts cinched at the waist and puffed out throughout the length of the skirt were quite popular. Matching shawls were often worn, as were gloves and hats. A woman was not seen as properly dressed without her gloves and hat. Fifties Hairstyles were soft and curly, a look attained by a process of pin curling and rolling. Shoes were either spiked or stiletto heels. The ballet slipper was also a popular choice as were patent leather flats. Makeup for evening was very dramatic. Eyeliner was liquid, making a sharp, highly defined contour. Red lipstick was the most popular choice for evening. Clothing for men was quite simple. Dark brown, dark blue or charcoal suits, white shirts with narrow necktie in a dark color and most definitely a hat. Men wore fedora hats in the Fifties. Not sometimes. All the time. 3 Philanthropy In addition to being a social organization, philanthropy is an essential component of who we are. The focus of our Krewe is our devotion to women helping women. This heartfelt belief allows us to participate in a wide variety of philanthropic events that support our purpose. Our Krewe strives to contribute to a worthwhile organization. 4 All applicants myst be at least 21 years old. Krewe of Girls N Pearls Application Process Upon approval, all members agree to uphold with highest regard the by-laws and standing rules of the Krewe. To remain an active member in good standing, you must pay dues in accordance with the bylaws and board policies, and participate in at least two Krewe service functions per year. This does not include parades. We will expect you to participate in parade duties. These include preparade float setup, after parade float clean-up, securing security at the parade, and/or arriving at the float to make sure all is set up and all is taken down after the parade. We encourage our members to participate in many of the functions available to its members, as well as serve the Krewe on one or more committees.
