3 SIP PROTECTION Your safety is our priority. Since more than 25 years, SIP Protection is investing in development, design and production of protective clothing for chain saw users. In 2001 SIP Protection joined the Sioen Industries group. Thanks to the groups support, product developments and innovations increased heavily. The protective system used in SIP Protection clothing is a combination of a number of immobilization and speed reduction principles of the saw chain. Because of the unique features of the patented SIP anti-cut material, we can manufacture products, which comply with the European standard EN 381, and which are light, comfortable and easy to maintain. SIP Protection has its own R&D department, where all garments are developed and tested. Our testing facilities allow to find solutions to specific demands of chain saw users. In this way, we obtain balance between security and comfort. SIOEN LABORATORY: PICTURE OF THE CHAIN SAW TEST For all our practice tests, we appeal to professional users, who extensively test our garments during their daily activities. They pay a lot of attention to ergonomics, quality and comfort and communicate their findings. On the basis of this information, we can improve our products according to the users needs. 4 NORMS AND STANDARDS Your safety is our priority. The pictograms which you can find on the inside of your protective clothing, reflect the different levels of protective requirements which have been set in the framework of the European Standards. The higher te value for a parameter, the higher the level of protection. EN 381 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT PROTECTION AGAINST HAND-HELD CHAIN SAWS The European standard EN 381 complies with protective clothing for chain saw users. This norm is divided into different parts (or designs). Each part treats a specific part of the body: - EN : requirements for leg protectors - EN : requirements for chain saw protective gloves - EN : requirements for chain saw protective gaiters - EN : requirements for upper part of the body The norm also prescribes 4 classes that correspond to the chain speed with which the tests have been done. - Class 0 : 16 m/s - Class 1 : 20 m/s - Class 2 : 24 m/s - Class 3 : 28 m/s Not all the classes are authorized in each part of the norm (see further for details). Unless indicated otherwise, all tests have, within the frame of the norm, been carried out after 5 washes at 60 C and line dried 5 times. SIP Protection clothing complies with norm EN 381. Constant quality control and our personal care for your safety, guarantees that all SIP Protection products are high performance. The classes above may not be confused with the PPE categories. Protective clothing for chain saw users is classified under category 2 (Personal Protective Equipment), but this has nothing to do with class 2 of norm EN On your protective garments, you ll always find the type (if applicable), the class and picto of the EN 381 norm. 5 EN PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT - LEG PROTECTORS PROTECTION AGAINST HAND-HELD CHAIN SAWS This part specifies the demands for leg protection wear and defines three types (or designs) of leg protection wear, according to the kind of protection: - The clothes of type A and B are mainly intended to be used for forestry work by professional lumber jacks who have been trained and informed. - The clothes of type C are intended to be used, either by people who normally don t work with chain saws or in exceptional situations. TYPE A TYPE B TYPE C FRONT BACK FRONT BACK FRONT BACK Type A or front protection covers each leg partly (180 ) and 5 cm to the interior part of the right leg and 5 cm to the exterior part of the left leg. Protection starts at max. 5 cm from the bottom of the leg and ends at min. 20 cm above the crotch. Type B is identical to type A but has an extra 5 cm of protection to the interior part of the left leg Type C covers each leg all around (360 ). The protection starts at max. 5 cm from the bottom of the leg and ends at min. 20 cm above the front side of the crotch and at min. 50 cm under the back side of the crotch. Protective area For types A and B the protection must be fixed permanently on the sides of the protective padding. The fixing of the protection must resist to a force of min. 200 N. Class 0 (16 m/s) is not applicable to the EN standard. 6 EN(V) 342 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT PROTECTION AGAINST COLD This standard determines the requirements for personal protective clothing to be worn at temperatures under -5 C. Furthermore, there are also combined performance materials (simultaneously fluorescent and retro-reflective). 7 CE MARK EUROPEAN NORMS The CE mark indicates the compliance with the fundamental health and safety requirements from the European directive 89/686. All SIP Protection products meet the EC stipulations and are certified and marked as doing so. MAINTENANCE OF YOUR CHAIN SAW PROTECTION CLOTHING Protection system is based on long fibres which are extracted out of the protection system and obstruct the chain saw (see picture testing laboratory page 3). It is of crucial importance that the fibres can easily be extracted out of the protection system and are not blocked because of: - Heat: hot motor - Dirty and grease: not washed - Shrinkage: wrong washing - not above 60 C, do not centrifuge & tumble dry - Wrong stitching: avoid wrong reparation - only repair exterior layer en don t stitch through protection SIP Protection clothing may one day save your life, only if all instructions supplied with the garments are carefully followed. A 10 mm thick ARMORTEX fibre, for example, can resiste to a pull strength of 2400 kilogrammes. The TEXXION outer fabric has been specifically developed together with our manufacturer for the Progress range. The fabric consists of 86% CORDURA, to comply with the most stringent working conditions, together with 14% SPANDEX, which permits the fabric to expand in 4 directions to provide maximum flexibility and comfort. The fabric has also been treated with TEFLON HT, which makes the fabric water, oil and dirt repellent. All these elements provides more durability, longer lasting use and provide a higher level of protection. Least but not last, the reinforcements with ARMORTEX (based on 31% Kevlar ) on the knees and other vulnerable points, makes this collection even more outstanding. CORDURA is a polyamid fibre developed by DuPont and is up to 3 times more durable than a polyester fibre. It is optimally resistant to abraision, tears and intensive use. The Progress range is especially suited for the most demanding tree surgeon, as well for in the trees as on the ground.
