INFORMATION This information has been compiled as an aid for all new and existing cadets of 2484 (Bassingbourn) Squadron. It has been designed to increase the uniformity of all our cadets and to make sure that they are wearing all uniform in a clean, serviceable and appropriate manner. This guide will describe how each uniform is made up, what a cadet is entitled to be issued and how each item should be ironed and worn. Remember you should be ironing your own uniform as your mum will not be away on camp with you when you must do it yourself! It is the responsibility of each individual cadet to report their own faulty or worn out uniform.

Once this is done flip the trouser leg over and iron the other side. Then starch and iron in. Repeat process for the back half of the trouser leg. Repeat for other leg. How to Wear The trousers should be worn on the waist line and secured by a belt. 18 POLISHING SHOES Brand New Shoes: 1) Start by arranging the equipment you will require - Cup of water - Bag of cotton wool - Tin of Kiwi black polish - Tin of Kiwi black parade gloss - Newspaper 2) Arrange the newspaper to work on. 3) Take a ball of cotton wall and soak it in the water. Wring out the excess water and rub on plenty of black polish. 4) Begin to work polish into the toecap of your shoe. Do this in little circles and keep on applying until the polish has almost completely disappeared from the cotton wool. 5) Take a new piece of cotton wool and repeat this process 4 5 times. This should take approximately one hour on a brand new shoe. (It can help to sit down in front of the television to do this.) 6) Now use the same action to apply polish to the rest of the shoe. Divide it into four sections to work on: - Upper - Left side - Right side - Back NEXT PAGE

POLISHING SHOES PART 2 7) Keep on working polish into these sections but ensure that all sections have the same amount of layers. 8) Take your parade gloss and with a wet piece of cotton wall repeat the same procedure as you have with the black shoe polish, 3-4 layers. 9) As the toe cap becomes smoother ease off the amount of polish you are applying. 10) Use a dry piece of cotton wall the dab off the beads of water. 11) Again take a piece of wet cotton wool and parade gloss and repeat process over the 4 other sections of the shoe, 2-3 layers. A brand new pair of shoes can take up to 4 hours to reach a suitable standard. This more practice the easier it becomes. Remember to keep working on them to produce a good standard! Well Maintained Shoes: 1) Apply 1 layer of black polish followed by 2 layers of parade gloss. 2) Run under cold water and buff with a piece of cotton wool with no polish. 3) Dab off water drops with a dry piece of cotton wool.

You will need to carry on with the off brush until a deep shine starts to appear on your boot. (Unlike parade shoes the entire boot needs to have the same deep shine all over.) 4) Use the yellow duster and water to remove and dirt from the welts of the boots.

Multi Terrain Pattern known as MTP is the current British military standard and is replacing CS95. 30 MTP PART 2 MTP Multi Terrain Pattern Wash and dry the Combat Uniform as per the instructions 40C and normal tumble dry. Don t nuke it! DO iron the uniform normally. But Don t try and press creases in it. You will damage it. Don t iron the Touch & Close fastening (Velcro). It will melt it. Washing and Ironing have no effect on the clothing IRR properties MTP : How to Wear Trousers to be worn on hips. Trousers to be worn with S 95 Belt. Light Weight Jacket to be worn tucked in with sleeves rolled down, unless told to roll up. Windproof smock to be worn straight, fastened up the front, sleeves rolled down.

HAIR MALE Male cadets must have a short back and side haircut. It cannot protrude onto the top of the collar or ears and the neck must be completely shaven. (As a guide use grade 4 back and sides.) Any cadet over the age of 16 must shave before each parade night and every day whilst away. Those male cadets, who are under 16, but starting to develop facial hair, must shave.

HAIR AND MAK UP FEMALE Female cadets are to arrange their hair in a tight bun held in place with pins and hair spray. The bun is to be secured in a hair net which matches, as close as possible, the natural colour of their hair. Female cadets who are unable to tie their hair into a bun are to secure it but the hair is not to grow any longer than the base of the collar. Again the hair is to be held in place with pins. Makeup: Female cadets are strongly encouraged to not wear makeup but if they must they are to only use subtle and unnoticeable tones. This is to produce a natural look and should not damage their uniform in any way! Nail varnish is not to be worn.

JEWLLERY AND TRINKETS Males. In the case of male personnel, the wearing of watch-chains and trinkets in such a manner as to be seen is not permitted when wearing uniform. The wearing of a wedding ring and/or one other plain signet or precious metal ring is permitted. A watch of inconspicuous style may also be worn. Thumb rings and tie pins are not permitted. Earrings are not to be worn. Females. Female personnel are forbidden to wear jewellery when in uniform. They may, however wear a wedding and/or engagement ring plus one other plain metal ring. Thumb rings are not permitted. A watch of inconspicuous style may also be worn. Additionally, if ears are pierced, one small, unobtrusive plain yellow gold spherical stud earring may be worn in each ear lobe at all times except when on parade. Charity Wristbands. Policy regarding the wearing of charity wristbands is reviewed annually. Personnel may wear either of the following wristbands with No 2 and dress variants, RAFA, RAFBF and the Help the Heroes wristband In addition to those already listed cadets only, may wear the RAFA Youth wristband. Wristbands are not to be worn with formal orders of dress or for any other dress Inspections. The OC Wing / Sqn Ldr CCF HQAC shall be the arbiter upon what is or not an appropriate environment or occasion to wear charity wristbands.

BODY PIERCING All Personnel. Where any part of the body, other than the ear lobe for women, has been pierced or prepared, whether for any ring, stud or sleeper, no such items are to be worn when on duty. Similarly, when not in uniform but on duty or representing the ACO, the wearing of body piercing jewellery, trinkets or rings etc is not permitted, nor at any time when it may be seen to hold the ACO in disrepute or adversely reflect upon the RAF. This ruling includes tongue studs.

STARCHING YOUR UNIFORM Launder your uniform. Starting the process with a clean uniform is important for getting good results. Be sure that you do not use fabric softener on the rinse cycle. Doing so will cause the fabric of the uniform to be too soft and will make starching it difficult. Heat the iron. Turn the iron on and put it on the cotton setting. This will ensure that the iron gets hot enough to get the results that you want. Be sure to turn the steam setting off. Having the steam setting on will not allow the starch to work properly. Starch the shirt. Lay the shirt on the ironing board so that one of the front halves is on the ironing board. Spray the starch liberally onto the uniform; you want to hold it about two inches away from the fabric while spraying. Immediately start ironing the uniform in quick, short strokes. Turn the shirt on the ironing board so that you can move to the back of it. Follow the same directions for spraying the starching. You will then iron the other half of the shirt using the same method. The sleeves should be done next.

Back STARCHING PART 2 Grab the sleeves and make sure you follow the seam from the shoulder to make a crease when you put it on the board for ironing. The end result should give you a sharp crease down the outside of the sleeve. Go over this area a couple of times with the iron, starching it each time, to get sharp, neat creases. Iron the collar. Place the shirt on the ironing board so that the collar is at the tip of the board. Continue ironing it like you did the rest of the shirt. You will most likely have to go over this area a couple of times, as well. When you are finished, the collar should lay flat and neat. Iron the trousers. Turn the trousers upside down so that you can grab the fabric by the leg holes. Make creases down the front of the trousers by placing one pant leg at a time sideways on the ironing board. Spray liberally with starch and put pressure on the iron to get sharper creases. Repeat the process with the other trouser leg.

TEMPORARY/NATIONAL EMBLEMS No unauthorised ornament or emblem is to be worn with uniform. The following exceptions are permitted: a. Royal British Legion Poppy. The poppy may be worn from the onset of sales and until the National and local observations have concluded. Only the conventional paper poppy is to be worn on ceremonial dress and on parades (with the exception of personnel on ceremonial duties at The Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday). The paper poppy may be removed at the discretion of a parade commander where it is possible for it to be inadvertently knocked off by arms drill. On working dress and combat uniform, subject to working environment (such as FOD risks), a plain enamel poppy badge of dimensions not exceeding 2.5cm (1 ) may be worn as described in para The plain enamel badge may be worn with Mess dress at the discretion of the PMC or CMC accordingly. Only one poppy, paper or enamel, is to be worn on the outermost garment. Poppies are not to be affixed to head dress. b. The national flower or emblem on St George s, St Andrew s, St David s and St Patrick s Day, according to nationality; NOT to be worn on parade. Emblems (including the poppy) should be of conventional dimensions and are to be worn immediately above the right breast pocket (or inserted in the button hole) of the No 1 SD jacket and in the corresponding position on warm-weather dresses, jerseys and combat uniform. When worn with the greatcoat it is to be worn on the left lapel. In order to avoid damaging the waterproof materials, emblems are not to be worn with the GPJ or wet weather outerwear.
