2 CAROLYNQUARTERMAINE Carolyn Quartermaine s work spans over three decades at the cutting edge of design. Her visionary and inspirational fabrics, her interior styling, art direction and artworks have been seen across the globe in the most exclusive and prestigious locations, and she has long held a place among the leading contemporary practitioners. An RCA graduate in fine art, principally applying herself to the medium of fabric, and thence to the ambient media of interior spaces, Carolyn now refutes categorization. She is first and foremost an artist. Painter, designer, maker, these terms can never describe all; she allows herself to accept no boundary to the applications of her vision: it is total, holistic and profound. By fusing contemporaneity to antiquity, she continually renews and reinvents classic shapes and spaces with surprising juxtapositions and vibrant contrasts - at the same time remaining true to the integrity and history of the spaces in which she works. (Hotel Delos; Chateau Beloeil; her own personal living spaces) Carolyn s most widely recognised collection, Script, established her international reputation in the early 80s, and perfectly illustrates the sumptuous yet minimalistic principles that underpin her work. An unfailing eye for beauty, a painter s sense of colour, a modernist s approach to form and juxtaposition, a minimalist sense of purity and reduction, an historian s understanding of classical forms- all combine to create a unique understanding of surface, texture and colour within spaces. Always unexpected, Carolyn brought a fluorescent palette to her work in 2008, causing a sensation, and in extending the theme she has brought a new definition to the traditional French fabric toile de Jouy. In this way Carolyn consistently starts with traditional sources and gives them a highly contemporary twist she was also awarded the title Designer of the Year at Maison et Object, Paris. In 2012 Carolyn continues to break new ground with a complete restyle of the Glade bar at Sketch in London. We need to create interior spaces that let us dream a little more, she says.
