21 STANDARDS APPLICABLE TO COMFORTIES GLOES A number of standards apply to the manufacturing, inspection and classification of disposable medical and protective gloves, depending on the purpose for which they are intended for. The BS-EN standard applies to disposable medical gloves. This standard, developed by the standards committee for biocompatibility and biological evaluation of medical devices, governs examination and surgical gloves. Gloves that comply with this standard can be marketed as medical devices Class 1 and provided with a CE label in accordance with EU Directive No. 93/42/EEC concerning medical devices. Comforties nitrile examination gloves satisfy this standard and are marketed as such. The purpose of these examination gloves is to protect both the patient and the wearer from cross-infection. These are non-sterile medical gloves which are intended to be worn during all medical and nursing work, such as medical examinations and all diagnostic, therapeutic and nursing activities and in the handling of infected materials. The BS-EN and BS-EN 420 standards relate to protective gloves and were developed by the standards committee for personal protective equipment. Personal protective equipment falls under EU Directive No. 89/686/EEC EU concerning personal protective equipment. These standards were initially developed and intended for protective gloves used for industrial purposes. We have established that Comforties nitrile examination gloves comply with the BS-EN and BS-EN 420 standards insofar as these apply to disposable examination gloves.
