Wash and Care Recommendations for Nomex IIIA and Nomex Blend Flame Resistant Garments NOMEX fiber is heat resistant and permanently flame resistant. NOMEX IIIA incorporates an anti-static fiber which reduces nuisance static. In static-sensitive environments, proper grounding procedures must be observed. Flame resistant garments should be removed immediately and replaced with clean FR apparel if they become fouled with flammable material. Flame resistant apparel should be washed using soft water (less than 4.0 grains). Hard water adversely affects cleaning, resulting in increased detergent usage. Hard water contains mineral salts that can form insoluble deposits on the surface of fabrics. Sufficient buildup can negate the flame resistant characteristics of the garment, and may serve as fuel if garments are exposed to an ignition source. Nomex garments can be laundered at temperatures up to 140 F with good colorfastness. Processing in hotter formulas may be required to remove soils. It should be noted that even under the best laundering conditions, color retention is generally not as good as industrial polyester/cotton blends. These garments can also be dry cleaned in perchloroethylene or petroleum solvent with no adverse affect on the flame resistant properties. Important considerations are temperature control in washing and drying and removing flammable soils or chemicals that can overwhelm or mask the FR properties. 70 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Wash and Care Recommendations for Nomex IIIA and Nomex Blend Flame Resistant Garments COMMERCIAL LAUNDERING Process separately from other types of garments throughout the entire operation to prevent accumulation of lint and minimize pilling. Sort by shade to reduce staining or color transfer which may occur. Use low temperature (140 F max.), low alkalinity surfactant chemistry for water washing. Higher ph products and elevated wash temperatures accelerate color loss. Washing at hotter temperatures and higher levels of alkalinity may be necessary to remove soils. This will not damage the fabric or degrade the FR properties but may affect color. Removing flammable soils is more important than color retention. Use a multiple add procedure (break and second suds) where soil level requires. Do not use chlorine bleach. This will weaken the fabric and accelerate color loss. Use of oxygen bleach is acceptable where necessary. Temperature step-downs between baths should not exceed 15 F and cool to 100 F or less before extraction to minimize wrinkling. Rinse well and sour properly. As this fabric does not retain much moisture, short extraction at low levels should be sufficient. This should also reduce wrinkling. Condition at F stack temperature so fabric temperature measured in the basket does not exceed 80 F. This fabric will dry rapidly. Do not over dry. Excessive heat will cause color loss. Cool down to 100 F or less and remove promptly from the dryer. Shrinkage similar to 65/35 blends can be expected. The fabric will not stretch so allow for ease of motion in fitting wearers. Tunnel finishing will improve fabric smoothness but may cause hanger impressions. If creases in pants are desired, pressing will be required. Do not exceed 80 F fabric temperature. HOME LAUNDERING Wash and dry separately to prevent accumulation of lint. Pre-treat greasy stains and do not overload the washer to help insure removal of soils. Wash in hot water (up to 140ºF) using any typical home laundry detergent. Do not use tal low soap. Do not use chlorine bleach. Do not use starch. Do not use fabric softeners. Do not over dry. For maximum flame resistance, greases and oils must be thoroughly removed. If home procedures do not accomplish this, commercial laundering or dry cleaning is recommended. DRY CLEANING Either perchloroethylene or petroleum solvent can be used. In cases of heavy, oily soil, this may be the preferred approach. With petroleum, it is necessary to ensure all solvent has been completely dried from the garment. 72 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Wash and Care Recommendations for Amplitude FR Garments Milliken FR Amplitude 88% Cotton, 1% Nylon You may use standard home laundry detergents to wash Amplitude garments, but do not use chlorine bleach, liquid peroxide bleaches or detergents containing hydrogen peroxide, fabric softeners or starch. FR garments are performance based apparel. As such, the following laundering guidelines are offered to ensure the garment performs in the manner it was designed on a consistent basis. HOME LAUNDERING When home washing garments made from Amplitude fabrics, you may use typical home laundry detergents utilizing any wash temperature recommended by the detergent. Do not use other soaps (tallow soaps contain animal fats which are flammable). Garment stains may be treated with a non-bleach type commercial stain removal product. Repeated chlorine bleaching damages cotton and compromises fabric strength. This may compromise the FR chemistry that is permanently chemically bound to the cotton in the garment. Do not use home wash detergents containing hydrogen peroxide. Starch, fabric softener, and other laundry additives can coat the fiber and mask flame resistant performance. They may also serve as fuel in case of combustion. Flame resistant apparel should be washed using soft water (< 4 grains). Hard water can affect cleaning and may contain mineral salts that can cause insoluble deposits on the fabric which may serve as fuel if garments are exposed to an ignition source. COMMERCIAL LAUNDERING FR cotton and cotton blend fabrics have similar shrinkage expected in regular cotton garments. Hotter water temperatures generally cause greater shrinkage, but may be required to remove certain soils. It is important to remove flammable soils as they may compromise FR performance. Amplitude fabrics maintain their FR performance for the useful life of the garment when washed according to care instructions. During commercial laundering, Milliken recommends washing garments according to the NFPA 11 guidelines. For best colorfastness and garment appearance, use wash temperatures at or below 150 F, however; garments may be washed at up to 165 F. Milliken recommends washing FR garments separately from other garments. Use the correct water level for the load and do not overload the machine. When drying, do not over dry the garment. If dried either too long or too hot you may get excessive shrinkage (typical for cotton, in excess of 5%). If desired, iron with a synthetic/cotton iron setting, with or without steam. Do not use starch. DRY CLEANING Amplitude cotton/nylon garments may be professionally dry cleaned. Either petroleum solvent or perchloroethlyene can be used. When using petroleum solvent, it is necessary to ensure that all solvent has been completely dried from the garment. With either solvent type, the garments must be free of redeposition of any kind. The information in this report is based on the results of testing in accordance with NFPA , NFPA 70E-004, ASTM , and additional laboratory and commercial laundry testing. 73 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Wash and Care Recommendations for Polartec FR Garments Polartec fabrics are known for their easy care and lasting durability. Most Polartec fabric can be washed in warm water and tumbled dry on low and in most cases this will deliver the best post-wash feel and performance. However, every single Polartec fabric can be machine washed cold and line dried and a few of our fabrics require it. This approach is the most gentle for the fabric and is also the most energy-efficient. One of the greatest environmental impacts of our clothing is washing and drying over the life of the garment. Using cold water and line drying saves a large amount of energy. And most Polartec fabrics are stain-resistant (requiring less laundering) and dry extremely quickly on their own. A Few General Tips: Polartec FR Unique blend fibers for permanent flame resistance At Polartec, we don't always know what trim or special features clothing companies may have applied to the finished garment. So please refer to the care instructions on the garment in addition to our general suggestions. Front-loading washers are preferred if possible. They are gentler on our fabrics and use less water generally than top-loading agitation-style machines. Turning a fleece garment inside out prior to wash can help preserve its appearance. Detergents and machine-washing in general gradually degrade the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment on fabrics. To get the best performance, run an extra rinse cycle, and tumble dry low if garment care instructions allow. Some fabric treatments like Polartec Power Care DWR require warm water and some time in the dryer to be activated. Follow the specific instructions on the bottle when using a fabric treatment product. General Care for Next-to-Skin Fabrics: Polartec Power Dry and Polartec Power Stretch 100% polyester: Machine wash warm (105F, 40C), tumble dry low. Blends of polyester, nylon, polypropylene, wool, and/or spandex, or where garment care instructions indicate: Cold wash (85F, 30C), line dry. DWR, we recommend Polartec Power Care DWR to renew the water repellency. Next-to-Skin fabrics Polartec Power Dry and Polartec Power Stretch rely upon mechanical wicking to pull moisture away from the skin. Using too much detergent in the wash cycle or fabric softener in the dry cycle can inhibit the wicking action. Be sure to use light detergent (Polartec Power Care Base Layer Wash) that rinses completely clean and avoid fabric softeners for these fabrics. Insulation Fabrics: Polarfleece, Polartec Classic, Polartec Thermal Pro, and Polartec Wind Pro. As a general rule, most fabrics in these series can be machine washed warm (105F, 40C), tumble dry low. Blends of polyester, nylon, polypropylene, and/or spandex, or where garment care instructions indicate: Cold wash (85F, 30C), line dry. However, consider reducing environmental impact with a cold wash and line dry on all these fabrics. (Note: A few minutes in a dryer on low can improve the softness/fluffiness of the fabric.) Use a clean-rinsing detergent (Polartec Power Care Outerwear Cleaner ). Fabric softener can be used to reduce static cling, but this will also reduce the effectiveness of the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) treatment.
