5 SURFACE PREP Proper surface preparation is critical during and after the painting process as surfaces need to be properly prepared for lasting paint adhesion to take place. Two of the most common concerns for improper topcoat adhesion typically occur in blend areas and on plastic surfaces such as bumper covers. 6 SURFACE CORRECTION REFINISHING PROCESS Understanding surface imperfections and the stages of defect removal is needed before choosing a buffing product and pad. The graphics below illustrate the vehicle surface and the steps required to remove defects and complete the refinishing process. SURFACE DEFECTS Defects can range from dirt nibs to orange peel. Sanding and then buffing are often the steps required to recreate the smooth surface needed for light to reflect in the right way to produce gloss equal to the original surface condition. Dirt nibs Orange peel REMOVING THE DEFECTS Sanding the surface removes the defect but leaves scratches that will keep gloss from appearing. After sanding, compounding is the first step of the buffing process that begins to remove the sand scratches. Compounding is followed by polishing, which removes all remaining scratches and compounding swirls to leave a smooth surface and a brilliant gloss. Glaze is often added at this point to protect the refinished surface. SAND 1500 STEP 1 COMPOUND STEP 2 AND 3 POLISH STEP 4 GLAZE NO FILLERS Presta s buffing compounds and polishes do not contain fillers, waxes or silicones. These substances can be used to temporarily fill scratches but do not remove them. This method of reproducing gloss will eventually wash away and the scratches reappear, reducing or eliminating any gloss that was created. 24 ReNuLite Headlight Lens restoration Factory headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate to be impact and scratch resistant. A special coating is applied during production to provide UV protection. Over time this coating decays, causing the unprotected lenses to become yellow and cloudy from overexposure to UV rays.
