NUCLEUS Free radical damages Antioxidants scavenging free radicals CELL A free radical is a molecule or atom with one or more unpaired electrons, rendering it unstable and hence extremely reactive. It rapidly attempts to steal an electron from another compound in order to become stable. The molecule that loses an electron in turn becomes a reactive free radical. Free radicals have paradoxical effects on the body. Indeed, they are both beneficial and harmful for our body, depending on their concentration. The body s main source of free radicals stems from the activity of mitochondria where they are produced from electrons provided by the Krebs cycle during the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a source of cell energy. These free radicals play a major role in the production of cell mediators of homeostasis. Recent scientific discoveries have change our view of free radicals. They can no longer simply be considered as highly reactive toxic substances. Our knowledge of their role has progressed significantly and these compounds are emerging as genuine messengers, capable of triggering beneficial biological responses. In order to activate cell communication, our research laboratories propose a cytokine-like compound capable of producing limited quantities of free radicals, thus affecting fibroblast stimulation. In this manner, we are applying the principle of medical vaccination to medical-cosmetics. Indeed, vaccination is well-known to the medical field. 4 IMUDILIN, THE ANTI-AGING VACCINE The mode of action of IMUDILIN is highly original as it can produce very small amounts of reactive species and act both as an antioxidant (at high concentration) and pro-oxidant (at low concentration). Chemical structure of L-Gluhist, the peptido-mimetic of IMUDILIN This property enables IMUDILIN to stimulate the activity of the skin s immune cells by acting as a physiological messenger. IMUDILIN thus imitates the effects of cytokines. This peptidomimetic (analogue of a natural peptide) is a derivative of glutamic acid. H2N HOOC This duality guarantees the compound s harmlessness. When applied sparsely to the skin, it generates small amounts of reactive species that stimulate the cells. If the amount applied is increased, the product s antioxidant effect predominates. 5 AN ALTERNATIVE TO BOTULINUM TOXIN: SNAP-8 Paralyzing action Injecting botulinum toxin into muscle causes temporary paralysis whose extent is dependent upon the dose administered. Botulinum toxin blocks the release of a neurotransmitter involved in the passage of the nerve impulse traveling from the nerves to the muscle fibres and causing their contraction. SNAP-8: The effect of injections without the risks SNAP-8 is produced by biotechnology. It is a combination of eight amino acids intended to mimic the role of botulinum toxin at the neurotransmitter biochemical reaction level. The structure of SNAP-8 is similar to that of the SNAP- 25 molecule, found naturally in nerve cells. Its action consists in mimicking that of SNAP-25, competing with this latter and binding to the same cell locations, thus blocking the physiological chain of the muscle contraction message. SNAP-25 cannot bind to SNARE as SNAP-8 binds to it instead. The synaptic vesicle is unable to efficiently release its neurotransmitters and hence muscle contraction is attenuated, preventing line and wrinkle formation. By limiting muscle contraction, SNAP-8 thus reduces the depth of facial wrinkles caused by the contraction of facial expression muscles. By targeting the same wrinkle formation mechanism in a totally safe manner, SNAP-8 represents a safer, less expensive and gentler alternative to botulinum toxin. Hyaluronic acid is a member of the glycosaminoglycan family and has been identified in the tissues of all vertebrates. Skin contains more than 50% of all the body s hyaluronic acid (20 g).
