9 Preface The exciting world of hairdressing is one we both love and thrive in. We have never wanted to be anything other than good hairdressers, and have worked long and hard to achieve success in our respective areas of expertise. But what we have learned means nothing if we do not pass on some of the experience we have gained in forty years in hairdressing. We have, of course, shared our knowledge with colleagues at hairdressing shows, seminars and teach-ins, but we have always been a little sad on these occasions that we were not also reaching the people that matter most, the clients who make our jobs so enjoyable and worth while. We are glad to say this book now remedies that situation. 10 Introduction Many people are actually afraid of their own hair. This may seem hard to believe and rather an exaggeration but a lot of women don't know exactly how far they can go with their hair and so give up on it altogether. True, hair does have limitations and you cannot always get what you want from it, but there are alternative approaches. We tell you in this book what some of those are, and hope by our explanations to increase your confidence. The big thing about hair is that it has progressed from being merely a covering for our scalps to being a positive beauty asset that enhances our natural features ifwe let it. Hair is the only part of the body with such versatility - you can completely change your looks with the hairstyle you choose. But hair has to be looked after, treasured as a cashmere sweater might be, so that it can be moulded to your requirements. Unfortunately, too many clients and even some hairdressers abuse hair horribly, often quite unintentionally. The purpose of this book is to explain the structure of hair, how to care for it, what perming does to hair and why certain products are better for the hair than others. We want to make the public far more conscious of caring for hair at home, but only to supplement the services received at the salon, not to replace them. In hairdressing today there are xi

11 Introduction many advanced techniques that should not be in the hands of non-professionals and we don't feel it would do you any service to tell you all about them. Instead, we have produced this book as a guide to how you can best use your hairdresser and the professional services available and keep up the necessary maintenance at home. We want to ensure that yourhair is in better shape and condition after you have read this book than when you started it, an improvement achieved, we hope in friendly consultation with your stylist, and with you better informed about what's going on.
