1 Term 1 - Week 8 18th March 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Friends Today we celebrate the feast day of our school s patron saint, St Joseph. St Joseph is also remembered in May when we celebrate the feast day of St Joseph the Worker. As a school community we will celebrate our patron saint in May. St Joseph is a wonderful example to us all and I regularly witness his kind, caring and humble qualities in the children of our school. We are blessed to have a wonderful school community that, as our motto suggests, actively promotes and fosters a community of care in Joseph s likeness. Yesterday we celebrated a wonderful day with our senior citizens, grandparents and family members. Stage 2 were our liturgy leaders and reminded us of the wisdom and love our seniors share with us. Our annual book fair was also a wonderful success with $1400 raised as commission for the purchase of books for our library and additional school resources. Thank you to all the families who generously provided food and a delightful morning tea for our very special visitors. Have a wonderful week at St Joseph s! 5 HEAD LICE Please Check Your Child s Hair THE FACTS; Head lice infestations are a common occurrence, particularly in primary schools. about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is TREATMENT daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice and eggs (nits) TIPS FOR PARENTS IN REDUCING THE SPREAD OF HEAD LICE As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence. regularly check your children's hair teach older children to check their own hair tie back and braid long hair keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family members to use it when they wash their hair. WHAT S THE COMB AND CONSITIONER METHOD Head lice breathe through small openings along their abdomens called spiracles. By coating the hair with something thick and slimy causes these openings to close over and shuts down the louse s breathing. A simple hair conditioner is recommended for this purpose. NITBUSTING AT HOME 1. Try sitting the child between your legs on a low stool and play a video for kid s entertainment for an hour while you work. 2. Wrap a towel or kitchen paper around the child's shoulders to catch conditioner spill. 3. Remove any scrunchies, ribbons clasps, etc. from the child's head and comb out plaits and braids. 4. Apply liberal amounts of conditioner to the scalp and massage it through all the hair shafts. Every hair has to be coated to ensure it reaches the lice. 5. Lice live close to the scalp, so make sure that you cover the hair shaft close to the scalp. You don't have to work the conditioner onto the whole length of the hair. Combing will spread it well enough. The idea of the application is to restrict the movement of the head lice long enough for you to catch them with a comb. 6. After you've applied the conditioner, use a large comb to part small sections of the hair starting from the nape and working upwards toward the crown. Eggs are often found behind the ears and toward the back of the head. By using this method, you are more likely to find the head lice on top of and toward the front of the head. 7. When the hair is detangled and manageable, use a fine lice comb to comb out each section several times. 8. After each comb out, wipe the conditioner on the paper towel. If the child has head lice, you will see them on the towel. 9. Keep combing each section of hair until no further lice, nymphs or eggs appear on the paper towel. Page 5 of 9
