6 What is hair? The mature hair follicle is a small but complex and dynamic organ, and it provides important functions that promote social interactions. The hair follicle is composed primarily of epidermal and dermal tissues. The dermal components of the follicle, namely the dermal papilla and dermal sheath, are derived from the same mesenchyme. The hair follicles are self-renewing and contain reservoirs of multipotent stem cells, which can regenerate epidermis and are thought to play an impotent role during wound healing. The hair follicle is known that each hair follicle repeats a cyclic process consisting of three phases: a growing phase (anagen), a regressing phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen).
