1 This unit has 7 learning outcomes 1. Be able to use effective and safe methods of working when plaiting and twisting 1.1. Protect the client s clothing throughout the service 1.2. Position the client and themselves to meet the needs of the service without causing discomfort,minimising fatigue and the risk of injury 1.3. Use safe working methods that; - make effective use of resources - minimise harm or injury to themselves and others 1.4. Maintain personal standards of health and hygiene 1.5. Complete the plaiting and twisting service within a commercially viable time 1

2 2. Be able to plait and twist hair 2.1. Prepare the client s hair following instructions from the stylist 2.2. Control tools to minimise the risk of damage to the hair and scalp, client discomfort and to achieve the desired look 2.3. Part the sections cleanly and evenly to achieve the direction of the plait(s) and twists 2.4. Secure any hair not being plaited or twisted to keep section clearly visible 2.5. Maintain a suitable and even tension throughout the plaiting and twisting process checking with the client that the tension is comfortable 2.6. Control and secure the client s hair, as necessary 2.7. Adjust the tension of the plaits as necessary 2.8. Apply suitable products, as required, to meet manufacturers and stylist s instructions 2.9. Finish plait(s) and twists so the direction and balance meets the stylist s instructions and to the client s satisfaction 2

6 ASSESSMENT INFORMATION Specific Requirements for Assessment and delivery of this unit. ASSESSMENT AND DELIVERY INFORMATION Centre devised assessment tasks should be approved by the internal verifier for the course before delivery takes place in order to ensure the assessment is fit for purpose and meets the standards required. Unit Summary On completion of this unit, learners will be able to plait and twist African type hair using basic techniques. Assessment Requirements/Recommendations Evidence of practical ability must be demonstrated. The assessment of this unit needs to meet the requirements within the Habia Hairdressing and Barbering Assessment Strategies for African Type hair 2007: 1. Simulation is not allowed for any performance evidence within this unit. 2. The learner must practically demonstrate in their everyday work that they have met the standard for plaiting and twisting hair using basic techniques 3. The assessor will observe the learners performance on at least 3 occasions which must include observation of: -a minimum of 5 cornrows -a single French plait -a series of small two strand twists covering a minimum of 25% of the head 4. The learner must show that they have: -used all the types of products listed: a) sprays b) oils c) moisturisers d) gels -created all the types of plaits and twists listed: a) multiple cornrows 6

7 b) French plait c) two strand twists 5. This unit requires mandatory written questions in accordance with the Habia Assessment Strategies for Hairdressing and Barbering for African Type hair Delivery Requirements/Recommendations Assessment tasks will be devised to meet the needs of the learning group and to cover all the criteria. 7
