QUEENSLAND will ban all new commercial sunbeds from January 1, beginning a phasing-out of solariums in the state - the melanoma capital of the world. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg announced new regulations in December 2012, to prevent new licences being issued for commercial sunbeds. He also said the changes meant tanning businesses would not be able to replace their existing sunbeds once they stopped working. "We're not in the business of licensing businesses to give people skin cancer," Mr Springborg said. "But these are businesses that were established legitimately, and they have employees. We need to give them time to adjust out of the industry." The minister's announcement follows plans by NSW, South Australia and Victoria to ban all commercial sunbeds from In Queensland, tanning salons will be able to continue operating their existing solariums until they break down and cannot be repaired. But Mr Springborg would not rule out more stringent regulations down the track. Figures provided by the Newman Government show Queensland businesses have been moving out of the solarium industry, with 80 operators collectively holding licences for about 120 sunbeds. That compares with 2007 Queensland Health data estimating the state had about 200 businesses operating sunbeds, with licences for 350 solariums. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Jeff Dunn commended the Government for moving quickly on banning the possession, supply and use of new commercial solariums. But anti-solarium campaigner Jay Allen, who believes using a sunbed contributed to his own melanoma diagnosis, said Queensland's ban on new licences did not go far enough.
