2 INTRODUCTION ECOLOGY, A NEW WAY OF LIFE! People are increasingly concerned with wellbeing and are in touch with nature. This also affects their perception of medicine and cosmetics. In Asia, a lot of traditional medicines using plants exist for centuries. The more commonly known is the traditional Chinese medicine. But, in Korea and Japan, Kampo medicine is also widely used. In Europe, we are generally more focusing on drugs coming from modern research. The side effect of this occidental medicine is sometimes the toxicity of the compounds used. People are increasingly looking for natural and safe treatment for their troubles. GemmoTherapy is one of those new answers. In Latin, Gemmae means bud, so GemmoTherapy means therapy with buds. Tree buds were already used in the middle ages by some alchemists, and ancient pharmacopoeias also described the use of buds of fir tree or poplar tree. But this tradition has been lost over the centuries and we had to wait for Dr. Pol Henry, around 1970, who established the basements of GemmoTherapy. Nowadays, it is a therapeutic method, inspired by phytotherapy and homeopathy, which uses bud or new born plant extracts for treating various troubles by oral intake.

3 Why are buds or new born plants so attractive? Because they constitute the embryonic part of the plant! Cellular turnover is intense, and buds contain much more nucleic acid than any other part of the plant. They concentrate the potential biological energies and all the power of the future plant. Thus they can be compared to stem cells. As this relates to the animal kingdom, we named this kind of vegetal cell, Blastocyte. It is pluripotent and so has the ability to become any kind of cell. It is responsible for the initial development of all tissues of the plant. It is in charge of longevity, permanent regeneration, protection and health balance. As long as Blastocyte lives, the vegetal never dies. Furthermore, scientific studies have demonstrated that buds can concentrate more active ingredients than adult plants (e.g. 4 to 8 times more for blackcurrant bud) or even can combine the specific activities of two parts of an adult plant (e.g. buds of linden tree combines the activity of the flowers but also the activity of the wood). Pharmacological or cosmetic activities can be expected to be much higher in bud extracts than in common plant extracts. For this reason, we focus on GemmoTherapy in general, and on bud extracts in particular for developing our cosmetic range of bud extracts. Our GemmoBlast TM range is made from fresh buds, with full traceability from harvest until production.
