It is well established that waxes have the property to enhance gloss, absorb oils, structure and bind, improve emolliency and hydration, be a moisture barrier, control the rheology behavior, enhance thermal stability, be emulsible and dispersible while also being safe and stable ingredients. 5 ACTIWAX SUN Choose your innovative Since very old times, when Roman women used to devote much of their time to their beauty as well as to their skin and body care, sunflower has always been a precious source of vegetal nourishing components: history tells that the ancients used to hydrate their skin through creams and balms derived from oil wax and bees wax. ACTIWAX SUN is the wax fraction of sunflower seeds oil, naturally resulting from pressing the seeds. Wax is obtained by filtration of the oil at low temperature (winterization), optimizing the integrity of its components and ensuring solvent free ingredient. INCI Name: CERA ALBA, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED CERA BIFUNCTIONAL ABWAX COMPOSITION Actiwax Sun is composed of hydrocarbons, sterol esters, triterpenic alcohols and linear esters. These linear esters, ranging from C44 to C66, are mainly composed of two very particular alcohols, Geranylgeraniol and Phytol, esterified with Oleic (C18:1), Arachidic (C20:0), Behenic (C22:0) and Lignoceric (C24:0) acids. Due to a special production process technology, Actiwax has an elevated 50% unsaponifiable content, with 10% of Squalene and 6% of Tocopherol fractions (90% is α-tocopherol). 7

6 ABWAX ACTIWAX SUN CHARACTERISTICS Discover our innovative Actiwax Sun, a highly purified fraction of Sunflower oil to be used in cosmetic formulations, rich in tocopherols and coated in squalene, a component naturally contained even in the human skin. According to our No Impact in Progress philosophy, this is a by-product coming from the food supply chain, properly processed and marketed, and not affected by the Reach regulation. Actiwax Sun protects the skin from dehydration, finding its main application in rich creams, lipsticks and body balms. Being a high performance product, only small quantities are required to prepare outstanding cosmetics. ACTIWAX SUN CONCEPT PLUS and EFFICACY TESTS Actiwax has a high melting point and a strong gelling agent behavior. In cosmetic formulations, it improves oils absorption, formulation cohesion and consistency, gloss, emolliency and film-forming. Due to an exclusive production technology, Actiwax is naturally rich in vegetable Squalene and α-tocopherol (E vitamin). This property, radically different from traditional Sunflower waxes, allows Actiwax to increase skin defenses, being active as antioxidant and anti-aging, reducing cellular degeneration and cutaneous dehydration, and improving skin elasticity. Brasca performed efficacy tests on Actiwax, such as the in vitro cell culture mtt test after oxidant stress with H 2 O 2. Actiwax counteracts the damaging effects of oxidative stress by protecting the cells from oxidative damage and increasing cell viability. PROTECTION from oxidative damage The reduction of transcutaneous water loss has been demonstrated by placebo controlled comparison tests. Actiwax definitely improves skin moisturization. Oxidative stress was induced in a keratinocytes cell culture by adding to the cell culture medium a pro-oxidant agent (2.0 mm H 2 O 2 ) after then cells were incubated with increasing concentration of Actiwax Sun. A placebo-controlled clinical study was carried out on 20 subjects with dry skin. The cream containing Actiwax Sun and a base cream were applied for 7 DAYS on the face (half face application). Skin moisturization was evaluated by means of Corneometer. 9

They are obtained from petroleum distillation residual heavy fractions, by solvent separation, refining and hydrogenation. INCI Name: MICROCRISTALLINA CERA Cutting-edge TECHNOLOGY CONCEPT PLUS The microcrystalline waxes range offers formulators a wide choice in wax behavior. Microcrystalline waxes ingredients can be found from soft to hard, from flexible to rigid, with or without adhesiveness, glossy or not, with weak or strong oil absorption and with melting points from 60 to 100 C. They have a small crystals structure and are odorless and tasteless. In cosmetic formulations, being effective at low dosage, microcrystalline waxes modify oil retention, viscosity, cohesion, opacity, lubrication, spreading, gloss, thermal stability, emolliency and filmforming. 11

Beeswax is naturally secreted by working bees, and then refined by mild processes using water and filtrations only, removing impurities and pigments, reducing odor, but keeping all the benefits of a naturally occurring, sustainable and renewable material. The wax is extracted from the leaves of the tree and then refined using water and filtration processes, being a perfect example of sustainable use of Natural resources. The Organic Certification ensures that the certified product is free of any chemical contamination, and that the production process respects and maintains the integrity and quality of the natural environment. CANDELILLA WAXES INCI Name: CANDELILLA CERA The Candelilla plant grows wild in semi-arid zones in Mexican Chihuahuan Desert, and it is harvested using careful manual process, ensuring the sustainability of the resource. The wax is separated from the plant with boiling water and refined by filtration and bleaching. ORGANIC sources ORGANIC BEESWAX Organic Beeswax is now available for cosmetic use. Crude beeswaxes are harvested in wild countries, free from intensive agriculture and from chemical or pesticide uses, certified by official organizations. These raw materials are carefully refined using only water and vegetal active carbons as refining and bleaching agents, in order to obtain a pure, white, cosmetic and pharmaceutical grade beeswax, organic certified. 17

12 REACH REGULATION Reg. 1907/2006/EC REACH CONFORM LAW CONFORMITY ABWAX have been analyzed for verify their conformity to cosmetic legislation requirements: the product complies with Directive 2003/15/EC regarding the presence of 26 substances identified as allergenic (set threshold value of 10 ppm). Analytical data confirm that these allergens are absent; the product does not contain any substances intentionally added and classified as Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or Reprotoxic, category 1, 2 or 3 according to annex I of the Directive 67/548/EEC and its amendments, as the use of these substances is prohibited by the Directive 76/768/EC; the product has never been tested on animals accordingly to Directive 2003/15/EC (VII amendment of Dir. 76/768/ EC), come into force on 11/03/2009 for cosmetic ingredients; heavy metals are not present or added: if any they are in traces, as defined by Directive 76/768/EEC; the product complies with the Regulation 1907/2006/EC (REACH Regulation). 21
