Badisa is die oorkoepelende organisasie wat ontstaan het deurdat die Sinodale Kommissie vir die Diens van Barmhar gheid van die NG Kerk in Suid-Afrika (Wes- en Suid-Kaap) en die Sinodale Kommissie vir Diakonale Dienste van die VG Kerk in Suider-Afrika (Kaapland) ooreengekom het om hulle maatskaplike diensprogramme te amalgameer in 'n gesamentlike bediening. As program van Badisa is die Ins tuut geregistreer as 'n weldaadsorganisasie (OWO-nommer ) asook as 'n Organisasie Sonder Winsoogmerk (OSW-nommer ). Skenkings aan Kaleidoskoop/Ins tuut is belas ng a rekbaar. 5 Boodskap van die Voorsitter Message from the Chairman Winston Churchill popularised the saying: Never let a good crisis go to waste. Since September 2016 the execu ve commi ee of the board of Kaleidoscope started looking into our financial situa on. Dit was vir ons belangrik om die situasie so te bestuur dat gehalte diens steeds gelewer word aan al ons kliënte, en ter selfde tyd binne die begro ng gebly word. Daar is noukeurig aandag gegee aan die opstel van die begro ng en die bestuur daarvan. Dit is ook baie belangrik dat ons donateurs steeds vertroue in die organisasie het. With all of this the 'crisis did not go to waste'. Ons is dankbaar dat Kaleidoskoop se situasie verander het na `n situasie waarin finansiële- en bestuursuitdagings op krea ewe en kundige wyse aangespreek kan word. Namens die dagbestuur van die Beheerraad wil ek graag die personeel van Kaleidoskoop bedank vir voortdurende kundige dienste gelewer. Dankie ook vir julle gesindheid van saam werk en saam verantwoordelikheid neem. Graag sonder ons vir Irene de Bod, Stephné Botha en Anemie Franken uit, wat met kundigheid en diepe lojaliteit verantwoordelik was vir die bestuur van Kaleidoskoop. Dankie ook vir die wyse waarop julle dit gedoen het. Julle toewyding en bekwaamheid is vir ons `n inspirasie. We would also like to thank Hein Wagner, Paul Greyling and Schalk Hugo that joined the restructuring commi ee. You helped us to develop insight into this complex organisa on. 6 Boodskap van die Uitvoerende Hoof Message from the Executive Head Waar almal jou naam ken Terwyl ek hier by my lessenaar sit word ek herinner aan die tema lied van die gewilde TV vervolgverhaal Cheers, met die volgende woorde : Some mes you want to go Where everybody knows your name And they're always glad you came You want to be where you can see The troubles are all the same You want to be where everybody knows your name Ek is nie seker wat die skrywer van hierdie lied in gedagte gehad het toe hy die woorde neerpen nie, maar wat ek wel weet is dat dit een van die beste beskrywings is van die wonderlike organisasie wat ek die voorreg gehad het om uitvoerende hoof van te wees vir die afgelope 14 jaar. Dit was voorwaar 'n plek waar ek heen wou gaan, waar almal my naam geken het, waar almal altyd vrolik en bly was om my te sien, maar ook 'n plek waar daar nie perfekte mense was nie; ons is almal op een of ander manier gekraak. It reminds me of the beau ful Leonard Cohen song where he sings: Ring the bells that s ll can ring, there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. We are all cracked people pieces of glass but at Kaleidoscope we are joined in a Kaleidoscope of colours to spread love and joy in Worcester, in South Africa and even broader. That is why it is very difficult for me to say goodbye to this excep onal place with its excep onal people. I comfort myself with the words of old Alewyn where he said to me the other day: Sir, even though you are going away, you will remain deep in our hearts. I o en told visitors: You never leave the premises the same as when you arrived; something happens to you the residents creep deep into your heart. They make you see the world with different eyes. 8 Versorging, Mediese en Terapeutiese Dienste: Tehuise en Huis Brevis Care, Medical and Therapeutic Services: Homes and Brevis Home s another year has passed, I have come to Aunderstand that it is the common everyday blessings for which we should be most grateful. As we look back on another year yet again filled with blessings, we can just thank the Lord for all that He has bestowed upon us. In ons tehuise streef ons daarna om vir elke inwoner die geleentheid te bied om binne 'n ondersteunende omgewing te leer en te ontwikkel sodat elkeen sy maksimale vlak van funksionering kan bereik. Ons bied residensiële sorg volgens inwoners se persoonlike ontwikkelingsvlak in ons vier tehuise naamlik, Ebenhaezer (97 inwoners met meervoudige gestremdhede), Huis Jack Pauw (60 dames en 'n paar getroude egpare), Huis de Villiers (61 manne) en Huis Brevis, ons tehuis met 96 bejaardes. Ons bied ook behuising in die vorm van woonstelle vir persone wat ona anklik kan funksioneer. Inwoners in ons woonstelle het steeds toegang tot ons dienste, wat insluit ons mediese dienste, voedseldiensvoorsiening asook maatskaplike dienste. Die inwoners in ons ondersteunde behuising ontvang die geleentheid om ona anklik te leef en in te skakel in die gemeenskap volgens elkeen se behoe e. Ons sorg strek elke jaar verder en tans bied ons residensiële versorging aan 314 inwoners in ons tehuise, 78 persone wat in gesinsverband leef in woonstelle asook verblyf aan 32 siggestremde studente wat jaarliks inskakel vir verdere opleiding. Ons is so trots op ons inwoners maar ook ons personeel wat met soveel liefde en sorg hierdie spesialiteit dienste lewer aan ons inwoners. In the services department we strive to create an environment where each resident can feel at home. I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. One of our main aims will always be to ensure our residents know that they are loved. Our year was once again filled with highlights and excep onal achievements and even though we experienced challenges, together we were able to work through each challenge to achieve much more than we believed possible. It is with great pride that we share a few of the highlights of our year with you: family members, our special friends, benefactors and donors. Die lys van spesiale vriende wat ons ondersteun en die lewens van ons inwoners kom ophelder het is so lank dat ons net verstom kan staan oor elke persoon, kerkgroep en organisasie/besigheid wat ons kom besoek het. Elke besoeker wat hulle tyd en liefde kom gee is vir ons kosbaar. Ons is bederf met lekkernye, geskenke en gebruiksgoedere! Soveel persone het ook hulle dienste, en goedere gra s aan ons gelewer, soos Global Smiles in Stellenbosch, Garth Faro, Beit Bracha gemeenskapsentrum, Ukwanda kampus se fisioterapie studente en nog vele meer! Ons is ook dankbaar vir Jan Prinsloo en Frank Noble wat aangestel is as ons ombudspersone by die tehuise. Julle dienste is vir ons kosbaar. We are so thankful for having special friends like Luis and Linda Balona, Mr Shaw, Danie van Eeden, Hildegard du Plessis, Almuth Sander and Gert and Lucrecia Barnard who support us so loyally and through their dona ons create new opportuni es for our residents. Thank you also to Revlon for dona ng toiletries available for residents in need and each and every family member and friend as well as business who once again supported our annual bazaar and other fundraising ini a ves! Ons is ook dankbaar vir die Departement van Maatskaplike Dienste wat soos elke jaar ons hand neem met befondsing van ons residensiële sorg sowel as ons maatskaplike dienste. Ons jaarlikse Monitering & Evaluasie het plaasgevind in Oktober en die oudit, soos uitgevoer deur Dr Bruwer, in Augustus. By die tehuise sien ons hierdie besoek en ondersoek as 'n posi ewe geleentheid sodat ons kan seker maak dat alle aspekte van ons diens op standaard is. Die span wat ons besoek het moes al ons sisteme en dienste soos gelewer aan Huis Jack Pauw, Huis de Villiers, Ebenhaezer sowel as ons dienste, maatskaplike afdeling asook Huis Brevis ondersoek, en posi ewe terugvoer is ontvang met goeie voorstelle hoe om ons dienste verder te verbeter. Dit is vir ons 'n hoogtepunt om weereens die departement se hande te kon sterk Annual Report

9 vir nog 'n jaar se administrasie van Joseph Matwa ouetehuis in Robertson. By Kaleidoskoop is ons primêre fokus om dienste en sorg te bied aan persone met visuele gestremdhede. Persone in ons sorg leef egter nie net met visuele gestremdhede nie, maar ook met verskeie addisionele gestremdhede. Ons bied tans versorging en mediese dienste aan: 54 persone wat psigiatriese medikasie benodig; 26 persone met diabetes; 30 persone met epilepsie; 19 persone met fisiese gestremdhede wat o o k r o l s t o e l g e b o n d e i s ; 2 2 p e r s o n e m e t gehoorapparate asook 256 persone wat kroniese medikasie benodig. Met visuele gestremdhede is daar menige kondisies waar persone hulle oë verloor en derhalwe kunsogies benodig - 7 persone in ons sorg het kunsoë. Dalai Lama said, if you want others to be happy, prac ce compassion and if you want to be happy, prac ce compassion. Therefore we believe in not only receiving dona ons, but where we have enough to also lend a hand to other organisa ons in need. Some of the biggest highlights on our calendar were when we were able to donate our me and extra resources to others in need. We were once again able to offer our medical services to ASD (the Associa on for the Sensory Disabled). The manager of residen al services again acted as chairperson for the Breede Valley MSAT (mul -sectoral ac on team) and through MSAT community ini a ves were driven including the highlight of 67 minutes for Mandela on 18 July at Siyahluma day care centre. The Manager: Care, medical and therapeu c services is proud to serve as deputy chairperson on the Worcester Hospital Facility board and the financial commi ee. Spesiale geleenthede: Kersfees en ander vakansiedae kan soms baie eensaam raak vir inwoners wat nie familie het nie, maar in samewerking met Feedem probeer ons om hierdie dae feestelik te maak. Feedem het vir ons 'n feestelike kersete voorgesit in elke tehuis. Merweville se NG Gemeente het verder gehelp om Kersfees onvergeetlik te maak met meer kerspakkies as wat ons kon tel! Met Valentynsdag het Feedem 'n heuglike geleentheid geskep wat afgesluit is met 'n lekker sokkie. During the last financial year the local fire brigade offered their exper se and me and they donated and installed smoke detectors in Jack Pauw and De Villiers homes. It was an honour to share our exper se regarding visual impairments to their staff. It is of utmost importance to us to create an environment that is safe and secure! We were fortunate to have access to a special subsidy through which we were able to do an electrical overhaul in Ebenhaezer as part of the requirements for a fire cer ficate. We were also able to upgrade the mimic / panic system in De Villiers and Jack Pauw homes to include an emergency phone that alerts staff when residents are in need of assistance. Opleiding: Die Bestuurder: Versorging, Mediese en Te ra p e u e s e d i e n ste e n A s st B e st u u rd e r : Maatskaplike Dienste was in die bevoorregte posisie om twee kursusse by te woon, die SoKoMo (sosiale kompetensie model), wat ook later in die jaar aan ons personeel in Ebenhaezer gebied is, asook 'n kursus in die hantering en veral familie ondersteuning in die geval van substans- en alkoholmisbruik. 'n Kursus, gereël deur Badisa, is ook bygewoon aangaande regsmediese aspekte in die sorg waar geriatriese kondisies bestaan. Each year we aim to improve our service delivery and where possible, create opportuni es to persons in our care. This year we were able to ini ate our own laundry department, not only can we offer this valuable service in house, but this project has created job opportuni es to persons with visual impairments! The laundry department is only one of many projects and ini a ves we launched to create an environment and structure through which we can become more financially sustainable. We have also implemented care fees for residents with high care needs and we would like to thank the family members who support this ini a ve. Finansiële volhoubaarheid bly 'n hooffokus daarom is dit met groot vreugde wat ons die goeie nuus deel dat die lening vir Ebenhaezer tehuis se verdiskontering in hierdie jaar deurgekom het. Dankie vir elke lid van die munisipaliteit en personeel van Kaleidoskoop wat hierdie proses so hard gedryf het! As we look back on another year full of highlights and so many special friends working along with us to improve the lives of the residents in all our residencies and supported living programme, we can only thank God for all that He has blessed us with. 10 ARBEIDSTERAPIE / OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY As an occupa onal therapist my goal will always be to provide residents with skills for the job of living - those necessary to func on within our Kaleidoscope community. At Kaleidoscope we will always strive to create an environment through which we promote diversity and equality. Therefore we are thankful for the con nua on of services, ac vi es and outreach ini a ves such as: horse riding, animal assisted therapy, exercise groups in the gymnasium and the opportunity to par cipate in ac vi es in the mul - sensory s mula on area. persoon wat kon deelneem aan ons jaarlikse kersspel! 12 Maatskaplike Dienste Social Services The Social Welfare Department is responsible for delivering a full spectrum of services. My responsibility is delivering social welfare services that contribute posi vely towards the care, development, training, rehabilita on and mental health of residents. The social welfare department is responsible for designing and implemen ng individual development plans to offer residents the opportunity to func on at their maximum personal level of development. Add to this our Nighty Night and our Spinal Support, and you have an arsenal that caters to everyone's specific needs. 16 Interne Opleiding Internal Training Die kern en missie van die afdeling Interne Opleiding is om aan al die siggestremdes, doo linde en meervoudiggestremde inwoners, asook die personeel, geleenthede vir opleiding in 'n verskeidenheid van dissiplines te bied. Met hierdie opleiding bemag g ons die siggestremdes se vaardighede en kennis om hul te ondersteun met hul werk binne Kaleidoskoop of vir geleenthede daar buite. Vir liggaamlike en geestelike gesondheid en welsyn koördineer Interne Opleiding saam met talle medewerkers ook sport en buitemuurse ak witeite wat noodsaaklik is vir ons inwoners en personeel. Hier volg 'n kort sameva ng van die opleiding wat aangebied is en ook aan hoeveel studente gedurende die afgelope boekjaar: Rekenaaropleiding aan siggestremde, doo linde, meervoudiggestremde inwoners en siende personeel = 62, Rekenaaropleiding aan gevorderde doo linde inwoners = 3, Vingerspel = 7, Gebare taal = 24, English Communica on = 10, Braille = 15, ABET (Adult Basic Educa on and Training) studente = 11, Kuns = 29, Kitaar = 6, Handtekening = 15, Selfoon- en tablet opleiding = 35 en Massering = 1 student. Ander opleiding en dienste wat aangebied word is lewensvaardigheid, oriëntasie en mobiliteit, lae visie konsultasie, Snoezelen mul -sensoriese s mulasie area, drama opleiding vir die jaarlikse Kersspel en prak ese skakelbord opleiding. In collabora on with the Department of Higher Educa on, ABET training is offered to our residents to further their training and obtain their Senior Cer ficate. Upon comple on of their Senior Cer ficate they will have the opportunity to further their studies at our Kaleidoscope Training to empower them for employment opportuni es in the open labour market. Technology training is of utmost importance to our residents and that is why computer, cellphone and tablet training enjoys preference. visually impaired community on the forefront of the latest technology. Apart from above-men oned training, sport and extramural ac vi es are offered con nuously during the year. A wonderful highlight for our residents is the annual hun ng exhibi on in Pearston and Rietbron where they have the unique opportunity to hunt under the supervision of professional hunters. Laser shoo ng, blind chess, blind golf, blind bowling, blind cricket, blind goalball, swimming lessons, tandem bike riding, horse-riding and the use of our gymnasium and therapeu c exercise sessions are all ac vi es that our residents par cipate in. Jaarliks word die jaar afgesluit met die jaareindfunksie wat 'n hoogtepunt is vir almal wat opleiding ontvang het en ook vir almal wat betrokke was by enige sportak witeite of buitemuurse bedrywighede. Tydens hierdie funksie word daar erkenning gegee aan almal se deelname, inse e en spesiale erkennings. Op 9 Desember 2016 was daar 426 ser fikate en 14 trofees aan 215 trotse ontvangers oorhandig. 18 Oriëntasie en Mobiliteit Orientation and Mobility ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY CLIENTS - 49 Clients received orienta on and mobility training successfully in different areas in Worcester. The visually impaired clients that received mobility training were clients in the Worcester community as well as visually impaired students from our Kaleidoscope Training. LOW VISION - 36 Low vision consulta ons were done and a er consulta on all of these clients were able to read small print with ease by using their prescribed low vision devices. The majority of low vision clients were referred by Dr Stephan van Dijk, local eye specialist. AWARENESS TALKS - 11 Awareness talks were done at various pre-primary schools in Worcester. The focus is on ground phase scholars, because preven on of blindness is of vital importance. HIGHLIGHTS - The advantages of using the roller ball p on the white cane, is that it cuts the training period in half and more me can be spent on re-enforcement on the problem areas. Training with the white cane with the roller ball p provides our visually impaired persons with: more confidence; more informa on is picked up through the cane by rolling the p on different surfaces; a very safe cane technique; independence. Lewensvaardighede ontwikkel om as blinde in die samelewing te funksioneer bv. voorbereiding van etes, self aan te trek, geldeenhede te iden fiseer, kitsbanke te gebruik, inkopies te doen, rekenaar met spraakprogram te gebruik ens. Rehabilitasie en die moontlikheid om nuwe werksgeleenthede te bemeester. CHALLENGES Funding is needed for further orienta on and mobility in the visually impaired person's own surroundings like his home and town. Funding is needed to improve on our manufacturing of canes income genera ng project. Funding is needed to upgrade the paths on our premises. Funding is needed to train field workers to assist especially in the rural areas and surrounding towns. SUMMARY There are 5 different areas in mobility training: 1 Visually impaired persons from the community and surrounding towns. 2. Con nuous assistance and training to Kaleidoscope's visually impaired and mul - disabled employees. 3. Visually impaired students from Kaleidoscope Training. 4. Assistance to visually impaired students at universi es or colleges in Western Cape that need training in their new classes/hostel/ home based area. 5. Visually impaired persons from all over South Africa will be admi ed to our training house. 20 Kaleidoskoop Opleiding Kaleidoscope Training aleidoscope Training is a dynamic and unique Ktraining facility for visually impaired persons in South Africa that empowers blind and par ally sighted students and trains them for careers in the open labour market. At Kaleidoscope Training we focus on the needs and training of: Grade 12 learners from schools for the visually impaired who need a post-matric year to prepare themselves for ter ary studies. Grade 12 learners who need work-related training to enter the labour market. Visually impaired employees who are in need of retraining in order to advance in their work environment. People who lost their sight later in life and who now need a combina on of rehabilita on and training to enter the labour market as a visually impaired employee. The intense individual a en on needed allows for only students to be accommodated per training period of one year (12 months). For many students, this will be the first, and some mes the only, opportunity to obtain a ter ary qualifica on and move closer to independence and self-sufficiency. Why do we do what we do? We want to equip people with visual loss with accredited, na onally recognised qualifica ons in order to promote employability, resul ng in financial independence! As a considerable percentage of our students lost their vision later in life, Kaleidoscope Training not only focuses on career training, but also on rehabilita on of these visually impaired individuals this is a unique combina on unprecedented in South Africa. During 2017, Kaleidoscope Training offers three SAQA (South African Qualifica on Authority) accredited courses; namely End-User Compu ng, Contact Centre and Business Support, and Marke ng. The main focus is to support each student to reach his/her full poten al and to obtain excellent computer competency, as this is the main medium of communica on in the work environment. Our training environment is completely accessible to visually impaired persons through specifically adapted computers, speech synthesisers, assis ve devices, disabled friendly surroundings and individual a en on. We are extremely proud of our excellent pass rate and the successful placement record of our students a er comple on of their studies. The dedicated Work Placement Officer acts as a recruitment consultant to companies who would like to employ a visually impaired worker. Kaleidoscope Training con nues to support students a er placement and also assists employers by offering sensi sa on sessions and advising on assis ve devices. At Kaleidoscope Training, no student is refused as a result of financial constraints. Kaleidoscope (formerly known as the Ins tute for the Blind) therefore carries an enormous financial burden in assis ng students to obtain useful training and, therea er, employment, as well as in keeping the assis ve devices, so ware and equipment up to date. Students who study at Kaleidoscope Training are offered the following courses: Na onal Cer ficate: Informa on Technology: End- User Compu ng NQF Level 3 (mandatory) Na onal Cer ficate: Contact Centre and Business Process Outsourcing Support NQF Level 3 Na onal Cer ficate: Marke ng NQF Level 4 End-User Compu ng is mandatory, students should choose between Marke ng and Contact Centre as an addi onal course. All students must complete two courses during the course of the study period. Kaleidoscope Technology Centre, an extension of Kaleidoscope Training, was launched as a world first in June 2016 and aims at empowering blind and par ally sighted people with employability skills for the open labour market. The training will focus on using Apple technology both for personal and business use. 23 Menslike Hulpbronbestuur - MHB Human Resource Management - HR Menslike Hulpbronne is op 1 Junie 2006 ges g en neem verantwoordelikheid vir die funksies: Keuring en Werwing, Arbeidsverhoudinge, Personeelvergoeding, Organisasieontwikkeling, Personeeladministrasie en stelsels, Beroepsgesondheid, Veiligheid en Sekuriteit. In die eerste paar jaar van MHB se bestaan is bostaande funksies stelselma g vanaf ander departemente oorgeneem en by MHB gesentraliseer. Kaleidoskoop se salarisstelsel ( payroll ) is egter steeds deur die finansiële-afdeling hanteer. 'n Duplisering van take het gevolglik ontstaan aangesien twee afdelings elk 'n gedeelte van een taak behar g het. 'n Hoogtepunt vir MHB was die oorname van die salarisstelsel vanaf 1 Maart Gesamentlik hiermee is gekontroleer dat personeel deur die korrekte kostesentrums vergoed word, hulle persoonlike besonderhede opdateer is en inlig ng op die klok-, verlof- en salarisstelsel ooreenstem met basiese diensvoorwaardes soos vervat in elke personeellid se kontrak. In die proses is die wyse waarop salarisinlig ng geprosesseer is vereenvoudig, die administra ewe lading is verlig en stelsels is meer vaartbelyn gemaak. Although many a empts were made during the past few years to increase the profitability of the produc on units, the units are s ll struggling to become financially sustainable. Subsidies were received from the Department of Labour, but only guaranteed ll March Most of our products are handmade by our blind and par ally sighted employees. Higher labour produc vity was desperately needed to ensure that more products are produced with the same amount of workforce. To increase levels of performance, it is important that employees understand their role and responsibili es and know how their job supports the bigger picture. Baie moeite is gedoen om te bepaal op wa er wyse geboue betree moet word tydens 'n noodsituasie en formele ontruimings-oefeninge het plaasgevind. Aandag, tyd en kostes is ook spandeer ten einde 'n geskiktheidser fikaat vir Ebenhaezer, Tehuis vir meervoudiggestremde inwoners, te bekom. Vanweë die hoë koste verbonde aan die proses, sal dit eers in die volgende finansiële jaar afgehandel kan word. 25 Instandhouding en Infrastruktuur Maintenance and Infrastructure he maintenance of our grounds will always be a Ttop priority and we strive to maintain our grounds and buildings in as mely a fashion possible. We do this not only because neglec ng it would result in greater costs, but also because we want to ensure that our residents and all our other clients have a safe and s e c u r e l i v i n g a n d w o r k i n g e n v i r o n m e n t. Kaleidoscope's, previously known as the Ins tute for the Blind, buildings are insured for R880 million. As this indicates it is an enormous responsibility and very costly - apart from salaries, maintenance is the largest single cost factor. We monitor and maintain all our assets to the best of our ability. All of Kaleidoscope's buildings, including the buildings occupied by Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired, Langerug School and Pioneer Printers, are maintained by this department. KALEIDOSCOPE TECHNOLOGY CENTRE: Technology makes life easier for most of us, but to persons with disabili es, technology opens the world. We are proud to have been part of this project and that our contribu on could assist with the opening of the new department. BINNEHOF WOONSTELLE: Restourasie werk en opknapping is gedoen in die volgende woonstelle: nr's: 2, 9, 16, 18, 21. Waar daar nog baddens in woonstelle was is dit ook vervang met storte om besparing oor die langtermyn te bewerkstellig. RESIDENTIAL SERVICES: To maintain the 4 residencies could easily be a full me job. We were able to ensure that as rooms in Brevis, our residency for the elderly, became vacant we completed the necessary renova ons before new residents were admi ed. We were also able to remodel the old staff tea room into a bedroom to expand our frail care unit. The apartment for the new Care Manager at Jack Pauw home was renovated to create an invi ng environment for the Care Manager and her family. All the maintenance within our scope, including but not limited to structural, electrical and plumbing was done on a con nuous basis. Ons het egter nie hier gestop nie, maar ook seker gemaak dat die elektriese ondersoeke vir Huis Ebenhaezer en Huis Brevis ook afgehandel is in die jaar om elektriese ser fikate hiervoor ook te ontvang. The organisation is situated in Worcester and provides funding for education, training, accommodation and employment opportunities to persons with visual disabilities. The current economic climate of South Africa, together with the challenges that non-profit organisations are enduring, contribute to these challenges. Kaleidoscope appointed a restructuring committee to focus on the finances and management of Kaleidoscope. The committee consists of representatives from the Kaleidoscope: Board of Control, as well as representatives from Badisa, the Dutch Reformed Church (Western Cape) and the United Reformed Church (Cape). Since this date an attempt to bring a new sustainability strategy to the table has been in progress, focussing specifically on the budget and other managerial aspects. Kaleidoscope is still bound to its vision and mission to serve persons with visual impairments, low vision, deafblindness and additional disabilities. Management is aware that serving the disabled community is accompanied with huge responsibilities and that is why new sustainable solutions are being explored. Kaleidoscope appeals to its donors, funders and partners to join hands with them during this time, to rise above and conquer these challenges. 31 Finansies en Administrasie Finance and Administration At the end of March 2017, Kaleidoscope (Ins tute for the Blind) had to say goodbye to our Finance & Administra on Manager Rusty Liebenberg. Mr Liebenberg joined the Ins tute for the Blind's team in October 1994 and now re red a er 22 years. Le in the department are 6 employees responsible for the fixa on and control of the accoun ng system within the organisa on. Following a system which is correspondent to accoun ng policy, makes it possible to ensure complete and accurate financial reports for the many divisions of Kaleidoscope. Along with the support from the two audit companies involved, Theron Du Plessis and Henré Grove Inc, and Badisa, the annual financial audit reports for the past few years have proved the sustainability of the finance department. In the department of finance and administra on we are well aware of the importance and impact of each and every dona on received from our donors and we salute you for your ongoing care and support. 43 Pionierdrukkery Pioneer Printers A short view into our history - The School for the Blind purchased the first braille press in In 1904 the first braille newsle er/magazine, De Pionier, was printed. In 1940 the first Afrikaans braille Bible was printed. The first braille music was printed in In 1959 the first audio book was recorded. In 1964 large print was ini ated. In 1980 the braille, audio and large print literature produc on units moved into the Victor Vaughn building. In 1995 this literature produc on unit of the school became known as Pioneer Printers. What we look like today Pioneer Printers consists of several specialised components such as the technical and African language braille, braille music, tac le graphics, large print, audio cd, computer technical support, finance and administra on each with a component head. Pioneer Printers is the main producer of braille mathema cs, science, computer science, music and tac le graphics in South Africa. Governance and support structure Pioneer Printers is a registered non-profit and public benefit organisa on governed by a management board. The infrastructure and premises are rented free of charge from Kaleidoscope and they also support us with fundraising proposals. Western Cape Educa on Department remunerates 20 of the 54 posts. Finances 2016 was a difficult year due to inconsistent orders from Department of Basic Educa on which lead to a decrease in sales of ±R3.5m. Pionierskool kan danksy die finansiële hulp en belangstelling van ons getroue vriende, donateurs en Kaleidoskoop, gehalte onderrig bied aan siggestremde leerders. Besondere prestasies van leerders getuig van die uitstaande gehalte werk wat gelewer is deur toegewyde personeel, leerders en ouers en is getrou aan ons missie om te streef na die holis ese ontwikkeling van die kind. Ons is dankbaar dat die fasiliteite en ander bronne tot ons beskikking meehelp om 'n gestruktureerde en s mulerende omgewing te skep waar die leerders emosioneel veilig en geborge kan voel om op maal te kan ontwikkel. The school provides educa on and services to children who are visually impaired and consists of the Founda on Phase (Gr R - 3); Intermediate Phase (Gr 4-7) and Senior Phase (Gr 8-12), as well as a Sec on for learners with Special Educa onal Needs who have a visual impairment (blind/dea lind or par ally sighted), with cogni ve challenges, physical challenges and/or medical challenges. Learners who are Dea lind have a combined hearing and vision loss, have very unique learning needs, means of communica on, limited expressive and recep ve language, the need for special content in the area of curriculum, specific learning styles and the need for an individualised curriculum. Every learner's needs are addressed in an individualised curriculum and the focus is on ABILITY and not disability. In addi on to the academic curriculum, we also offer certain auxiliary services, i.e. psychological, orienta on and mobility, speech therapy, school nursing services and occupa onal therapy. To accomplish our goal to develop each learner, we encourage all our learners to take part in the extramural ac vi es we offer.
