1 Cosmetology Beauty is in your hands! Are you interested in skin and nail care and want to own your own nail salon? Have you always wanted to be a hair stylist, cosmetologist or esthetician. All of these career opportunities are possible in the Cosmetology program in the Syracuse City School District. Introduction to Cosmetology provides students with an overview of the necessary skills and prerequisite course work needed to earn a degree with possible licensure in Cosmetology. Students will learn about the vast career opportunities, safety, life skills, manicures, pedicures, nail art, hairstyling, braiding and much more. The Cosmetology program will provide you with the hands on experience you need to be successful in the work place right out of high school. By working in the onsite salon you will not only be training for your career but preparing for the New York State practical exam. All students in 9th grade will receive Career and Financial Management and Exploratory classes. Student will have earned the 12th grade integrated ELA credit upon successful completion of the Cosmetology 100, 200 and 300. Student will receive the Endorsement upon successful completion of the Cosmetology program and must pass the prescribed technical assessment and completion of a commencement level project. Course Syllabus Introduction to Cosmetology COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a one credit, one period class that will introduce students to basic cosmetology skills. Students will get a general overview of a variety of skills and prerequisites which are the foundation of Cosmetology I and II. Topics include cosmetology occupations, safety, professional image and life skills as well as hairstyling, nail and skin care. Various hands-on activities, as well as textbook generated worksheets, lectures and group discussions will help to reinforce the program. Students will also gain hours which are used toward the NYS licensing. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Students will be able to develop finger dexterity and fine motor skills through hands-on activities. 2. Students will also develop skills needed such as time management, communication and professionalism. 3. Students will gain a greater sense of understanding as to what the field of cosmetology is and what physical qualifications are needed to be a successful cosmetologist. INTEGRATED ACADEMICS N/A EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES School will provide: Cosmetology textbook; Intro to Cosmetology Kit that students will use for the entire course. The kit is to be returned complete or the student will be held responsible for the missing items. A list of supplies will be included in kit. Approximate cost to replace kit is $ Students will provide: A closed toed rubber soled shoe worn for safety while working in lab/salon TEXTBOOK Milady. Milady Standard Cosmetology.
