1 USC School of Cinematic Arts Artistry of Makeup Design for Cinema CTPR- 422 Units: 2 Aug 22 Dec 2 (Fridays: 10:00am- 11:50am) Location: School of Cinematic Arts Makeup Room Instructor: Tony Gardner Contact Info: tonygard@usc.edu No Office Hours: by appointment only Office at Alterian, Inc.: Course Description: The emphasis of the fall session will be on the fundamental elements of special make-up effects, with the objective being for the student to learn the techniques of professional make-up artistry and gain familiarity with traditional make-up techniques and materials as well as a basic knowledge of cutting edge makeup effects materials and tools. Students will learn a variety of special make-up effects skills through demonstrations, workshops, and hands-on experience. The course will take students through all the phases of project conceptualization and prosthetic application, from the lifecasting of an actor through the design, sculpting, molding, and casting of simple prosthetics. The class will also include the application, painting, and finishing of prosthetic pieces. The focus is a hands-on approach to learning, with students practicing lessons on each other being on both sides of the makeup process is as insightful as it is important. The class will workshop a wide range of out-of-kit effects makeup effects created from scratch from materials available, as well as pre-made prosthetic pieces. Out-of-kit effects lessons include age makeup, blood rigs and their many uses, simulated injuries like cuts and, scrapes, and three-dimensional effects, such as wounds, bullet hits, or broken noses. Some of the pre-made prosthetic pieces demonstrated will incorporate either zombie makeup, old age makeup, and/or severe trauma. The proper makeup tools will be covered, and each student will be required to purchase their own makeup supplies for the class work at hand. Prerequisite(s): NONE Co- Requisite (s): NONE Concurrent Enrollment: NONE Recommended Preparation: Positive Attitude and a Hands- On Attitude towards learning
2 COURSE NOTES: ATTENDANCE: Be prepared to begin class work immediately at 10:00am, tardiness will not be tolerated. Time is of the essence as there is a lot of material to cover in a short period of time. Missing one class can put you at a significant loss, in particular if you are new to this field and its terminology and methodology, as the class curriculum builds on each previous class session. You are expected to attend every lecture, and are expected to participate in every lab. THE BASICS: Come to class prepared to take notes, and to work. Wear old clothes, and arrive with a clean face on each lab day (if you have longer hair, a headband will be handy on lab days). Always bring your makeup kit as well as a washcloth and/or towel for your own cleanup. Students will Workshop on each other or bring models to class. Students are expected to clean up after themselves prior to leaving classroom at end of day. GRADING: The assumption is made that the student is a novice in this profession, and is in class to experience and learn; it is also assumed each student will ne ata different level of artistic ability. Therefore, students will be graded based on attendance and participation, which includes hands- on involvement in all in- class lab assignments. Each class missed or not participated in represents 5% of your GPA, based on the following scale: A % B 80 90% C 70 80% D Below 70% ASSIGNMENTS: Each week s classes focus is on a specific makeup process; one class session being the instructional lecture and/or demo, and the following week s class being the hands- on lab time for the student to try their hand at the same techniques. ADDITIONAL POLICIES: 1). There is no recording of the class of any kind. 2). Cell phones should be turned off and put away for the duration of the class. If you want to stop the class to focus on your phone, class instruction will halt accordingly. 3). Photos of each students work is allowed at the end of instructional class time.
