1 2017 MISSISSIPPI COSMETOLOGY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS APPLICATION AND SKILLS: 1. Can I take the practical examination before I take the written examination? You may take the theory or practical examination at any given time in any order. Upon graduation, you have one year to pass the exam and receive licensure before you have to go back and get brush-up hours. 2. Where do I find the practical test sites? How much time is given on the practical cosmetology examination? You are allowed 2 hours to complete the cosmetology practical examination. 5. What if something happens on the day I am supposed to take my examination and I can t make it to the test site? Will I still be charged the examination fee? Please see attendance policy on page 2 of the Candidate Handbook. 6. Why does the Candidate Handbook say that I should be 30 minutes early for my practical examination? The handbook advises to be 30 minutes early for your practical examination, because the test site must start promptly on time. If you are not present at the starting time, you will be disqualified from the examination and you will have to pay the fees to retake the examination.

2 7. Does the timeframe that is listed for the skills include the setup and take down of the scenario? Yes. The setup and take down of all supplies are included in the timeframe. You will not receive extra time to set up supplies. Sufficient time is allowed in the overall scenario. 8. What if I forget something on my supply list? Can I borrow from someone else? If you forget to bring required supplies, you will be scored accordingly. If you fail to bring the main equipment required for that skill, you could be disqualified. (For example: Haircolor skill requires the candidate to have haircolor labeled correctly). You may not borrow any supplies from another candidate, model or evaluator. 9. Can a Cosmetologist, manicurist or esthetician fail if they do not have all their containers labeled? Even if it is one product? The State of Mississippi requires products and chemicals to be correctly labeled. Please read the supply list carefully. All the items that are required to be labeled are listed and expected to be followed. The entire examination is based on an established cut score. If you fail too many steps within the skill, it is a possibility you will fail the whole examination. Again, if you do not have the required materials or supplies for the required skill; you may be disqualified. (Another example: Chemical Relaxer for chemical relaxing skill). 10. If I fail the haircutting portion of the practical examination, can I just take that part over again or do I have to retake the whole practical examination? The failure of any portion of the practical examination requires the whole test to be taken over. 11. Why do I have to bring a first aid kit? Please see the supplies needed for the practical examination in the candidate handbook. 12. What is required of a cosmetologist, esthetician or manicurist who cuts their own finger or their model? Will they automatically fail? Universal Precautions must be adhered to in all states. You must first stop the skill immediately if you have a blood spill. You must put a glove on the uninjured hand and use your items from the first aid kit. Specifically, you must wipe down the wound, using an antiseptic (not alcohol), bandage it, and put all disposable items in one baggie labeled biohazard. That baggie must then put in another baggie labeled bio-hazard. These bio-hazard baggies must be thrown in your own trash can and not left on the premises anywhere at the test site. If the wound continues to

3 bleed, you must apply a glove to that wound and keep it on for the remaining skills to prevent further contamination. If the wound is too serious, you may have to leave the test site. Remember, no extra time is given for this accident, so be aware of your time. You may or may not be marked for unsafe practices determined by the evaluator. Accidents do happen. If you do not have a first aid kit, you will be disqualified immediately. Another form of unsafe procedures that involve Universal Precautions are someone who wipes their nose on their hand and then touches the model or blows on a model s hand. Even if that model is a mannequin. 13. Will the written examination come from the Milady or Salon Fundamental textbooks? Pearson VUE does not use any questions from the textbooks on the written examination. Practical examination items are written by a committee of Subject Matter Experts and are classified to the content outline. All items have references from both textbooks. 14. What is performed on a mannequin and what is performed on a live model? Cosmetologists and manicurists perform the skills on a mannequin, sand hand or freddy fingers. Estheticians perform skills on a live model. 15. Can I apply for ADA Accommodations if I cannot speak English? No. Speaking a foreign language is not a prerequisite for ADA Accommodations. Please see page 1 in Candidate Handbook. 16. When do I change my draping? Think of your mannequin/model as one client receiving multiple services. If you have a chemical service, the mannequin/model must be double draped with a towel, plastic cape, and towel. If your client is just receiving a haircut, a neckstrip and cape is required. If your client is receiving thermal styling, then a neckstrip and nonflammable (non-plastic) drape. Think about the skill you are performing. HAIRCUTTING: 1. Is the Basic layered haircut a 90-degree haircut? Yes. A 90-degree haircut is a basic layered haircut. You will be advised whether you perform this skill with a razor or shears/scissors by the Evaluator on day of the examination.

4 2. Is there a certain amount of hair that we need to leave on the mannequin for any of the haircuts? A blended haircut states that you must remove a minimum of ¼ of hair on the head. It does not state what length it must be when completed. 3. Do we T-part the mannequin and only work in that one quadrant? Candidates perform a basic layered haircut on their mannequin in one quadrant of the head. The chemicals are performed on one quadrant of the mannequin. Manicurists perform skills on a sand hand or freddy fingers. Estheticians perform skills on a live model. SKIN CARE: 1. Do I need to bring a model for the Esthetician skills? Yes. Estheticians are required to perform skills on a live model. 2. Do estheticians actually speak to their model in the skin analysis skill? Yes. You are required to speak out loud, in English BRAIDING: 1. On the French braid, is a candidate required to do an overhand or underhand braid? Will the Evaluator tell us the day of the examination? You may either do an overhand or underhand braid, either is acceptable. HAIR REMOVAL: 1. Why are candidates only removing hair on one eyebrow? Due to time constraints, only one full eyebrow or whole upper lip is required on hair removal. If you desire, you may remove hair on other brow before the actual examination. You will perform skill on either eyebrow; your choice.

5 CHEMICALS: 1. How do I know when to perform a test curl on my Permanent Wave skill? The day of the practical examination, the Evaluator will read directions and tell you when to perform the test curl. You will have ample time in the skill to perform this step. INSTRUCTORS: 1. Do I need a live model for the Instructor examinations? No. All Instructor examinations are mannequins, sand hands, or artificial foot. 2. Can I bring as many mannequins as I feel I need for the Instructor examination? Yes. Nothing precludes you from having more than one mannequin.
