3 EDITOR S NOTES WHAT IS BUILD-UP? With consistent use and application over time, the products we use on our hair (this can include water) may cause our strands to become coated, affecting not just the look and feel of our hair, but how our hair responds to products as well. Product build up can cause hair to become dry, lifeless and limp and may cause breakage and split ends. Build up is not an issue to be taken lightly. Until build up is removed, the products you use will be unable to penetrate your hair and dryness will continue. some causes of product build-up? Low porosity hair: Hair that has a low porosity has cuticles that are tightly closed making it difficult for moisture and products to penetrate the hair. The products therefore remain on top of the hair which leads to build up and can exacerbate the dryness that comes with low porosity hair. Silicones: Silicones are excellent detangling agents. They offer slip, promote shine and aid in the control of frizz. Some silicones are not water soluble and therefore require the use of shampoos that contains sulfate or a clarifying shampoo at a minimum to remove them. If you are totally against the use of shampoos you should be very careful to avoid using products containing water insoluble silicones. Co-washing, and the use of cleansing conditioners: Regular conditioners are formulated to coat the hair and when used to co-wash will cause build up over time. Cleansing conditioners too will lead to build up as these products are not formulated to remove silicones from the hair. When following a co-washing regimen it is important to use stronger cleansers ever so often to keep build up at bay. options for removing product build-up Using a clarifying shampoo once a month is generally enough to prevent/minimize product build up. Most shampoos, particularly those that are free of sulfates are not sufficient to remove all traces of the agents that build up over time. This is what your clarifying shampoo is for. Many naturals swear by baking soda and apple cider vinegar when it comes to clarifying while others say they have no cleansing effect. 3 RENEW YOUR WOW

6 6 HAIR CARE TIPS FOR HAVANA TWISTS Have you just gotten your new Havana Twisted hairstyle or maybe you re wondering whether Havana hair extensions are for you? Well, we ve got good news for all you naturalistas with Havana Twisted hairstyles as well as those about to get them installed caring for Havana Twists is not as complicated as many imagine it to be. You can cleanse and condition your hair like you normally do, only with some minor modifications. Here are eight hair care tips for Havana Twist styled hair. 1: Shampoo, condition, and moisturize as usual but use a diluted version of your favorite products. To dilute your shampoo, mix it with water in the palm of your hand or in a plastic bottle. Massage on your scalp as usual and rinse off. You can do the same with your conditioner and moisturizer. Watering down your hair care products reduces the chance of leaving unwanted residue on your hair. 2: Moisturize still! Maybe you can get a little lazy applying your moisturizing product because of those chunky twists. Try mixing your moisturizing serum with water in a spritz bottle then spray on your hair and scalp. Cotton causes more friction and can make your hair frizzy so do lay your head on silk if you want your gorgeous twists to last longer. 6: Style your twisted locks gently. Coiling your hair into a bun may overstretch your strands or pull them too aggressively from the roots, causing breakage or hair loss. So whether you are doing your own twists or having it professionally installed, make sure they aren t too tight. And remember to go easy on your hair when styling.

7 4 MAJOR MISTAKES I VE BEEN MAKING WITH MY NATURAL HAIR AND WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM THEM (PART 1) By Christina Patrice info@maneobjective.com /maneobjective MISTAKE #1: I Kept Trying To Make My Hair Something It Wasn t To add insult to injury (and breakage too), I found myself lost in the social media sauce. The Internet is nuts over big hair, and I found myself craaaaaving that Instagramcropped-my-curls-tho look. Normally, my hair would get somewhere there around day 3 or 4, and sometimes 5 depending on what products I used. But I got impatient. I wanted big hair on day 1. So I did all kinds of ridiculously out of character things. I diffused my hair to hell and back. If I didn t like the way my hair was setting with a particular curl definer, I d wash it out and start over. I know this is asinine. I can t believe I m even telling ya ll this. I experimented with an Afro pick, my Q-Redew, and even used the prongs of my diffuser to separate curls and fluff. Then I realized that what I was doing made no sense. Not only was I competing to play in the big hair Olympics of Instagram, I was sacrificing the health of my hair because of it. So I stopped playing, and now my hair is rehabbing in chunky twists. The Fix: Step away from deficit thinking. Focus more on what your hair is and can do, instead of what it isn t and can t do. Easier said than done, and I ll be the first to admit it. I m still learning to appreciate the beauty in others without feeling the need to be like that myself. I ll probably do a social media detox soon. Mistake #2: I Let Outside Voices Influence How I Treated My Hair After a dalliance with the Max Hydration Method, I was at an impasse. Should I continue the MHM or certain portions of it? Should I go back to shampoo or just co-wash? Am I going to use cones or nah? Believe it or not, I did all of the above and then some. Then I began to turn my back on the time-tested things I knew worked for my hair. I let henna (which has done wonders for my hair and scalp) take a back seat to clay masks (mistake). I neglected holy grail status deep conditioners, leave-ins, and moisturizers because they contained cones (like I gave a hoot before MHM). And perhaps most egregious of all, I started cutting corners and cutting out products altogether. 7 RENEW YOUR WOW
