2 Want to take some of the hard work and confusion out of choosing safer skin care products for your children? That s why we created this simple guide for moms. To compile this guide, we used the SkinDeep Database from Environmental Working Group, which is a highly reputable resource for determining the safety or possible danger/toxicity of particular ingredients. They rank products on the basis of their ingredients and give rankings based on the scientific information currently available regarding the known toxicity of that ingredient. It can be extremely helpful to look up each product yourself and see which ingredients are a particular concern and why, but we know that moms are busy and it s hard to find time to look up all of these specifics in the midst of all the things you re doing to care for your clan. We wanted to simplify the process and give you an at-a-glance guide, based on these EWG ratings. Here s how it works: We chose 11 commonly-used skin or personal care products that you probably have in your cupboards or add to your shopping list on a regular basis. For each product category, we researched various brands and then gave them a good/better/best ranking depending on their rating in the EWG SkinDeep Database. A good product has an EWG rating of 3 or 4; a better has a rating of 2, and a best has a rating of 0 or 1 (the least toxic rating possible - yay!).

3 3 We know that you can t a) find all of these brands all the time, and b) don t necessarily have the budget to buy everything in the best category, much as you wish you could. We wanted to give you a way to make the best choices possible that fit with the resources available to you, both in terms of stores and shopping options, and how it fits in with your budget. Here s to healthy, happy babies and kids (and moms that can rest easy, knowing they re doing the best they can with what they ve got)! **Note: Some of the brands included (for example, Aquaphor, Aveeno, Burt s Bees and Tom s) had products that fell within our good/better/best ranking system and were therefore included. BUT these brands also had a number of other products that had a 5 or higher ranking, making them products we can t recommend. For these brands, the specific products we ve included would be satisfactory choices, however if you re considering products outside of the ones we ve mentioned by name, it would be worth looking them up individually in the ewg.org/skindeep database to see how those specific products rank.
