1 FREEDOM HAIR E-NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2008 After a long, hard winter and greatly anticipated but much delayed spring, we in the Midwest find ourselves immersed in the dog days of summer! Whatever happened to our spring? I guess I ll have to give up my dreams of summer-fresh breezes flowing through the house and crank up the air conditioner to stun. Oh well, there s always frozen margaritas to turn to! Want to join me? And, there s our newsletter to read! The topic we have turned to is Fringe! Did you know that everyone in the hair world outside of the U.S. calls bangs, fringe? I like the word simply because it s much nicer than bangs. So this newsletter will be devoted to the many variations of fringe and how to achieve them. If you are like me, you will be experimenting with all of them! From Karen Peterik, owner of New Life Hair ( Chicago area: , Toll-free: The photo above shows me in a new Freedom II Cap with 10 long hair in a light wave. I started with a toasty blonde and added color dimensions with foil high and low-lights. The cut is called a V-Bob with a light shorter fringe covered by a longer fringe layer that sweeps to the side. I really like layering fringe; it provides a lot of interest and variety to the all-important facial area. This style was achieved by using a few pumps of a styling spray at the roots of the crown area; lifted up for volume while drying with a round brush. It was finished off with a light touch with a flat iron. Lastly, I like to use a tiny amount of Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine for shine and definition and it just smells so great!

2 2 This photo shows the same cut in a Half Updo. Tease the crown slightly for volume and casually clip the hair in back higher or lower depending on the amount of lift you are looking for. Side Fringe blends right into the forehead fringe to soften the edges and frame the face. By the way, a 10 length or longer will give you enough length to sweep the sides to the back of the head. Even though I have a shorter fringe, I can sweep it to the side to expose more forehead. Do this while the hair is still drying and you can mold it into place. Clipping it back overnight is another great tip. Use a small butterfly clip so as not to put a ridge in the hair as a bobby pin would do. This is my latest short cut. I was going for a Meg Ryan look with the longer unkempt fringe. The long fringe is actually covering some shorter pieces that I can choose to pull out when I feel like it. This style is easy because I basically just mold damp hair into place with a little holding product and let it air dry. It was originally styled into a sleek straight-ironed inverted bob. I guess this just feels more like me. Only you will know what that feels like!

In this newsletter, we are focusing on bangs. To cut them or not to cut them and how to cut them! In the photo below, you will see one my clients who decided not to cut ANY bangs. Because of the new and improved way that the factory is implanting our beautiful new Freedom Hair prostheses, you now have more flexibility than ever when you order your new hair. (See Hot Off The Press at end of this letter!) In stylish Maria s case, we had the hair implanted so that it would Sidesweep to the left enabling her to part her hair, push it to the side, tuck it behind her ears and NOT cut a bang at all.. By the way, this only works on people who do not mind if their hair tends to fall a bit in their face and who are comfortable tucking their hair behind their ears. It is also necessary to get a light implant so that you don t have too much hair to tuck. A too thick implant will cause your ears to stick out and the hair won t tuck easily

4 4 This second picture is of my lovely client, Irene. She has chosen a short cut with a light bang that looks very natural. In this case as well, less is more when it comes to density. The light density makes it possible for her to have her bangs cut so that a lot of her forehead shows through the bangs, making them look very wispy and natural. The stylist also enhanced their look by cutting them in a V form so that they appear to be starting from higher on her forehead. If you look at the bangs of celebrities in magazines, they always appear to start from further back on the head. This gives the bangs a very natural appearance. One very important aspect of this is the need to design your hairline so that it is spaced far enough back to allow your bangs to fall naturally. If your hairline is too low on your forehead, your bangs will always look too short and stubby. Your bangs will appear longest when your forehead is designed properly! A surefire giveaway that you are wearing hair is to wear your synthetic wig or your Freedom Hair prosthesis too low on your forehead. Look at other people and notice how high their natural hairline is. You can have it the way it should be! To the left is my client Zoe. She s young and pretty and goes half-way between a true bang and no bangs. She cut some longer layers that are pushed to the side leaving the majority of her forehead exposed. The new and improved Freedom II cap along with better implant direction make this look easy to accomplish. 5 5 Ever since sending out the last e-newsletter, clients have been asking about how Martine achieved the fringe shown in these two photos on the left. The two photos below reveal the technique her stylist used for achieving that sexy side sweep! 6 6 Hot Off the Press News from the manufacturer on Fringe!!! Freedom Wigs has just begun offering a new fringe option that we are specifying as Forward Fringe. This means that where the hair is worn down over the forehead, it doesn t split open to each side but rather stays closed. This is controlled by the direction in which the hair is sealed at the time of implant. By the way, the normal default option is the Split Fringe, or open option. We have found this option to be quite versatile as many of us wear our fringe down with a slight opening at the part line. In case you haven t heard yet about the new Freedom II Cap!!! From Murray Barrington, owner of Freedom Wigs : These new All-Silicone Wigs have no other adhesives - the cap is medical-grade silicone reinforced with nylon mesh, and the same silicone is used as the adhesive to bond the hair under the cap. The new silicone is very much stronger than anything that's been available before, and we've doubled the hair 'root' length being bonded. The softness of 'all silicone' means much better security. It can be worn repeatedly in the wrong place on the head, and still 'bounces back' to its original shape with no cap distortion or creases. It's moisture/vapour permeable, so it lets the water vapour passing through our skin (which is most of the perspiration) pass through the cap. It's waterproof, but vapour permeable making it more comfortable in hot conditions. (This means that we can wash the interior without wetting our hair and when we do sweat, our hair remains dry! It s really the best of both worlds.) Karen s personal note: I have been wearing the Freedom II cap for several months now and have noticed a real difference compared with the previous caps. It vacuums better and feels softer, lighter and more comfortable. Also, I ve noticed that it no longer feels slippery when I perspire during heavy exercise. I can run in it without having to resuction it every so often. I have been recommending this cap to all of my clients and have received similar comments from them. Debbi s personal note: I also have a new Freedom Hair II cap that is all silicone and I love it! I have been ordering this cap almost exclusively since February when I got mine.
