1 ROSHIELD 3188 Self-Crosslinking Acrylic Emulsion For Sanding Sealers and Clear Topcoats Over Wood Description ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion is designed for use in factory-applied, waterborne, interior wood coatings. It provides good early sandability, block resistance and stain resistance, as well as extremely low microfoam entrapment. ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion is recommended as a sealer and topcoat in clear coatings and gives excellent clarity over both dark and light woods. Its self-crosslinking chemistry is responsible for its rapid cure and good stain resistance. Typical Properties These properties are typical but do not constitute specifications. In addition, coatings based on this emulsion are easy to sand, producing a fine powder with very little clogging of the sandpaper. Figure 1 shows the hardness development of coatings based on ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion as a function of drying time with different coalescents. (Coalescent level was 17% based on polymer solids, and wet film thickness over glass was 4 mils.) Resistance Properties ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion is especially recommended as a topcoat where stain resistance is important in combination with fast curing and excellent appearance. Table 1 shows that the resistance properties of ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion are comparable to those of RHOPLEX CL-204 and RHOPLEX CL-104 emulsions, which are waterborne coating standards for the furniture industry, as well as to those of nitrocellulose lacquer (NCL), which is the solventborne coating of choice for wood furniture. Testing was done on maple that was sprayed with two coats of Formulation E and allowed to dry at room temperature for two weeks.

3 Formulation Guidelines ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion can be formulated with common additives available for waterborne coatings. However, because of the crosslinking technology used in this emulsion, formaldehyde-containing additives or substrates are not recommended in combination with ROSHIELD The use of such materials may cause slight yellowing of the film. Coalescents Depending on drying conditions and application methods, the selection of a coalescent is critical to obtaining optimum properties for coatings based on ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion. Starting-point formulations E and E contain a blend of coalescent and plasticizers. The plasticizer, in small quantities, gives flexibility to the film without detracting from block properties. A blend of water-miscible and water-immiscible coalescents is recommended for industrial applications. Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether evaporates quickly and improves the flow of ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion while dipropylene glycol monobutyl ether remains slightly longer in the polymer phase and ensures good film formation. However, with increasing concern to reduce the amount of HAPs (hazardous air pollutants), Rohm and Haas Company is also recommending alternative coalescent packages to the ethylene glycol ethers (HAPs). Formulation E is one of these recommendations, and is based on all propylene glycol. This propylene-based coalescent combination is an excellent alternative to ethylene-based coalescent formulations. Mar Aids The addition of Michem Emulsion and Tego Glide 410 will provide excellent mar and slip resistance. Levels of 5-6% Michem Emulsion and 0.5-1% of Tego Glide 410 on polymer solids are recommended. Flatting Aids Silica flatting aids, such as Syloid 7000, are recommended for flatting coatings based on ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion. Formaldehyde-containing flatting aids should not be used. Defoamers Tego Foamex 805 is a very effective defoamer for formulations containing ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion and does not cause any surface defects. A 2 to 1 blend of Tego Foamex 805 and BYK 024 is also effective. One percent total defoamer (products as supplied) on the total weight of the formulation is recommended. Care should be exercised with high levels of silicone defoamers, as they can cause craters in the film. Wetting Aids The addition of an additive such as Surfynol 104DPM provides good surface wetting and reduces the tendency for formulations based on ROSHIELD 3188 acrylic emulsion to crater or picture frame. Viscosity Control Starting point formulations E and E were developed for conventional spray applications. Since propylene-type coalescents used in these formulations give higher viscosities than ethylene co-solvents, little if any rheology modifier is needed. However, ACRYSOL RM-825 nonionic rheology modifier can be used in these formulations to control viscosity for air-assisted, airless spray applications, curtain coater and roller applications. This rheology modifier is associative and, as such, the addition of surfactants will change the rheology profile of the formulation. Formulation The ingredients in the following formulation should be added under medium shear. Mixing should be continued for 15 minutes after addition of all the ingredients and the formulation should be allowed to equilibrate for 24 hours. This coating can be air-dried at room temperature (22 C {72 F}, 55% RH).
