1 JD in the Summer Sun
2 JD in the Summer Sun Lydia Steeves Little JD was a young raccoon that came to our backyard a few years ago around Father's Day. He was a bit skinny and his fur was not great. We soon realized he was orphaned. Each day we set out a meal for him... bananas, grapes and kitty kibble. Here he is rolling in the cool grass mid July during a heat wave. Pan Pastels: Bright Yellow Green 680.5, Turquoise 580.5, Magenta 430.5, Diarylide Yellow Extra Dark Pencil Palette - Prismacolor Premier: Black PC935, Warm Grey 90% PC1058, Rosy Beige PC1019, Chestnut PC1081, French Grey 10% PC1068, French Grey 30% PC1072, French Grey 90% PC1076, Light Umber PC941, Sky Blue Light PC1086, White PC938, Colourless Blender PC1077, Cerulean Blue PC103, Limepeel PC1005, Apple Green PC912, Green Ochre PC1091, Grey Green Light PC289, Sap Green Light PC120, Black Cherry PC1078 Other Supplies: pencil, ruler, very thin stylus, waxless graphite paper, 4-5 triangular make up sponges, Krylon workable fixative, kneaded eraser, drawing board or other sturdy support, large mop brush or swifer, good quality hand held sharpener, battery operated eraser (optional), waterbrush and Gamsol odorless mineral spirits (OMS), Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastel, grey paper stumps or tortillions, Golden archival spray varnish. Paper - Stonehenge Pearl Grey or Natural 9" x 12" Preparation: Measure and cut your paper. Copy your pattern onto tracing paper by hand or by home printer. Cut off excess paper. Tape in place so you know where you will be applying the pan pastel. Tip... copy your pattern onto an overhead transparency using your home printer if possible, so you can check details during the colouring process. Background: Tip. make a tester before beginning on your piece of paper. Use the triangular make up sponges to apply the pan pastel. Begin with patches of Bright Yellow Green. Blend and fade. Pick up Turquoise next and add more patches. Have some overlap the Bright Yellow Green patches. Pick up Bright Yellow Green again and work more patches and blend the two in a dappled sunlight manner. Using a new sponge, pick up Magenta. Gently add a few patches. Blend with a fresh new sponge. The last colour is Diarylide Yellow Extra Dark to soften and make a natural look. Try not to lose the patches of Bright Yellow Green. Repeat the colours as you like. Remove with the kneaded eraser if needed.
3 Spray with Krylon workable fixative. Spray just enough that the pastel does not rub off on your hand. Using a thin pen or stylus, transfer your pattern carefully. Press off extra graphite and smudges. Remove the graphite but leave the pattern in place. Using the stylus, emboss the whiskers into the paper. Emboss the chest hairs now as well. Remember to jump over the grasses. Colour Pencil: Work on eyes, nose and mouth and first layer of grasses simultaneously, letting the OMS dry between steps. Eyes Press in a sparkle with White. Then, with a very sharp Black, colour in the eyes with medium pressure and lighter pressure where the highlights will be. Dry. Create a secondary highlight in the eyes with Cerulean Blue and then brighten a bit with Sky Blue Light. Sparkle the eyes with White and perhaps a final highlight of Neocolor II. Bring back Black if needed. Blend with the paper stump if needed. Using Warm Grey 90% colour in the mask as well as under the jaw line and muzzle. Highlight the membranes with French Grey 10%. Look carefully. Perk it up with White. Bring back the Warm Grey 90% to help achieve a soft look. Use French Grey 30% to help achieve that soft look, too if needed. Nose With Warm Grey 90%, colour in the nose with medium pressure. Using Black, colour in the nostrils fairly solidly. Apply OMS to the nose and nostrils. Dry. Highlight with Sky Blue Light on the top and around the nostrils. Make little tight circles to help create the texture of a nose. Start where you see things brightest and fade. Keep your pencil sharp. You may need to repeat the Warm Grey 90%. Apply with the tight circles again. Highlight further with White. Blend with the stump with the same motion of tight scribbles. If you need to add more wax, use your colourless blender. Add a bit of a further dark value with Black at the bottom of the nose. Repeat as needed. Mouth Colour in the teeth with White. Colour in the lower lip with Black. Be careful with the shape. Colour in the tongue with Rosy Beige. Keep in mind that there will be little lines of fur coming over the tongue so create that now. Colour in the black you see just above the bottom teeth with Black or Warm Grey 99%.
4 Shade the tongue with Chestnut at the back keeping in mind those little lines of fur. Fade towards the front. Use a very light touch. Repeat the Rosy Beige starting from the front. Repeat the Chestnut. Highlight with French Grey 10%. Shade further with French Grey 90%. Blend values with the stump. (Make sure the tip is clean). Shade the teeth with a little French Grey 90% and French Grey 30%. Blend with the stump. Highlight with White and then you may have to perk them up with the Neocolor II but don't make them too white or they will stand out and make him look ferocious. Highlight the lower lip with Sky Blue Light. Notice it is not evenly highlighted. Colour in the grasses with Limepeel. This is just for placement. Press off graphite as you go along. Face Using French Grey 10% begin to establish the light areas of fur: muzzle, eye brows, chin and jaw line and the edge of the ears. Sharpen up the pencil and add some short lines to begin the salt and pepper colouring. Don't forget to start the ear fluff. Depending on your colour paper choice it will show a lot or not too much but you do have to do it. Press off graphite as you go. Next colour is Light Umber. Gently colour in the lines of whisker pockets. Colour in the marking coming up from his nose. Add shade to some of the light markings and then put in an all over coating of Light Umber in the salt and pepper fur and on his chest. It's a good colour. (End of part one of movie.) And the next colour is French Grey 90%. Put in some of this colour in the mask and then in the salt and pepper fur. Make more individual hairs on the salt and pepper fur. Try to get the marking to blend into the salt and pepper fur. It can also go into the mask for extra interest. His chest is coloured in rather messily. Colour the inside of his ears now, too. Apply the OMS over all his fur and the grasses too. Dry. See mid way photo Now we put on Warm Grey 90% on the mask again. Colour the mask and then as you get to the outer edge pay attention to your strokes to join the mask with the whiter area. On the side close to the muzzle make sure you have nice little sharp lines. Sharpen the pencil and add some lines in the salt and pepper fur. Colour in the darkest part of the ear. Colour in the nose marking, too. Join it nicely to the ear fluff. Colour in the chest. Start where it is darkest and be a bit messy. Using French Grey 30% work on his salt and pepper fur making lines to add a grey tone and to help blend the others colours already on. Use this colour on the dark mask as a highlight under
5 his eyes. And use it on the light colour fur to add body and change shapes. Make beautiful markings above the eyes. Add to the ear fluff. And don't forget to put some wispy hairs on his chest. Highlight the fingers now if you have decided to put in his hand. Bring back the French Grey 90% to shade the fingers and other areas needed on the chest. Spend a little time with this colour. Look at the ears now Use French Grey 10% to continue on the ear fluff. Add White to brighten. Use Black to darken inside the darkest part of the ears. Blend with the stump. Add French Grey 90% to add some of the darker fur. Add Light Umber to add a brownish look. Finish with French Grey 10%. Dark marking from the nose up between the eyes - Light Umber is the brown, French Grey 90% is repeated for a dark value but you may need some Warm Grey 90%, too. Blend with the stump. Add Black carefully to the mask. Begin in the darkest areas like around the eyes and then just pull it out gently. Don't make the whole mask pitch black. You are just adding another layer. Blend with the stump. Muzzle Add sharp Light Umber to add more definition to the whisker pockets and beyond. Sharpen French Grey 10% to add some nice sharp short hairs especially on the edges. Brighten with White. Work his jaw line, too. Don't let it grow too wide though. You may have to come back with the French Grey 90%. Whiskers With a sharp White, put in his whiskers. Check his hand. Add Warm Grey 90% to darken the shade on the fingers. White markings Make sure you have the right shapes. Use the French Grey 10% first. Make them handsome. Join them to the mask. Add White to brighten in a few spots. Use the Light Umber to shade. Blend with the stump. Salt and pepper fur Repeat all your colours as needed. Make sure your pencils are sharp. Light Umber for s brown look. French Grey 90% for a dark brown grey. Warm Grey 90% is the darkest value. French Grey 30% is your mid-value/blending colour. Add French Grey 10% for some lighter hairs. You can also put in a few White ones if needed. Grass Now finish the grass. You have already coloured in the grasses with Limepeel for placement and general blocking in. Colour again as needed and begin to add highlights, to create flips and to create the striated textures with Grey Green Light. Colour over the grasses as you like with Apple Green. Shade, texture and tone with Green Ochre.
6 Repeat any of the colours used so far if needed. Tone the Apple Green with Sap Green Light. Add Cerulean Blue for tints of interest. You could also use the Sky Blue Light for an extra highlight if you like. Keep on playing. When ready add some extra shadow by lightly colouring Black Cherry. Repeat the Green Ochre over top to control it and to blend. Blend with a tortillion if needed. Add any of your greens back as you like: Limepeel, Apple Green, Sap Green Light. Add a bit of Black Cherry in the darkest areas of the mask and perhaps even the chest. Use Green Ochre to darken behind some grasses. Spray with Golden Archival varnish to control waxy bloom.
