1 Introduction This is a mandatory Unit within the Level 3 Hairdressing qualification. It is about providing a thorough and comprehensive consultation and advisory service to clients. In addition, learners must also provide support to colleagues who may be experiencing analysis problems. Learners must be able to advise clients on alternative courses of action, should the results of their analysis conclude the hair and / or scalp is unsuitable for the required service. They must also have the necessary knowledge and competence to refer clients for specialist service where necessary. All the evidence gained for this Unit must come from the learners everyday work, as simulation is not permitted. However, when making recommendations to clients (outcome 3), if performance evidence is not available the range may be covered fully by knowledge evidence. The main outcomes of this Unit are: 1 Identify clients needs and wishes. 2 Analyse the hair, skin and scalp. 3 Make recommendations to clients. 4 Advise clients on hair maintenance and management. 5 Agree services with your client. How are learners assessed? Learners need to carry out a comprehensive consultation and advisory service to the clients on at least three separate occasions, covering consultation for three different technical units. Learners must have considered all the possible factors that may limit or affect the service they are about to provide. Questioning, observation and testing should have identified these factors.

3 Resources G21.A2 Calculating the bill: case study G21.A3 The basic structure of the hair and skin Notes This activity sheet is designed to be used as a tool to ensure learners understand what should be included in a client s bill and also to test their numeracy skills. An answer sheet is provided for this activity. You need to give the learners the following information prior to them starting the case study. Many salons today have very specific payment policies. Learners must be aware of these when calculating a client s bill to ensure the salon doesn t lose money. The following are examples of the types of policies that salons may employ: A sliding scale of charges, depending on the stylist s experience. Deposits paid for costly or time-consuming services. Deposits paid for busy periods, e.g. New Year s Eve. The types of payments accepted by the salon, e.g. cash, cheque, debit card, credit card, voucher. Charges for additional extras, e.g. retail products, refreshments etc. This is a label the diagram activity requiring some explanation as to what each of the parts of the hair and skin are and what they do. The learners may use this as a revision tool. An answer sheet is provided for this activity. Give each of the groups one of the stages of the hair growth cycle to research. This may be done using the Internet, textbooks etc. They then need to present their findings to the rest of the group. They should then think about the advice they would give to their colleague (if the colleague were a client). This task should be carried out as if it were in preparation for a colouring service. (Learners are to use an intense red colour mixed with 9% developer for their test cuttings.) These case studies are designed to test the learners underpinning knowledge relating to pre-service testing. Different questions are posed for different tests. Role play scenarios looking at the different aftercare advice that should be given in a range of circumstances. This hair prescription is for the learners to complete and give to their clients outlining the aftercare advice they have given. The information contained in this is not exhaustive; you may add or delete items as necessary. Hair extension services require a deposit of 100 when booking the appointment. All stylists charge the same price for a service; however, the junior stylists charge significantly less. Below is a list of the salon s charges. She purchases a shampoo ( 10.65) and a conditioner ( 12.35) for colour treated hair. Client 2 Has an appointment for hair extensions with Joanne, the salon owner. She has 3 glasses of fruit juice during the service and purchases the salon s recommended shampoo and conditioner at a cost of each. Client 3 Has an appointment with Thierry, the salon s hair-up expert, as she s attending a special function. She has a coffee during the service and purchases some hair spray at a cost of Client 4 Has an appointment with Amii, the junior stylist, for a cut and blow-dry service. She has a cup of tea during the service and purchases both a styling and a finishing product to use at home. The styling product costs 9.45 and the finishing product Client 5 Has an appointment for a piggy back perm with Nuria, the perming technician. She has a cup of tea and a fruit juice during the service. She also purchases a shampoo ( 9.45) and conditioner ( 11.95) for permed hair. Client 6 Has been colouring her hair at home and made a real mess of it. She has an appointment to see Ross, the colouring technician, so he can sort it out for her. She has 4 cups of coffee during the service and leaves the salon after purchasing a shampoo ( 11.85), a conditioner ( 13.50) and a penetrating conditioner ( 16.50) to use at home.

For the test cuttings you should use an intense red permanent colour mixed with 9% hydrogen peroxide. You carried out a test, whereby you dampened the hair and gently pulled the hair; the hair stretched quite a lot but didn t return to its original length. 1 Which test did you carry out? 2 Why did the hair stretch and not return to its original length? 3 What would have happened had you not carried out the test? 4 What advice can you give the client based on the result of this test? Client 4 Client 4 arrived at the salon to have her hair coloured and was very excited. She d had a skin test two days prior to the appointment and had no problem. The client had had her hair coloured black for as long as she could remember and was now about to have pink slices through her hair. To ensure the client is not allergic to the products used. 2 What has caused the area to become red, inflamed and itchy? An allergic response. 3 What advice can you give her regarding the subsequent service and how to deal with the inflamed area? The desired service is not possible as the client is allergic to the product. The client should Client 2 wash the area with warm water and apply soothing products such as calamine lotion. If the irritation persists, she should contact her GP. Client 2 arrived at the salon for a colouring service. She has openly said she has always coloured her hair at home but now wants a change. She had a skin test two days ago and had no problem. However, you decided to carry out another test before going any further the results of this test were that the liquid that the hair was immersed in began to effervesce and become hot. 1 Which test was carried out? An incompatibility test. 2 Why was this test carried out? To test for the presence of metallic salts, as they react with hydrogen peroxide. 3 How should this test be carried out? Take a cutting of hair from the affected area and secure with cotton or sellotape. Pour 20 mls of liquid 6% hydrogen peroxide into a non-metallic bowl and add 5 drops of ammonium hydroxide. Leave for up to 30 minutes.

20 4 What advice can you give the client based on the result of this test? The hair is not suitable for the desired service. In some cases an alternative may be suggested. However, the alternative product must NOT be a colouring product that is mixed with hydrogen peroxide, e.g. a true semi-permanent colour (the ones that are used direct from the bottle and NOT mixed with anything). 5 What would have happened had you not carried out the test? Client 3 The hair may have changed colour (but not to the colour required). Extreme heat would have been given off, causing the hair to disintegrate and burns to the scalp. Client 3 arrived at the salon for a perming service. Her hair had been coloured and didn t appear to be in the best condition. You carried out a test, whereby you dampened the hair and gently pulled the hair; the hair stretched quite a lot but didn t return to its original length. 1 Which test did you carry out? An elasticity test. 2 Why did the hair stretch and not return to its original length? The hair has internal damage (in the cortex). 3 What would have happened had you not carried out the test? The hair condition would have deteriorated and the hair may have broken off. 4 What advice can you give the client based on the result of this test? A course of restructuring treatments to repair the internal fibres. The perming service must not be carried out until the hair has fully recovered. Client 4 Client 4 arrived at the salon to have her hair coloured and was very excited. She d had a skin test two days prior to the appointment and had no problem. The client had had her hair coloured black for as long as she could remember and was now about to have pink slices through her hair. You decide to carry out another test, to check whether you will be able to achieve the right result as she has a real build-up of black colour on her hair. 1 Which test did you carry out? Test cuttings. 2 What result would you expect from the test? It s unlikely that the pink colour will be as the client requires, due to a build-up of black colour.

21 3 What is likely to have happened had you not carried out the test? An unsatisfactory result and an unhappy client. 4 What advice can you give your client based on the result of this test? Client 5 You have several options. Firstly apply a cleansing shampoo to remove some of the artificial colour pigments from the hair, then carry out a further test cutting to see if the desired result can be achieved. Or, suggest the client only has the black colour on the regrowth to prevent the build-up of colour. Either way, the desired service may not be able to take place. Client 5 arrived at the salon for a perming service. During the consultation you took a few strands of her hair (prior to shampooing) and ran your fingers down the length of the hair. The hair felt silky, smooth all the way down the hair shaft. 1 Which test did you carry out? A porosity test. 2 What do the results of your test indicate to you? Take turns to play the stylist and advise your partner as if they were your client. Your advice should include: the correct shampoo and conditioner for home use the correct styling and finishing products for home use which tools and equipment to use to recreate the look (where applicable) when to re-book (how long the service will last before it needs to be re-done) any products that should be avoided any other relevant advice. Client 1 Donna has just had a complete re-style. She has gone for a whole new look. Her hair is medium in texture and density and is coloured fairly regularly. She is anxious as she is unsure of how to maintain and recreate her look. Client 2 Serena has had her hair put up for a special occasion. Her hair is fine in texture and medium in density. She has asked you how she can maintain the look for as long as possible. Client 3 Sally has had a colouring service that included a full head colour and some weaves and slices. Her hair is medium in texture and quite dense. She loves the colour and wants it to last as long as possible. What can you tell her? Client 4 Marisol has had a piggyback wind perm service. She loves the bouncy curls. Her hair is medium in texture and density. Her hair is un-coloured and shoulder length. What advice should you give her? Client 5 Sophie has had her hair thermally styled. She has African-Caribbean type hair that is fine in texture and medium in density. Her hair has natural woven hair extensions to give her more length. Your advice should cover both the hair extensions and thermal styling service. Client 6 Sheree has had a plaiting service of creative cornrows.
