Nomenclature s are designated by the tradename Sicovit, the shade, a two-digit numeral, and the E-number E 172. The legislature distinguishes between four fields of application: 1st field of application: Colourants for all applications: 2nd field of application: Colourants for all applications ecept for the area of the eyes: 3rd field of application: Colourants for products that may not be used in applications that involve contact with the mucous membranes. 4th field of application: Colourants for products that come into contact with the skin for only short periods. In the US, they are regulated by the code of federal regulations Para and USP/NF for red and yellow grades. In Japan they are regulated by the JSQI.

All Sicovit grades are kosher quality. Physical and chemical properties Solubility s are pigments and, therefore, insoluble ph stability The ph of a 1% dispersion of the pigments in water was adjusted to various values. The stability was evaluated after a period of one hour or one week, respectively, by comparison against a 1% dispersion without ph adjustment (cf. Table 2). 6 EMM e-07 June 2008 Page 6 of 8 Sicovit Stability to light and heat The pigments were dispersed in a lacquer, which was drawn down onto paper board. After the drawndown had dried, it was eposed to a enon lamp (Suntest instrument). After eposure periods of 1, 5, and 10 hours, the stability was evaluated by comparison against uneposed specimens (cf. table 4). The comparison was made on the five-grade grey scale (DIN 54001). 5: up to 5% loss in colour strength 4: up to 10% loss in colour strength 3: up to 20% loss in colour strength 2: up to 30% loss in colour strength 1: > 30% loss in colour strength The data shown for stability to heat (cf. table 3). Table 3 applies to the products in the powder form after they have been kept for four hours at the temperature cited. Soap Lipstick Mascara Eye shadow Make-up Pigments The stability of the pigment in the medium concerned must be verified by eperiment in each case. These colourants are unsuitable for dyeing hair. Suggested formulations for the various applications will be given on request. Storage Sicovit pigments have a storage stability of at least 5 years (provided that they are stored in unopened original containers, protected from light, and under normal conditions of temperature and humidity). Once a container has been opened to remove part of the contents, it must be tightly closed again, as otherwise the absorption of moisture may favour the growth of microorganisms. Ideally the product should be stored in a low humidity environment and filled into a well sealable container if the original packaging unit has bean opened. For product stored longer than one year, the customer is advised to retest the material for microbiology contamination before use.
