3 EDITOR S NOTES It s that time of the year again, and I want to end 2014 with some favorites from my Naughty or Nice List. DO trim ends going into colder months. Dry brittle damaged ends will only become progressively more dry and brittle leading to tangles and breakage, compromising the integrity and strength of the entire strand. DO shampoo your hair less while increasing your conditioning. Conditioning restores moisture which is exactly what you need. Co-washing is particularly helpful in keeping hair moisturized in the colder months. Be extra generous with your conditioner. You should also deep condition more frequently as well. DON T use water that is too warm on your hair. We know you want to stay warm in the shower especially because it s so cold outside but warm water opens the cuticles of our hair. Open cuticles facilitate moisture loss so not only should you shower with lukewarm water or the coolest water you can stand, you should do the same when washing your hair. This will ensure your cuticles stay closed sealing moisture into your hair. DO protective styling. You want to keep your ends tucked away as much as possible. Avoid letting you hair rest on the thick fabrics of your coats and avoid exposing your hair to the elements. When wearing hats ensure your hair is properly protected with a satin scarf or cap of some kind. It s even better if the hat is satin lined. DO use ph balanced products. Aloe Vera Gel or do Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinses to aid in keeping cuticles closed. Aloe Vera Juice is great as it will provide moisture as well as help close your cuticles. 5 With the cold winter months upon us I wanted to highlight some of the Oils that I like to use to keep my hair in the best shape possible as the temperature continues to drop. 1. emu Oil From a sealing moisture point of view, this oil is very light, blends in quickly and definitely does its job. I don t like a lot of build-up in my hair so if you are looking to seal your hair with an oil, because of its lightness, emu oil, would be a contender. Also helps to stimulate hair growth. 2. Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) This rather heavy oil helps to thicken hair, making it strong from the inside out. It helps to increase blood flow to the scalp sending nutrients to hair follicles which helps hair growth. It is great as a sealant, especially in the cooler months. 3. Kukui Nut Oil Is high in omegas 3 & 6 which soothes and soften hair without leaving a greasy film. Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, it contains powerhouse antioxidants that help protect and prevent aging and damaged hair. 4. Coconut Oil Penetrates the hair follicle. Rich in Vitamin E and helps strengthen the hair by building protein. This oil is great for finger detangling and as a pre-poo. Under cooler temperatures, coconut oil will begin to solidify when this happens just scoop a little out with your fingers and rub it between your palms to warm it up for easy application. 5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) Penetrates the hair shaft and promotes scalp health, fighting off fungi and bacteria. It s full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, helps prevent hair loss and retains the moisture in your hair. EVOO alone or mixed with your regular hair conditioner makes a great deep conditioner. Adding some scalp-stimulating essential oils like peppermint or tea tree to makes a good scalp massage oil or hot oil treatment. OILS TO SEAL IN MOISTURE

6 WHY WON T MY HAIR GROW? Many naturals can relate to getting to a point in their natural hair journey where their hair seems to have stopped growing. After being natural for a few years it seems your growth has stalled. Perhaps your hair feels dry all the time despite the fact that you keep applying moisturizers. You are at a loss. Here are some potential reasons as to why your hair has remained short. H E A L T H S T A R T S I N S I D E P R O T E C T I V E S T Y L I N G If you aren t eating well and nourishing your hair from the inside, nothing you do on the outside is going cause your hair to flourish. You need protein, lots of vitamins and minerals from fruits and veggies and plenty of water in order for your hair to thrive. Many consider multivitamins? Remember also that all other areas of the body will get their nutrients before the hair and scalp does so be sure to pay attention to your diet so you can correct any and all deficiencies. T O O M U C H S T Y L I N G Too much tension on hair will literally rip your hair from the follicles. All your protective styling will be for naught if you do it so tightly you pull your hair out so always be mindful of the tension and stress you put on your hair. Protective styles are great. However, they do not excuse you from caring for your hair. You should still be moisturizing your hair and taking care of your scalp. Some protective styles make it difficult to keep hair moisturized and should not be left in for long periods as the hair and scalp will suffer. M O I S T U R E I S K I N G The ends of your hair must be kept moisturized in order to retrain length. Not sleeping with your hair protected under a satin cap or scarf, not sleeping on a satin pillowcase and/or/not sealing in your moisture with an oil or butter will risk moisture loss and dry ends. Product build up will also prevent moisture from penetrating your hair so, clarifying might be what you need.
