2 Health care through experience Why focus on elderly people? Nowadays demographic changes are becoming more and more important in our society. People live longer and this is reflected in the growing population of over- 50-year-olds. In addition, it seems that health and beauty care is becoming a must among senior citizens, and even if this segment includes retired people, it seems likely to remain a strong consumer group with the potential to become, in the near future, the most important and valuable one in the cosmetics market. BATH GELS Different needs different properties It is common knowledge that elderly people have different needs regarding health and beauty care when compared with younger population segments. Among other characteristics, aging skin is more fragile, paler, drier and also more sensitive. The same applies to the hair, as changes occur in the hair cuticle and cortex. KAO Chemicals Europe, in line with the latest market demands and trends, has developed a complete cosmetic formulation range for hair, skin and body care, consisting of our best and newest products. 2

3 I. SKIN CARE The most common factor of elderly skin is that it is usually dry. This is because as people age the skin gets thinner as well as losing collagen and elastin, and because of that it is less able to retain moisture. In addition, elderly skin has fewer defenses, making it more vulnerable to external aggression from cold, wind and sunlight. MOISTURIZING CREAM Ref. C-213 This formulation is a neutral, light, soft and highly emollient cream specially designed for dry and mature skin. It can be used all over the body, soothing and firming the skin and improving its natural beauty. Incorporating active ingredients such as papaya fruit, it protects the skin whilst moisturizing, without leaving a greasy feeling. In this case LEVENOL H&B, a glycerin-derived 100% active surfactant, provides a highly moisturizing effect, while AKYPO RLM 100 acts as an emulsifier combined with Cetearyl alcohol, for consistent creaminess without soapiness. For cosmetic applications, vegetable-origin fatty alcohols are used, mainly coconut alkyl chain (C12/14), because of the high foaming properties required for cleansing products. AKYPO also enhances coacervate formation, improving the adsorption of insoluble agents such as silicones. The AKYPO range consists of water-in-oil emulsifiers for lotions or creams. SHAMPOOS Whilst anti-aging products have historically focused on the skin and its protection, this has now been extended to the hair with the aim of keeping it looking shiny and healthy, an appearance associated with youthfulness. Formulators therefore work on a wide range of products, all of which are designed to meet the needs of elderly people. C-217 This anti-aging shampoo is designed for mature, weakened and lifeless hair. This product contains keratin, said to help strengthen and protect hair, restoring its volume and body while smoothing any brittle edges. This formulation includes, among other surfactants, LEVENOL H&B, which has a moisturizing effect without compromising foaming and viscosity, and DANOX PL-10, a pearlizing agent that gives cosmetics an appearance of richness and luxury, making them more attractive. SHAMPOO FOR GRAY HAIR Ref. C-216 Graying of the hair, one of the major indicators of aging, involves a loss of pigment from the hair shafts and a progressive loss of hair bulbs. This gray hair shampoo is specially formulated to provide vitamins, nutrients and moisture to aging hair. While shampooing massage the scalp, as this stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles, delivering nutrients and oxygen. The shampoo also has bluing tints that eliminate the yellowing effect. AKYPO FOAM RL 40 provides excellent wet hair detangling and combing force, and imparts smoothness during rinse-off. In addition, AKYPO enhances coacervate formation, affording higher deposition on hair of polymers and hydrophobic raw materials such as silicone and UV filters. Learn more about KAO products... C-210 This product gently washes and respects the hair and scalp. It is enriched with vitamins and minerals, said to prevent and visibly improve hair loss, helping to restore and stimulate its growth. BETADET S-20, a very mild co-surfactant, has been incorporated in this formulation to help boost foaming and guarantee good cold stability. Moreover, AMIDET N acts as a very mild thickener while preserving foaming properties. LEVENOL H&B (INCI name: ) is a multifunctional and versatile non-ionic co-surfactant for hair and body care. It performs as a thickener and foam booster in rinse-off cleansers, but at the same time improves skin and hair conditioning due to its ester chemical nature. Being a glycerin derivative, LEVENOL H&B additionally shows good skin moisturizing properties. LEVENOL H&B needs no cautionary labelling as it presents no risk either for human use or for the environment. LEVENOL H&B is readily biodegradable under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, shows low aquatic toxicity and is very mild for the skin and eyes. LEVENOL H&B is a concentrated surfactant, 100% active matter, liquid even at low temperature, almost colorless and odorless, of vegetable origin, and free of solvents and preservatives. 4 5

C-218 When it comes to mature hair, which is consequently more sensitive and fragile, the use of shampoo alone is not enough. Conditioners too play an important role. This formulation provides a conditioning and smoothing effect through the use of compounds such as keratin, polymers and alcohols, as well as KAO surfactants such as AMIDET APA-22 and LEVENOL H&B. ECO HAIR CONDITIONER Ref. C-136 KAO, in line with its commitment to the environment and to the end user, presents this ECO hair conditioner which contains QUARTAMIN BTC 131 and TETRANYL CO-40, both conditioning agents with good biodegradability and low toxicity to aquatic organisms. Together, they have extraordinary synergic effects in terms of performance. This green cream rinse formulation also has higher performance levels than other market products. AMIDET APA-22 is a highly effective cationic surfactant for conditioning when properly neutralized with an acid, and has a better sensory profile than other more widely used monoalkyl quats. 6

C-215 This shower gel has been designed in accordance with the current market This formulation is focused on the needs of mature skin. This product is a clear shower gel which contains glycerine and emollients to reinforce its nourishing action, including natural sunflower oil and olive oil to provide further nutrients to the skin. Its three-way action affords cleansing, moisturizing and anti-aging protection. The combination of AMIDET N with AKYPO ROX CO 400 in the same formula creates a synergy in terms of solubilising effects, thus obtaining a clear composition. Moreover, AMIDET N as a main co-surfactant acts as a very mild thickener with foam boosting properties. AKYPO FOAM RL 40 Sodium Laureth-5 Carboxylate SUCCIDET S 30 UK trends of SLES-free formulations. Described as mild and soft, it is enriched AMIDET N with antioxidant, offers daily skin protection, and contains ingredients that help stimulate cell renewal. This formulation includes, among other KAO products, AKYPO FOAM RL 40, a mild foam booster, and AMIDET N, a nitrosamine-free thickener which enhances foam while reducing the irritation level induced by anionics.
