With all the hype surrounding ALA-PDT, Peptides and numerous other treatments for skin rejuvenation, it s sometimes hard to know where to start. The answer is quite simple: start at the beginning with the first food of life Colostrum! Cytokines help increase T-cell activity and stimulate production of immunoglobulins. One cytokine, Interleukin- 10, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent that has been shown to have a profound effect on pain relief. Interleukins have shown particular promise in fighting cancer. Lysozymes Helps protect the body from bacterial infections. Lysozyme has actually been shown to destroy bacteria on contact and is an effective topical antibiotic. GROWTH FACTORS Medical studies have shown that the vital growth factors from bovine Colostrum are practically identical to human Colostrum in composition. 3 Environ Annual Meeting We just returned from an exciting 10 days in South Africa. Our trip was comprised of an advanced course in skin science, an update on all the new and exciting products that will be launched shortly, as well as cutting edge research that will lead to new products in the coming months, and a master class in training techniques. Environ only releases new or improved products when they are measurably better than existing products on the market and can make a real difference in skin conditions. NEW BROCHURES A new brochure designed for your clients and patients explaining the Environ system is going to be released in the next month. Available in reasonable quantities at no charge, this informative and attractive publication is a great way to introduce Environ to your practice, makes a wonderful addition to your waiting area, and answers many frequently asked questions about skin care and Environ. An improved DF Ionzyme Machine pamphlet is also available. It explains the purpose and function of Pulsed Iontophoresis and Low Frequency Sonophoresis to your clients and includes several sets of before and after photos. POINT OF SALE CUBES This winter there will be a series of point of sale display cubes with wonderful graphics for each Environ Range. These can be used on counter tops, case displays or as wall or mobile decorations. We expect to have these available prior to the holiday season. There is no charge for cubes on orders over $1,000. NEW PRODUCTS The Environ Research and Development team has been hard at work continuing to ensure Environ is one step ahead in the skin care industry. New, state-of-the-art products are on the horizon. It is anticipated that over the coming 18 months, 14 new or improved products will be released. Sebumask is set to be released in late October. Details on this kaolin based product include active ingredients of tea tree oil, vitamin E and salicylic acid. One would use it as one uses Claytech Masque but for problematic and acneic skin. Improved Serum C-Quel, now in 10 ml bottles, is presently available. Added active ingredients include a more effective Vitamin C for ionization, and Retinol to replace Retinyl Acetate. The price remains the same for the 10 ml size as was for the 5 ml. C-Quence 4 is also being released in October. Please remember, this is a very, very potent product and should only be given to clients who are currently using C-Quence 3 and Retinol 2. If they move up too soon to this highly effective product, a temporary retinoid reaction will result. Not everyone can or should move up to C-Quence 4. In the future, expect to see an entire new concept in treating pigmentation. The results are extraordinary. This new generation product is more effective and brings to the market new, safe ingredients and technology. While testing is ongoing and Des and his R & D team will only release a product when they are completely satisfied it is the best on the market, we were bowled over with what we saw and heard. The future of high tech skin care is exciting. A Self Tanner and efficacious and luxurious Body Treatments are on the horizon, as are additions to the ground breaking Ionzyme Range of anti-aging products. Dr. Des has also put together a home cool peeling kit to compliment the professional, in-office, strength peels. This will allow your patients the opportunities to self administer a series of light peels as a follow up maintenance program until the next professional treatment. These are particularly effective in treating some forms of acne, light pigmentation and to reduce the signs of photo-aging. 4 A Total Program of Care for Age Management by Alexandra J. Zani A growing trend in medical practices is the expansion into ancillary services. Rising operational costs of a medical business have forced physicians to take a look at how they can expand and better serve their patients. Moreover it also will supplement the requirements of an aging populace who are not about to settle for a rocking chair. The boomers are being forced to work way beyond what was considered years ago as a normal retirement age. The medical spa and/or anti-aging skin care center concept is here to stay. Costs of expansion are great and require exhaustive architectural and financial planning. There are many details to consider. A very important one is the choice of products and services. Retailing is not to be looked upon lightly since it can bring in 35-45% of total revenue. Product consideration is vital to providing your patients/ customers with good results. Product choice is tantamount to the machines and procedures taken into consideration for skin treatments. Selection of products is at best foreign to those who are delving into a medical esthetics or anti-aging spa venture for the first time. When visiting a potential Environ client, I may discover that there is a plethora of unrelated products on a retail shelf. An over abundance of inventory potentially leads to confusion both to staff and customer as well as revenue loss. Perhaps the products no longer serve your clients needs. Remember, Environ will buy out your inventory of no longer wanted products. Certain conditions apply. Call the office at or your sales rep for details. What is your treatment focus? Some offices offer hair removal and/or IPL only. Certainly it will bring in customers. However, these modalities alone will not address a total system of care and correction that speaks to aging skin, pigmentation, acne, and other skin challenges. Combining numerous modalities IPL, laser, ultrasound, iontophoresis, and targeted corrective facials that includes a scheme of graduated peels with a home regimen of vitamin therapy will produce RESULTS and repeat business. Does your current product line allow flexibility when you re purchasing? Is there a minimum order requirement? Perhaps your current products are not performing as you initially expected. Wouldn t it be great to be able to participate in a buy-back program so that you can begin a better program that gives credit towards your old products? Is your present company focused on building a partnership with you? Does the company provide continuing education? You can have the best products and treatments; however, results ultimately depend on the expertise and precision of the practitioner. Does the company own its own manufacturing? Does it follow guidelines for using the latest scientific research for developing efficacious formulas? Are products obtainable through the Internet? Skin conditions need a thorough analysis by a skin care professional who can prescribe the correct treatment system and companion home care. Self-prescribing through the Internet is not recommended. You ve made a great investment in your business, including product sales. Ms. Zani is the Environ sales representative for North and South Carolina More so, there may be less understanding of how significant the process of combining in-clinic facial treatments for skin rejuvenation and/or pre- and post-surgery needs lead to a total system of care that exudes maximum results and success for your patient/client. Is your choice of products and treatments actually going to serve the needs of your patients/clients? Many product combinations and aggressive treatments may produce more damage to an already compromised skin. A better choice would be to provide gradual correction in order to support the skin s own healing mechanisms. Follow this by a simple home regimen that works in tandem with your clinic treatments. Choose a product line that allows for greater flexibility for moving to higher levels of nutrients and treatments. 5 Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Question & Answer By Dr. Ernst Eiselen, Medical Advisor Q: I am interested in your products but rather nervous about using AHA s that are used in your toning lotion which I presume you use twice a day. During the 1990s there was a lot of scare stories about these ingredients and some say that eventually they will cause more sun damage to the skin. Please, can you tell me a bit more about the AHA s used in the Environ products, where they are derived from, etc? Also, are the vitamins (A, C and E) derived from natural products? A: Thank you for your interesting questions as they raise some pertinent points. You need not be scared of the AHA s. They are present in suitably low dosages and at a friendly ph in the Environ products. They serve as penetrant enhancers for the vitamin enriched Environ products. I would suggest using toners only once per day initially until your skin is well adapted to the vitamin A. Many of the scare-stories pertaining to cosmetic ingredients came from people who either used the acids in high concentrations, or as single ingredients without any added vitamins and anti-oxidants. Some of the bad publicity was just simply hoax-like reports from people who took data out of context. The skin requires treatment with formulations which are well-balanced to contain many different elements at the right concentrations and correct formulations. The phrase natural products is one which appears to have deepened the confusion about ethical and good chemistry. Natural is a word which appears to have taken on the meanings of organic and safe. I suspect that the manufacturers of botanical and other extracts have used this word to denote and foster these concepts in the minds of the buying public. A critical appraisal of the concept unfortunately lays the confusion bare. There can be nothing more natural than a molecule synthesized in a laboratory with the exact structure of the one found in nature. The extract from a plant or chemical source will be termed natural yet could contain unwanted or even potentially harmful substances not removed by the extraction method. In fact some of the most poisonous substances like botulinum toxin, mercury, arsenic and radioactive materials are all perfectly natural. We should therefore be careful to equate the concept of natural with safe and wholesome. Environ uses only the highest quality raw materials available and many of the ingredients are synthetically prepared to be nature identical. This is a much more reliable, precise and ethical concept. It means that the molecules are exact copies of those active ones found in the cells of living human beings. It makes everything a lot more predictable and is safer than any other approach to the preparation of a cosmetic. The absence of surprise ingredients, as will inevitably be found in many extracts, makes the Environ products certainly much safer and in every way more natural. Environ s formulations are based on properly researched scientific data, tested only on human volunteers and are only released to the public once the quality, efficacy and safety can be assured. Please follow the instructions of your skin care professional closely and remember to take the dosage of vitamin A up very slowly over several months. Do not be in a hurry.
