1 Chapter 1: History and Career Opportunities Write out or collect images for a timeline showing the evolution of esthetics to the present day. List ancient skin care practices and their originating civilization. List a popular ingredient used for skin care in Write a one- page report about the career paths and opportunities for estheticians. List different career opportunities for esthetics, select two career paths from your list and research the names of at least two local businesses. Write a paragraph predicting future technology and advancements in skin care and esthetics. Have fun and be creative! Chapter 2: Life Skills Create a learning map with the center focus as your long- term goal. Then, develop how to achieve that goal. What do you need to do? (Include professional image, positive attitude, etc.) Complete the Self- Care Test and assess where you are. What can you improve on? Create a goal sheet to help you take better care of yourself. Be specific and realistic and set a timeline. Invent a challenging workplace scenario and create a solution utilizing any factor that supports professional conduct. Write sentences for each sanitary practice describing how the service or guest experience would be impacted if we failed to acknowledge personal hygiene. Chapter 3: Your Professional Image Create a collage of pictures that represent your professional image. Include a section for what to avoid. Review the guidelines for success in the chapter. Identify what is working and what you can improve. Imagine that you were a manager or owner of a business. Explain how you would coach and educate an employee on improving professional image. Chapter 4: Communicating for Success Review the chapter on communication. Create your own top 10 communication goals based on your strengths and your skills and those areas or skills you need to improve. Define reflective listening and give 3 examples of how this can be utilized. Make a chart of positive and negative nonverbal cues and explain how you will improve in one area. Page 1 of 6
2 Chapter 5: Infection Control: Principles and Practices Create a three- dimensional model of three different kinds of bacteria. List five scenarios of contamination and explain the disinfection rules and safety precautions for sanitation. List the state and federal agencies associated with infection control and give a brief description of their job practices. Create a mind map listing the different types of microorganisms and examples for each. List the levels of Decontamination and give examples of each. Create a protocol of steps to follow in the event a guest is cut during a service. Chapter 6: General Anatomy and Physiology Create a life- size body outline on butcher paper and correctly label at least 50 parts of the body to include the following systems: skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, lymphatic/immune, endocrine, digestive, respiratory, integumentary, and reproductive systems. Draw list and define the different types of tissue. Chapter 7: Basics of Chemistry Make a ph scale and identify the ph of at least 10 items at your home or school. Using supplies from home, create or draw a model of a compound molecule. Then describe how this compound would result in a redox reaction. Chapter 8: Basics of Electricity Draw and diagram a complete electrical circuit using the electrical terms in the chapter. List examples of conductors and insulators. Research the milliampere, ohm, watt and kilowatt of any styling tool. How does each affect the performance of the tool? List the different type of Electrotherapy modalities you work with and the type of current it uses. Page 2 of 6
3 Chapter 9: Basics of Nutrition Track your food and drink intake for two days. Based on the food pyramid and national recommendations, what can you improve and what steps will you take to make the changes? Draw a food pyramid and list your favorite types of food for each food classification. Create a list of Values vs. Behaviors with health being the focus. Chapter 10: Physiology and Histology of the Skin Create a three- dimensional model of the layers of the skin. Write a one- page report on skin health, including sun damage and how mature skin and hormones affect the health of the skin. Mind map the Skin Functions. Illustrate and describe the difference between the sebaceous and sudoriferous glands. Diagram the UV Radiation and the distance they affect the layers of the skin. Write the skin conditions this damage will result in. List the external and internal factors that may promote premature again. Chapter 11: Disorders and Diseases of the Skin Write a one- page report on skin disorders and diseases, including any steps you can take as an esthetician and which conditions require medical attention. Select at least 3 skin diseases or disorders and define the following: Name, symptoms, treatment, contraindications. Find images or illustrate each primary lesion. Write a one page report on the types of skin cancer and detection of melanoma. Illustrate the formation of acne and list the different causes and triggers. Chapter 12: Skin Analysis Using pictures from magazines, create your own Fitzpatrick scale. Include the skin type, appearance, and reaction to sun exposure. Create flash cards based on the table of skin conditions and descriptions. Write a one- page report on factors that affect the skin. Make a chart listing skin types vs. conditions. For each skin type, list possible conditions your may observe. Write a paragraph explaining the benefits of preforming a thorough skin analysis. Write the steps to conducting a skin analysis during a skin treatment. Page 3 of 6
4 Chapter 13: Skin Care Products: Chemistry, Ingredients, and Selection For each skin type, list the ingredients each would benefit from. List the different types of hydroxyl acids and the skin type it would best compliment. This of the skin care line your use, find examples of each type of delivery system. List different skin care products and name the antioxidant it contains. Explain the difference between chemical and physical sunscreen. Explain the meaning of FDA and list all the references pertaining to skin care and the FDA listed in the chapter. Chapter 14: The Treatment Room Create a learning map on the furniture and equipment needed for a treatment room. Draw your own treatment room. Include the floor plan, products, and décor. Write a one- page report on the set- up and cleanup of the treatment room. Pretend you are a manager of a spa. Write a protocol explaining the disinfecting procedures for the treatment room and supplies. Create a log and describe the inspection process. Chapter 15: Facial Treatments Create a windowpane of the facial procedures. Include the supplies and equipment needed. Write a one- page report on the different skin types and what is treatable as an esthetician and which conditions require medical attention. Write a one- page report on extractions. Include how to prepare the skin and how to perform extractions on the different areas of the face. Explain how you would address a guest who had a contraindication to a facial. For each skin type, write the possible treatment options and home care instructions. Describe how a men s facial is different than a woman s facial. Chapter 16: Facial Massage Write a one- page report on the different types of massage manipulations and on which area of the body they are used. Using a head sheet, draw the facial massage manipulations procedures. Using a head sheet, diagram and label the muscles of the face. Write a script explaining to a guest the benefits of massage. List the contraindications to massage and the reason they are contraindicated. Mind map alternative massage techniques and the benefits of each. Page 4 of 6
5 Chapter 17: Facial Machines Write a one- page report on facial equipment to include several facial machines, their uses, and results. Choose your favorite facial machine and create a dialog to market the skin service explaining how it will enhance the treatment results! Chapter 18: Hair Removal Create a three- dimensional model of the structure of the hair and skin. Create a learning map of the contraindications for hair removal. Write a one- page report on the different methods for permanent and temporary hair removal. Create a brief protocol listing the steps to tweezing eyebrows. Chapter 19: Advanced Topics and Treatments Create a model of wavelengths used in light therapy. Write a one- page report on the different advanced treatments, what type of skin they are used for, and their benefits. List the different types of body treatments and research a spa near you where these services are offered. Chapter 20: The World of Makeup Complete a service area set- up for makeup based on the recommendations from the chapter. Create a color wheel. Design a makeover on a face chart for corrective makeup for either a round or triangular face shape. Design a makeover on a face chart for special occasion makeup to include, eyes, lips, and cheeks. Write the dialogue you would use for a makeup consultation. List questions and answers as if you were performing a consultation on a guest. Using magazine cut outs, find examples of the color temperatures. Using magazines, find at least 3 different types of eye shapes. Measure the facial features of any model in a magazine. Explain the proportions. Write a dialogue recommending a cosmetic item to a guest after a skin or makeup service. Page 5 of 6
6 Chapter 21: Career Planning Create a dos and don ts list for preparing and taking the written exam. Complete the Personal Inventory of Characteristics and Skills and create a game plan for your personal improvement. Create a list of questions to ask during a job interview. Include questions that may and may not be asked in the interview. Write a one- page report on the differences between commission and booth- rent salons, including the pros and cons of each. Complete the Personal Budget Worksheet and carefully plan the steps you must take to meet your responsibilities. Chapter 22: The Skin Care Business Write a business plan as if you were the owner or manager of a salon or spa. Include the salon or spa floor plan, product, and location. Note: The business plan must be a minimum of two pages. Describe how profit is affected with each business ownership option. Interview a service desk coordinator and their role and responsibilities. Chapter 23: Selling Products and Services Write a one- page report on selling in the skin care salon. Include how you will incorporate these practices and how it will help increase your business as an esthetician. Create dialogue scripts for maintaining your current service guests and expanding your clientele base. Create a marketing plan for promoting a service and skin care.
