U S E A N D C A R E G U I D E A N D W A R R A N T Y USE AND CARE GUIDELINES Formica Brand Laminate, ColorCore surfacing material, and DecoMetal laminates and solid metals are designed for beauty and durability. Like any surfacing materials, however, they can be damaged by abuse and carelessness. When used as recommended with proper use and care, the end result isyears of satisfaction. PROTECTING THE SURFACE Before selecting the surface material, consider the type of use it will receive, as well as its texture, color, and reflective values. A rough-textured surface has different advantages, depending upon use, than a smooth-textured surface. High gloss finish laminates and DecoMetal laminates and solid metal items, for example, are not recommended for use in heavy-duty applications such as countertops. Dark colors tend to enhance scratches, marring and fingerprints. Scratch and Impact Protection. Formica Brand Laminates and ColorCore surfacing material are resistant to scratches and impacts under normal use conditions. Use cutting boards, chopping blocks, or other protective surfaces. Do not chop, slice, pound, or hammer on any laminate surface. Knives or other sharp utensils may slice or scratch the surface. Heavy blows from a hammer or meat tenderizer may crack or gouge the surface. Use place mats, doilies, and trivets on laminate surfaces when necessary. Ceramics and abrasive objects can cause scratching and premature wear do not slide these items across surface. Follow recommendations for cleaning do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, sandpaper, or Scotch-Brite scouring pads (see Cleaning section inside). Hot Objects. Cookware still hot from the stove, oven or microwave, as well as electric skillets, waffle irons, curling irons and hot rollers, should not be placed directly on laminate surfaces. Prolonged exposure to temperatures of 140 F (60 C) or higher may cause the laminate to separate from the core material. Use a trivet, insulated hot pad or other protective device beneath all hot cookware, heat generating appliances, or other heated objects. Formica Brand Laminate and ColorCore surfacing material can withstand heat up to 275 F (135 C) for short periods of time. Never expose DecoMetal laminates and solid metal items to heat exceeding 140 F (60 C). Avoid ironing or placing a hot iron on laminate surfaces. Do not place lighted cigarettes directly on laminate surfaces. ORDINARY CLEANING Formica Brand Laminate, ColorCore surfacing material, and DecoMetal laminates and solid metal items are very easy to clean. In most cases, you only need to use a clean, damp, non-abrasive cotton cloth and a mild liquid detergent or household cleaner. Rinse with clean water, using a clean, non-abrasive cotton cloth. Do not flood the laminate, especially near seams, since water can penetrate and cause the substrate to swell. Dry the surface with a soft, clean, non-abrasive cotton cloth. For specific types of surfaces, use the following care guidelines. Matte and Sparkle Finish Laminates. Especially hardto-clean areas may require special attention. Use a nylonbristled hand or vegetable brush, along with a mild liquid detergent-and-water solution or household cleaner. Clean the soiled area, using a rotating motion. Rinse and dry the surface as indicated above. Sculptures and Dimensional Finish Laminates. These surfaces may require special attention to clean the depressed areas. Use a nylon-bristled hand or vegetable brush, along with a mild liquid detergent-and-water solution or household cleaner. Clean the soiled area, using a rotating motion. Rinse and dry the surface as indicated above.
High Gloss Finish Laminates. If residual streaks and smears remain after normal cleaning, use a mild glass cleaner and then dry with a clean, non-abrasive cotton cloth. Avoid exterior glass cleaner. DecoMetal laminates and solid metals. Clean these items with a soft, clean, damp, non-abrasive cotton cloth and a mild liquid detergent. Do not use solvents or waxes on DecoMetal laminates and solid metal surfaces. Mild glass cleaners may be used to remove streaks. Chemical Damage Never use cleaners containing acid, alkali, or sodium hypochlorite. These cleaners will mar, etch, corrode, and permanently discolor the laminate surface. Also, make sure that bottles, rags, and other materials contaminated with these cleaners never contact the laminate surface. Examples of cleaners containing acid, alkali, or sodium hypochlorite include, but are not limited to: drain cleaners rust removers coffeepot cleaners metal cleaners tub and tile cleaners chlorine bleach oven cleaners toilet bowl cleaners lime scale removers ceramic cooktop some countertop (high alkali) cleaners cleaners disinfectants SPECIAL CLEANING RECOMMENDATIONS Residual Glue. Sometimes new decorative laminate has a streaky appearance caused by contact adhesive used during fabrication. Clean with a non-abrasive cotton cloth and an adhesive solvent such as Formica Brand Non-flammable Contact Adhesive Solvent. Use solvent sparingly, as excessive amounts may delaminate edges. Read and follow all warnings and instructions on the labels of all solvent products. Use only hexane or heptane on DecoMetal laminates and solid metal items. may be harmful to the laminate surface. Formica Corporation cannot be held responsible for these changes. Solvents such as denatured alcohol can also be used. Follow all directions and warnings on the solvent label because many are extremely flammable. Stubborn or fugitive stains that may disappear on their own, after a short time or after repeated cleanings, include: food stains glass rings food dyes water marks coffee and tea stains fingerprints Stains which are stubborn or even permanent, and may not disappear, include: wood stains cash register inks indelible inks newsprint marking pen inks food pricing ink label inks lemon juice Some materials and liquids, such as dyes and pharmaceutical products, will permanently stain laminate. Examples include: hair dyes and rinses silver nitrate laundry bluing tannic acid Mercurochrome povidone-iodine dermatological peroxide Red-2B dye tar compounds These stains may be reduced by applying a paste of baking soda and water on the area to pull out the stain. The paste will be slightly abrasive, so do not rub. wipe up the paste with a clean, damp, non-abrasive cotton cloth, and then rinse clean with water. Periodic application of a self-cleaning wax can help minimize future staining. Paint and Varnish. Remove most oil-base paints, varnishes and lacquers from decorative laminate surfaces with a suitable solvent. Read and follow all warnings and instructions on the labels of all solvent products, and remember that most solvents are extremely flammable. Use solvent sparingly, as excessive amounts may delaminate edges. Remove most water-based paints with an ammoniated household cleaner. For stubborn paint spots, gently use a plastic, non-metallic, non-abrasive pad. Never use steel wool or other abrasive scouring pads. Stains. To remove or minimize stains, use full strength Fantastik All Purpose Cleaner, Formula 409, Pine-Sol or other mild household cleaner on the affected area, and allow it to draw out the stain. Blot with a clean, damp, nonabrasive cotton cloth, and then rinse with clean water. When a recommended cleaner changes its formulation, the change
Care and Maintenance Pionite decorative laminate provides a durable surface that is easy to maintain using ordinary care. To maintain the laminate s lasting beauty, cleaning with a solution of warm water and liquid dishwashing detergent is all that should be required in most cases. Stains may be removed with most non-abrasive household cleaners such as FORMULA 409, FANTASTIK, GLASS PLUS, or WINDEX WITH AMMONIA D. Light scrubbing with a soft bristled brush may be necessary to remove stains from the depth of the structure on some textured surfaces. If the stain persists, use a paste of baking soda and water and apply with a soft bristled brush. Light scrubbing for strokes should remove most stains. Although baking soda is a low abrasive, excessive scrubbing or exerting too much force may damage the decorative surface, especially if it has a gloss finish. Stubborn stains that resist any of the above cleaning methods may require the use of undiluted household bleach. Apply the bleach to the stain and let stand no longer than 1 1/2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and wipe dry. This step may be repeated if the stain appears to be going away and the color of the laminate has not been affected. WARNING: Prolonged exposure of the laminate surface to bleach will cause discoloration. Many commercially available products contain substances that may damage or discolor a laminate surface. ABRASIVE CLEANERS SHOULD NOT BE USED. Particular care should be used with any products labeled CAUTION or WARNING. Any questions or concerns should be referred to the product s manufacturer or call PIONITE. Do not allow harsh materials to remain in contact with the laminate surface. Examples of these areas follows: Toilet bowl cleaners Hydrogen Peroxide Oven cleaners Drain cleaners Metal cleaners and polishes Chlorine bleach Coffee pot cleaners Hard water stain removers Fruit and berry juice Tub and tile cleaners

CARE & MAINTENANCE CLEANING KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS and other Staron surfaces Staron and Tempest surfaces are durable and, in many cases, can be repaired or refurbished. With simple care and maintenance, a kitchen or bath area, as well has high-use commercial applications, will last for many years. Follow these instructions to preserve your Staron and Tempest solid surface products. 1. Everyday Care General cleaning of your Staron and Tempest solid surfaces can be done by wiping the surface with a damp cloth or sponge, then dry with soft cloth or paper towels to prevent spotting; especially in areas with hard water. 2. Basic Stains Clean with an ammonia-based product such as household glass cleaner or commercially available non-abrasive spray-on cleaners for solid surface products. Wipe dry with a soft cloth or paper towels to prevent spotting. 3. Stubborn Stains and Minor Scratches There are over 70 colors available in Staron and Tempest products and each color can be supplied with a different type of finish by a Staron certified fabricator/installer. Dark colors in countertop surfaces and particularly dark colors that have been finished to a gloss, like anything else, will potentially show signs of use, such as scratches and soap residue, more readily than light colored solid surface materials. Therefore, a gloss finish generally requires additional maintenance and care to retain its original luster. Different cleaning techniques are required to remove stubborn stains and minor scratches depending on the type of finish and color as detailed in the following instructions (Note: please contact your certified fabricator/installer if you are uncertain which type of finish is applied to your Staron solid surfaces). DO NOT attempt to repair deep scratches, chips or burns, contact a certified Staron fabricator/installer Samsung Chemical USA. Copyright c Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.
CARE & MAINTENANCE CLEANING KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS and other Staron surfaces MATTE FINISH is the standard finish delivered by your certified fabricator/installer. It is a low or no-sheen finish and is recommended in all high-use areas. Scrub in a small circular motion with a wet sponge and an abrasive cleanser such as Soft Scrub. Darker colors tend to require more attention than lighter colors. SATIN FINISH has a slightly higher sheen than Matte and requires more attention depending on frequency of use and area of application. Lightly scrub surface in a small circular motion with a wet sponge and an abrasive cleanser such as Soft Scrub over stain or scratch. Darker Color Darker colors tend to require more attention than lighter colors. Scrubbing too aggressively may actually reduce the gloss level. GLOSS FINISH is a higher and reflective sheen that requires additional care and maintenance. It is important to note that a Gloss finish, especially on a dark color, will require more care than a Matte/Satin finish. Therefore, be sure not to apply the same method or process recommended for a Matte/Satin finish when caring for a Gloss finish. Repeat the procedure shown below If stain persists, contact your certified fabricator/installer for assistance. DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANSERS AND PADS OF ANY TYPE ON A GLOSS FINISH; PLEASE CONTACT YOUR STARON RETAILER/DEALER FOR MORE INFORMATION. Spray a non-abrasive product such as Formula 409 over stain and wait for a couple of minutes. Then, scrub in a small circular motion with a wet sponge. Darker Color Darker colors tend to require more attention than lighter colors. Scrubbing too aggressively may actually reduce the gloss level. Do not use abrasive cleansers, pads or steel wool After completing the above procedure, rinse with clear water and wipe dry with a soft cloth or paper towels to prevent spotting. To enhance the visual color clarity and hide minor scuffs, apply Countertop Magic cleanser (available at any hardware store or supermarket) and wipe away excess with a soft cloth. 9 CARE & MAINTENANCE CLEANING KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS and other Staron surfaces 4. Preventing Damage Minor damage that may accidentally occur is most often repairable by a Staron certificated fabricator/installer or repair expert. However, be sure to follow these guidelines to prevent damage to your Staron and Tempest surface: HEAT: Staron and Tempest Solid Surfaces have excellent heat resistant properties compared to other countertop materials. However, placing hot pans, as well as some heatgenerating appliances such as electric grills or deep-fryers, can damage the surface. Always use a hot pad or a trivet with rubber feet to protect Staron and Tempest. Avoid subjecting Staron and Tempest Solid Surfaces to extreme hot temperatures. CHEMICALS: Avoid exposing Staron and Tempest Solid Surfaces to strong chemicals such as paint removers, acetone, and oven cleaners. Surfaces exposed to these chemicals should be promptly flushed with water; contact may cause spots that may require extensive repairs. Remove nail polish with a non-acetone-based nail polish remover and flush with water. SCRATCHES: Never cut or chop directly on a Staron and Tempest Solid Surfaces surface, always use a cutting/chopping board. FRACTURES: Avoid standing on countertops or dropping heavy objects on the surface. NOTE: Gloss reduction, scratching, and staining on solid surfaces incurred over time due to use is NOT a manufacturing defect but is considered normal wear and tear The forgoing is NOT covered under the Staron Limited Warranty. However, the countertop can be re-sanded and refinished periodically if you so choose -- You will be charged the standard hourly service rate. If your Staron and Tempest product is accidentally nicked or deeply scratched, please contact your retailer/dealer or Staron certified fabricator/installer for advice about the most effective method of repair most repairs are relatively quick and simple when performed by an experienced professional (service charge may apply). 10 CARE & MAINTENANCE CLEANING SINKS & BOWLS Staron sinks and bowls are highly resistant to staining by common household foods, liquids, and cosmetics. However, leaving food residue and chemicals on the surface to air dry can result in a stubborn stain unless rinsed immediately with water. 1. Everyday Care and Basic Stains Clean regularly with Soft Scrub or a mild detergent such as those used for hand dishwashing. 2. Stubborn Stains and Minor Scratches Apply a mild abrasives cleanser such as Bon-ami, Comet or Soft Scrub on the area and buff in a circular motion with a green Scotch-Brite pad. Buff over the entire sink to blend the finish and then rinse solid color of Staron product is evident all the way through the same. 3. Disinfecting To keep sinks bright and clean, occasionally apply liquid bleach and water using the following steps. - Fill sink 1/4 full with water and add 1 to 2 cups of bleach. - Carefully (without splashing) scrub the entire surface with a green Scotch-Brite pad and sponge. - Allow to stand for 15 minutes. Then, drain and rinse. 4. Preventing Damage Staron sinks and bowls are highly durable. However, be sure to follow these guidelines: Allow heated cookware to cool before placing in sink Always run cold water when pouring boiled water or hot liquids into sink Do not expose the surface to harsh chemicals, such as paint remover, turpentine, nail polish remover (acetone) or drain, stove and toilet cleaning products. If the chemicals come in contact with the surface, immediately wash them off with water, using appropriate safety measures to avoid injury. Avoid dropping heavy objects on the surface For more detailed information, please contact your Staron dealer or visit us at Use of certain names is intended only to show a type of cleaning product.
