OUTCOMES TO BE ASSESSED: Applies design processes that respond to needs and opportunities in each design project Generates and communicates creative design ideas and solutions Applies a broad range of contemporary and appropriate tools, materials and techniques with competence in the development of design projects DIRECTIONAL VERBS: Applies: use, utilise, employ in a particular situation Communicates: share or exchange information Generate: produce or create TASK DESCRIPTION: This is an in class task with two parts. Each student will complete a design folio and make the products. Students will sew their monster toy and bunting flags in class using school supplied materials. Students are required to apply the design process, using the design folio in their class booklet, as they apply a range of tools, materials, techniques to make a unique monster toy and set of bunting flags. They will generate four coloured sketches of their ideas for their monster toy, three coloured sketches of their bunting flags and communicate their final ideas through detailed sketches. Students must also present and apply their research on different types of toys and fabrics suitable for their monster toy and bunting flags. Finally, students will select, present and apply hand embroidery stitches they have experimented with. The design situation for the project is: The mass production of toys and interior décor items and their wide availability has created a demand for unique soft toys and fabric décor items for children. One off, hand crafted designs are hugely popular and continue to appeal to parents and children alike. Soft toys and bedroom decorations are suitable for children of many ages and can become a big part of their childhood memories.
2 The design brief for the project is: You are an interior designer. You have been employed by a client to create two pieces for their child s new bedroom. The first is a monster soft toy. The second is a set of 0 bunting flags. Each item must reflect the style and colours of the child s new bedroom. The monster soft toy will be made using felt fabric and will feature applique and hand embroidery. The bunting flags will feature applique of a name, shapes, words or numbers. You will also use hand embroidery to decorate the bunting flags. PART A: Design Folio (5 marks) Students are required to apply the design process as they complete all of the activities in the design folio section of your booklet. These activities are:. Design situation ACTIVITY: Discuss the design situation as a class, record the design criteria and considerations/limitations of the design project ( mark). Design brief ACTIVITY: Discuss the design brief as a class, record the design criteria and considerations/limitations of the design project ( mark). Investigation and research ACTIVITY: Investigate three toy types and applies information on each of them to their design process ( marks) ACTIVITY: Investigate acrylic felt fabric and applies information on each of them to their design process ( marks) ACTIVITY: Investigate possible fabrics for bunting flags and applies information to their design process ( marks) 4. Possible solutions/developing ideas ACTIVITY: Generate four, full colour, creative drawings for your monster toy including labels of design features (4 marks) ACTIVITY: Generate three, full colour, creative drawings for your bunting flags including labels of design features ( marks) 5. Selecting the best idea ACTIVITY: Communicate your best idea for a monster toy, draw it in full colour with front and back views and labels. 3 6. Testing and experimentation ACTIVITY: Apply knowledge and skills of running, chain and blanket hand embroidery stitches on felt fabric ( marks) 7. Production ACTIVITY: Apply your knowledge of the order of construction you followed to make your monster toy by recording it accurately in your design folio ( marks) ACTIVITY: Apply your knowledge of the order of construction you followed to make your bunting flags by recording it accurately in your design folio ( marks) 8. Final evaluation ACTIVITY: After you have constructed your monster toy and bunting flags you must apply evaluation techniques by responding to the questions about the success of your monster toy and bunting flags and improvements that can be made (5 marks) PART B: Monster toy (0 marks) Applying a range of textiles specific tools, felt fabric and hand embroidery stitches you will make the monster toy you have designed. You must: Follow the final design drawn in your design folio Use felt fabric in the construction of your monster toy Use running stitch, blanket stitch and chain stitch in the construction of your monster toy Use applique to create the design features on your monster toy Use scissors, hand sewing needles, thread and pins in the construction of your monster toy PART B: Bunting flags (0 marks) Applying a range of textiles specific tools, felt fabric and hand embroidery stitches you will make the bunting flags you have designed. You must: Follow the final design drawn in your design folio Use cotton fabric in the construction of your bunting flags and felt fabric for the applique letters and shapes Use running stitch, blanket stitch and chain stitch in the construction of your bunting flags Use applique to create the design features on your bunting flags Use scissors, hand sewing needles, thread and pins in the construction of your bunting flags
4 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA: You will be assessed on your ability to: Use the design process that you have studied in class when developing your monster toy and bunting flag designs and constructing the final products Sketch, colour and label four monster toy ideas with front and back views Sketch, label and colour three bunting flag ideas Use the information you have learned in the investigation and research activities to make informed choices for your monster toy and bunting flag designs Use the results of your testing and experimentation activities to make informed choices for your monster toy and bunting flag final products Demonstrate your skills when using textiles tools such as scissors, pins, needles and an iron Demonstrate your skills in hand stitching as you use running stitch, chain stitch and blanket stitch in your experimentation samples, monster toy and bunting flags
