5 Common Chemicals Found In Standard Skincare Propylene Glycol (PG) (also Butylene or Ethylene Glycol or similar compounds with glycol in the name) Found in antifreeze and automotive brake fluid. Most common ingredient in skincare. Widely used in personal care products as a moisture carrying ingredient. PG can strip the skin s natural barrier and easily and quickly penetrate the skin. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns employees working with PG to avoid skin and eye contact by wearing gloves, protective clothing and goggles. 1 Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) (or similar compounds with the word lauryl or lauro in the name) Harsh detergent found in car washes, engine degreasers, and garage floor cleansers. Used in over 90% of personal care products for its foaming action. It can cause skin rashes, eye irritations, and allergic reactions. SLS can break down the skin s moisture barrier and easily penetrate the skin allowing other chemicals to more easily penetrate the skin. The American Journal of Toxicology states that SLS stays in the body up to 5 days. Frequently Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is marketed in pseudo-natural personal care products as comes from coconut. FD&C Color Pigments / Artificial or Synthetic Colors / Dyes Synthetic colors made from coal tar to make personal care products look pretty. Will be labeled FD&C or D&C, and then followed by a color and a number. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (monoethanolamine), TEA (triethanolamine) Used as an emulsifier or foaming agent, these chemicals can cause allergic reactions, dry skin and hair, and irritate the eyes. Petro chemicals, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Paraffin, Waxes Derived from petroleum or coal and is a defoaming agent. Coats the skin like plastic and can interfere with the body s natural moisturizing mechanism. Clogs pores and decreases the skin s ability to eliminate toxins. Therefore toxins can accumulate and acne and other disorders can result. Can cause cellular development to slow down resulting in pre-mature aging. Dimethicone, Simethicone, Cyclomethicone (or similar compounds ending in cone ) Common in skincare, especially higher-end skincare. Falsifies moisture but is only a silicon layer. Page 1

6 DMDM (Hydantoin) and Urea (Imidazolidinyl) Diazolidinyl Urea Common preservatives that release formaldehyde. Can cause skin irritation (American Academy of Dermatology) as well as irritation to the respiratory system. May also cause skin allergies, headache, and dizziness. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) list the toxicology as harmful by inhalation, ingestion and through skin absorption. Urea is animal urine. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Used in spray-on oven cleaners, these synthetic compounds are found in many personal care products as a binder or a solvent and may cause allergic reactions. May alter the skin s moisture barrier, therefore leaving you more vulnerable to bacteria. Fragrance Synthetic fragrances may have up to 200 ingredients that don t have to be labeled. Symptoms reported include headache, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, coughing, vomiting and skin irritation. Isopropyl Alcohol (SD-40), Ethanol, Ethyl Alcohol (or similar compounds with ethanol in the name) A very drying and irritating solvent derived from petroleum. Can strip your skin s natural immune barrier and accelerate the penetration of other chemicals into the skin. Also promotes pre-mature aging of skin. May cause headache, flushing, and dizziness. Triclosan A strong antibacterial preservative; used in many personal care products. Used to keep us safe from infection, but according to microbiologist Laura McMurray and others at the Tufts University School of Medicine, triclosan is capable of forcing the emergence of superbugs that it cannot kill. 2 Parabens Parabens namely methyl, propyl, ethyl and butylparabens are a class of chemical preservatives widely used in personal care products including skincare, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes. These compounds have a high incidence of skin irritation especially when applied to broken or damaged skin. In 2005, a study reported that parabens were found in breast cancer tumors. While this study did not conclude that parabens caused the cancer/tumors, the study raised enough questions to call for the need for further research. Since breast cancer is a high concern for women and since many women use underarm deodorants from a very young age, this has lead to concern about the safety of this ingredient. It has not been banned from use since the evidence is not conclusive. References 1.
