CONTENT Introduction How do they find the time to make it perfect every day? Personality Lifestyle Hair Texture Skill Objectives
Introduction You know you ve hit that snooze button on your phone far too many times to complete your morning routine. Too late for your hair, you re walking into work knowing you hair is a mess. Once you re at work, you begin to notice that everyone else seems to have immaculate hair.
How do they find the time to make it perfect every day? By choosing a hair cut that compliments their face and fits their lifestyle. Making their morning...virtually effortless. The secret to saving time is a lot easier than you think. After studying hair for a decade, getting the your perfect hair cut is all about knowing what tools you need to succeed and being able to communicate your needs to your stylist. Hair is technical and creative, with many elements coming together to make your experience. It s a blend of personality, lifestyle, and your personal hair texture and objectives.
Determining Your Face Shape Before helping you decide the perfect hairstyle, it s important to know what you re working with. The million dollar question always seems to be: What kind of hairstyle will be flattering for my face shape? There are 9 basic head shapes that everyone fits in to. Though confidence is the best hairstyle you can wear with your face shape, there are styles that typically look better on certain face shapes than others. At the end of the day, if you STRUT YOUR STYLE WITH CONFIDENCE all the rules get thrown out the window. You re probably still curious though so we will fill you in on the general guidelines. We really encourage you to take these guidelines with a grain of salt. Hairstyles will always look great if they were cut properly, styled properly and worn properly (aka confidence).

Rectangular face: SHAPES Oval face: The length of the face is equal to one and a half times the width. Oblong face: The face is slightly longer than it is wide Heart face: The face has a wider forehead and cheekbones. It will also have a narrow jawline and maybe even pointy chin. The hairline has a widow s peak giving the face that heart shape appearance. Here are the definitions of each face shape The face is longer than it is wide with a prominent jaw and forehead. Square face: The face is equally as long as it is wide with a prominent jaw and forehead. Triangular face: The face has a narrower forehead and a prominent jaw and cheekbones. Diamond face: The face has a narrow jawline and a narrow forehead. The widest part is at the cheekbones. Round face: The face is as wide as it is long Inverted triangle face: The face has a forehead and cheekbones that are prominent and the jawline is narrow. It may even have a pointy chin.
123 hair is ideal. Here are the general guidelines: -O val is the ideal face shape and less than 2% of the world s population has this face shape. Oval face shapes can really wear any length of hair. You want to avoid overly long lengths with the oblong face shape. The length can pull down the face making it look longer. -W ith round face shapes you want to avoid overly short lengths and blunt cuts. Having length is nice so that it can elongate and narrow out the face. Also hairstyles that add height to the crown are nice. If you want bangs, feather them to soften them rather than having thick, heavy bangs. -R ectangular face shapes are similar to the oblong face shapes in that they are longer. With this face shape, you would also want to avoid excessive long hair because the length will draw you down. Mid-length -S quare face shapes do well with long layers and A-line bobs. These types of lines help to soften the strong jaw line that is associated with this face shape. Blunt cuts below the shoulders are nice too and hairstyles that add height to the crown. Avoid shorter cuts that will make the face look squarer in shape. -T riangular face shapes work well with graduated bobs. Graduated bobs are known for the body and volume that they give. This will help to fill in the narrower forehead. Shorter layers are great too. Shorter layers don t give volume but it will help you to get more volume when you are styling your hair. -D iamond face shapes work well with many hairstyles. Styles that can be styled with lots of body are nice because the extra volume helps to fill in the narrow forehead and jawline. Cuts that are about chin length and shoulder length are absolutely stunning. Blunt cuts also look great. -I nverted triangle face shapes work well with hair styles that are fuller in the nape area. This will help to fill in the narrow jawline giving the appearance of a more balanced head shape. Also pixie cuts and shoulder length hair is nice. Avoid long styles that don t frame the face and that accentuate the thinner chin. -H eart face shapes are similar to the inverted triangle face shapes. Heart face shapes work well with hairstyles that are fuller in the nape area to fill in the narrow jawline. Also pixie cuts and shoulder length hair is nice. Avoid long styles that don t frame the face and that accentuate the thinner chin. Extra Style Tips Choose layer lengths to start at a feature you want to accentuate. I.E) If you love your cheek bones, start your layering at your cheek bones. Take your hair growth patterns into consideration before choosing a style. If you re unsure as to what you have, ask your stylist. Remember, those are just guidelines! Rock whatever style you want that you will feel good in.
Personality I t s no secret that many consider their hair to be a direct reflection of who they are as a person. A great stylist realizes that a haircut isn t awesome unless the person wearing it is happy. If you re not comfortable wearing it or styling it, the haircut probably isn t for you. That doesn t mean you shouldn t try anything new, it just means that knowing how to communicate who you are to your stylist can help guarantee you get exactly what you want. For instance, when a client tells me she is spunky, out-going, and enjoys standing out in the crowd I m immediately aware that conventional styles are not her cup of tea. With those traits, she may want to lean more towards a textured pixie cut or simply something that steps out of the traditional cut and showcases her fun personality.
Lifestyle Lifestyle has everything to do with finding the perfect haircut. Your lifestyle breaks down into your occupation, your daily activities, your hobbies and ultimately... time. No matter how tempting it is to bring an elaborate hairstyle to your stylist, ask yourself: Do I really have the time to style this every day?
Consider the following Does work put constraints on how you can style your hair? Nurses and medical professionals are often looking for something that can easily pull back and be out of their faces. Do you have children? In that case, you may want to consider how much time you can spend on your hair with children to attend to in the mornings. Bangs may not be the best decision in that case. Are you outdoorsy?
If you re more concerned about how often you ll need to visit the salon, keep the length factor in my mind. Here a quick guide to lengths Shorter styles save a lot of time, but take more salon visits to maintain. On average, you will revisit the salon every 4-6 weeks. Longer styles will last 6-12 weeks, but take a lot more time in the morning.
Hair Texture Let s get technical. Knowing your hair texture and styling accordingly is important for getting the perfect hairstyle. One that looks looks beautiful and takes virtually no effort.
Do you know what the different types of texture are? Do you know which one you have? Your genetic makeup usually plays the biggest part in what type of texture your hair is. Generally speaking, there are 3 types of hair you can be categorized into: fine, medium, and coarse. Texture The texture of hair is determined by how wide the hair is and how the cuticle sits in your scalp. Think of your hair cuticles as shingles on a rood, they are designed to protect your hair like a barrier. Fine hair has a small width and close cuticle, where coarse hair has a much larger width and the cuticle will be more open. The texture determines the styling you re able to achieve. If your hair is naturally fine, going for a look with a lot of body and volume isn t ideal. It will take a lot of time and effort to accomplish in the mornings. (Think back to the amount of time you have to do your hair) Density Density relates to the amount of hairs on your head. Remember, you can have fine hair and high density. It varies quite a bit through all textures. However, density plays a big roll in the styles you can achieve. With a high hair density, you can achieve a lot of different hairstyle. Even if it you have too much hair, the hair can be thin to your needs. Low density hair is a bit of a limitation, as you cannot force the hair volumes to your needs. The main thing is understand where you fall in the texture / density category. I won t go much further in depth on this matter as it gets much more technical on how to choose the best fit and that is information a trained stylist SHOULD have. Consult with a professional that also understands how to properly cut and style your hair appropriately.
Skill Not everyone is a natural when it comes to hair and beauty. In fact, I was one of the people who felt absolutely lost when it came to hair. Luckily, skill is like everything else- it can be learned.
Your skill level will ultimately determine the success of the hair you want to have. Often times, we take the plunge into a style without the knowledge we need to maintain it. Think about: How many times have you loved your new do until you washed it? Are you willing to do all those steps every day? Do you know how to preform the necessary steps? (Need a little education? Visit our blog here: ) Before cutting your hair, ask your stylist what it will take to achieve the look you want with your hair type. Tell them you want the step by step, so you accurately determine whether or not you have time for the style. Practice makes perfect. If you want to rock a crazy do, then take the time to learn how to style it. The more you do it, the easier it will become. Make sure you give yourself the tools you need for success. Buy the right product based on your hair type and styling goals, and make sure you have the styling tools to do it. More About Products You can also go further in this to choose on ingredient list and company values alignment, which just means you stand behind a company because you believe in what your buying. Is there a difference between products? YES! 100% YES! Every single product is different some are heavier, have more hold, perform better, finish shiny or matte, feel invisible in the hair, and much more. Ultimately, I choose a product based on how it leaves my hair feeling. I want the product in my hair to do its job but I do not want to feel it in my hair. No one wants to run their hands through a gunky mess. Next, I look at how well it performs. If I want the product to smooth my hair I want to see a noticeable difference in how smooth my hair got. Get proper recommendations from your stylist according to those factors texture, density, and styling goals. To take it one step further, look for testimonials. Lastly, ingredients and value alignment. I want to use a product that is safe for my health and the environment. Many ingredients have been surfacing as ingredients you want to stay away from parabans, sulphates, formaldehydes...to name a few. I like to be as natural as I can get WITHOUT sacrificing performance. Also, I will make sure to only use companies that do not harm our environment and animal life. As a dog lover, I will not use anything that harms animals or our environment.
Objectives What do you want to attain from your style? What are the short and long term goals? Your objectives are a combination of the previous categories. Decide how you want to present yourself to the world: Are you a romantic? A business woman? Care free? Really think about what s important to you. The best part about hair? It makes major milestones. Starting a family, a new career, or simply a declaration of independence into a new lifestyle. Your hair is so symbolic of your lifestyle and where you re going in life. Often times, I can tell a lot about someone simply from their haircut.
