2 Skin Whitening and Brightening Skin colour, which is dependent on the type and amount of Melanin present along with the number of active Melanocytes, is an important attribute of beauty. Asian cultures associate lighter and even complexion with higher social status compared to Western cultures, for whom a tanned complexion is associated with a healthy glow. Demand for skin lightening products that achieve a fairer and lighter complexion is on the increase, but they are also an excellent tool to fight agerelated hypergimentation (age spots). Exposure to the sun accelerates the production of Melanin and results in the skin becoming darker. In skin lightening/ brightening products it is therefore essential to incorporate an SPF >15, a good exfoliator and skin lightening/brightening actives. There are a number of active substances for lightening the skin in the Cosmetics market and each has a different functional mechanism. Generally, they inhibit the activity of the Tyrosinase enzyme. A number of skin lighteners such as, Arbutin, Hydroquinone and Kojic Acid can have a damaging effect on the skin. 3 Exfoliants A.H.A. EXTRACT 44 GLYCERIN (INCI: Aqua, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Malic Acid, Tartaric Acid, Citrus Medica Limonum Extract, Pyrus Malus Extract, Saccharum Officinarum Extract, Vaccinium Myrtillus Extract, Vitis Vinifera Extract) is a mix of fresh fruits extracts (Lemon, Bilberry, Apple, Sugar cane and Grape) with a complementary blend of alpha-hydroxy-acids (Citric, Lactic, Glycolic and Tartaric), also called fruit acids. It is a standardised extract of 44% AHAs in water and vegetable glycerin with no preservatives. AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) have been shown to improve the appearance of the skin by enhancing smoothness, luminosity and tone and also demonstrate exfoliating and moisturising activity. On penetrating the Stratum corneum, AHAs initially diminish corneocyte cohesion, readily detectable by desquamation. AHAs also reduce sebum secretion and deliver better moisturisation to the skin. Recommended usage level: 2-8% BAMBOO FIBRES POWDER (INCI: Bambusa Arundinacea Stem Extract) is a micronised and standardised natural powder of Bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) fibres. Offering gentle exfoliation when used in various cosmetic formulations to create smooth and fresh skin. The BAMBOO FIBRES POWDER is especially suggested for delicate and sensitive skin types. When incorporated into a cleansing or massaging product, it softly stimulates the micro- circulation by its mechanical and physical action on the skin.
