1 COURSE SYLLABUS Nail Technology Course Codes: 6154, 6155, 6156, 6157 INSTUCTOR: Casey Todd Course Description: The Esthetics program is designed to prepare students to take the national certification exam. Esthetics students receive training in the art and science of the care and beautification of skin. The course study includes instruction in diseases and disorders, chemistry, biology, and anatomy and physiology of the arm, chest, back, and face. Facials, waxing, tweezing, make up, and skin analysis are incorporated by means of theory and practical application on both mannequins and live models. Also included in the course of study is salon planning and management. Forty hours of classroom instruction are required before students receive practical, hands-on opportunities to apply skills. Instructional Philosophy: By developing each student mentally, personally, and professionally each student will leave this class not only with a great knowledge of this field but become a more rounded employer, colleague and over all person. A wide variety of instructional methods are incorporated to meet the needs of all student learners such as: Lecture, Visual Aids, Hands on Activities, Group Activities, One on One Instruction, Pair Share and Reflection Journals. Goals: The goal for each student is to successfully pass the SC State Board exam and be licensed in the field of Nail Technology along with helping each student grow their personal and professional skills to become a well rounded member of the work force. Notification: At the first of each month a progress report of each student s hours will be sent home. The student must sign for these hours proving that they have been received. Parents are able to check student grades through the Parent Portal at any time during the school year. Make up Policy: Make up work is placed in the missing work file on the instructor s desk and is the student s responsibility to pick up their missed work. There will be a note book along with the missing work file that the student must sign and date verifying that all assignments have been received. All make up work is due with in 3 school days of the student s return date. After this time a 0 will be entered in the grade book. Late Work: For each school day that an assignment is late the student will be docked 10points per class period.

2 Homebound/ISS Grades will be given for written work only when a student is homebound or in ISS provided it is done under the supervision of a teacher and turned in at the assigned time. All practical work and hours missed will need to be made up under the supervision of a licensed instructor. Grades Home work and lab assignments must be completed on schedule. You are responsible for bringing pencil, paper, textbook, study guides, work books and notebook to class each day. These items can be left in your locker, if not needed for home study. When I require reading assignments, work book pages, quizzes and test it is to prepare students for the state board exam. Therefore each assignment is just as important as the next. Test. When you study a chapter, you will be given an exam prep or essential review quiz to prepare you for the chapter test. You must make a 75 or better in order to pass. If you do not make at least a 75, you may retake the test, only after you have completed the Ready To Test Form located on my desk in the class room. Project Grades will be given and used for as many weeks as the project takes to complete. Procedures assignment sheets and projects are counted as test grades. Employability This counts as 20% of your nine weeks grade. You are grade on this each and every day. You will begin each 9 weeks with a grade of 100. For every infraction that occurs 5 points will be deducted from your grade. (Example: you do not have your homework to turn in. That is 5 points. You do not have shoes for the lab. That is another 5 points). You are graded on the following areas of employability. Attendance/Tardies Appropriate Dress Safety Attitude & Effort Time Management & Meeting Dead lines Integrity Following directions Please be aware of what you are being graded on and how it will affect you.. Please note that bell work and home work are included under employability. Sanitation Being sanitary is a large part of what we do. The State Board of Cosmetology requires that our lab and equipment be kept in a sanitary (clean) manner. You must keep your kits, workstations, class room and lab area organized and clean at all times. Sanitation skills are a requirement of this class. You will have a kit inspection each 9 weeks that counts as a test grade. You will be notified one class period in advance that you will be inspected. Prior to this inspection you will be provided with a rubric as to what is expected and how you will be graded.

3 Grading scale is as follows: Major 50% (Chapter Test, State Board Practical Labs, Projects) Minor 30%(Quiz s, Lab Practical Sheets) Employability 20%( Class work, Daily grades, Work Book Pages, Notes) Semester exams will count 20% of semester grades. You must find a location to shadow for this time period and provide your own transportation. June- Graduation The above subjects will be covered over the course of the school year. Some changes may be made to the order of instruction. Type of assessment used to monitor students progress: Worksheets completions Tests Hands-on evaluation Lectures/discussion participation Group participation Mid term and Final exams Assessments will occur at the end of each chapter or section of study. Practicing of manicures, acrylic/tips/wrap application, and polish application State Board Examination will occur routinely through the year. Students will be evaluated based on final product during these practices.
