5 What is skin? Our skin is our body s largest organ. It forms a continuous layer over the entire body and protects against water loss and most importantly environmental aggressors such as pollution, bacteria, wind, sun exposure and trauma. The skin consists of two layers: the epidermis and the dermis. Beneath the dermis lies the hypodermis or subcutaneous fatty tissue. The Epidermis: The epidermis is the thin, tough, outermost layer of the skin. The epidermal skin cells originate in the deepest layer of the epidermis and slowly migrate up toward the surface. Once the cells reach the skin surface, they gradually shed and are replaced by newer cells pushed up from below. The skins surface is relatively waterproof and, when looked after correctly, prevents most bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances from entering the body as well as protecting from trauma. In certain areas of the body such as, palms of the hands and soles of the feet, the epidermis is much thicker as these areas require more protection. Melanocytes are also found in the epidermis. Melanocytes are the cells that produce the pigment melanin, and cause us to tan. Melanin's primary function is to filter out ultraviolet radiation from sunlight which can cause premature skin aging and potentially skin cancers. The Dermis: Below the epidermis is the dermis. The dermis is a thick layer of connective tissue made mostly of collagen and elastin. These cells give the skin its flexibility and strength. As we age, we stop producing as much collagen and elastin which is why we start to see the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin sagging. The dermis also contains nerve endings, sweat and oil glands, hair follicles, and blood vessels. It is important to establish a daily skin care routine to care for our skin properly, maintain optimum functionality and retain a healthy radiance.
