Color can really make a big difference to how you look and feel have you had one of those days where people keep telling you that you look great and you don t know why, and then those other days when people ask if you re feeling OK and in fact you feel great? This is directly related to the colors you re wearing. Colors that complement your skin tone, hair and eye color will bring out the compliments in others. The warm toasted colors of the rich Exotic palette are inviting and generous. This palette has no hard edges and flows effortlessly from tone to tone as the colors merge into a harmonious pattern. The evocative nature of this color group welcomes communication and will make everyone at ease. When shopping for your garments ensure that what you chose has a richness and warmth reminiscent of the tropical forest abundant with warm flowers and foliage. pg 4

6 The Finer points of your palette Wardrobe Basics Staples charcoal, charcoal green, marine navy, dark olive, hazel, chocolate Interests rusty reds, olive greens, orange and purples Best Denim: Dark denim, medium blue denim, yellowed denim, yellow stitching How to Wear Black: Black is not a flattering color for you as. It is cool. Ideally only wear it at night, in fabrics that have a softened sheen such as silk, or fabrics that show some skin through such as lace or mesh. Keep black away from your face so as not to create unflattering shadows. Your ideal dark neutrals are colors such as brown, aubergine and greys with some green. Precious Metals: gold, brushed gold, copper, brass pewter Precious stones: Diamond, emerald, garnet, amber, tiger eye, jade Glasses Gold, teal, rust, copper, tortoiseshell. Choose frame colors that are from your metals range gold, bronze, copper or brass, or a metal frame in a light warm color such as orange, tomato red or even light olive. If choosing plastic frames try tortoise-shell or another yellow based color. The color of the lens for sunglasses must be warm yellows, browns, bronzes avoid blues, greys and black. Investment Buys Investment buys are the items that you want to remain in your wardrobe for as long as possible, as opposed to the tops and sandals that you are happy to wear for a season or two. Investments buys are most likely to be coats, jackets and trousers or suits, but could also be a fabulous cashmere jumper or a bag. Shoes and Accessories: The color of your everyday handbag should work with your wardrobe. Your neutrals are ideal as is any color from your swatch. When choosing shoes to go with a light cultured outfit you can wear a shoe that tones with your hair color even if you re not wearing that color you already have it on your body as your hair is always with you (on your head). pg 6

7 Suggested shades for coloring your hair: When coloring your hair for a natural look consider the following, or a combination from this list: Golden Brown Dark Golden Blonde Gold Copper Soft Copper Red Warm Brown Copper Gold Warm Grey Avoid black and platinum or ash blondes. Hair, Eye and Skin Enhancing Colors As we ve draped you, we ve probably found some colors that really make your eyes pop out and become a stronger color and more noticeable these colors are your eye enhancers and are great colors to be worn when communicating with people at a close distance from meetings to dates as they make people want to look you in the eye. We will have marked these colors on your swatch they are usually blues and greens for blue and green eyed people, and often deep reds and browns for brown eyed people. Your skin enhancing colors are often in the reds/pinks or purples as they bring out the color of the blood below the surface and make you look healthier and less pallid. Your skin intensifier will most likely be a version of teal. Your hair enhancing colors are either a similar shade to your hair, or the opposite on the color wheel, green for red hair, blue for brown hair, violet for blonde hair. Your eye enhancers work well in swimsuits, tops and scarves. Your hair enhancers will work well in shoes, coats, bags, belts. pg 7

9 Color Contrast (Monochromatic to Complementary) If you have brown hair and brown eyes choose monochromatic or analogous color contrast. If you have a hazel eye and brown hair look for an analogous color scheme. If you have blue or green eyes and brown hair choose a complementary color scheme to harmonies with your natural coloring. Hair = Color Neutral Skin = Color Neutral Eyes = Color Neutral My ideal color contrast level is: 1. Neutral Plus color plus a neutral or two neutrals together 2. Monochromatic colors in the same shade but different lightness or darkness e.g. a variety of blues together. 3. Analogous 2-3 colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel, such as green with blue, navy with violet, yellow with orange. Mix back with a neutral from your palette. 4. Triad take 2 corners of a triad (see color wheel), such as red and blue, and wear with a neutral to create a great color combination that is easy on the eye. Great options include violet and green, yellow and blue, green and orange. If you feel really adventurous you can add in the third color of the triad. 5. Complementary take two colors that are opposite on the color wheel such as pink and green and team with a neutral Always make sure when mixing colors that they are not combined in equal ratios, but instead try the 60/30/10 rule. pg 9

11 Personality and Contrast We ve covered color contrast and value contrast, the final piece of the puzzle is how your personality affects your contrast levels. Your personality can be a rule breaker or rule stickler one - if you are dramatic, rebellious or high energy (life of the party), no matter what your outward appearance, you may enjoy breaking the rules and wear high contrast if you appear to be low, or the other way round. If you are very quiet, shy or low energy (wall flower), you may prefer to wear more subtle combinations of color and value as you don t want to stand out from the crowd, even if you have high contrast coloring. Appearing Approachable Appearing Authoritative Dark neutrals such as navy, grey, brown, burgundy and purple and of course black. Combine your best dark neutrals with light colored shirts and bright accents in scarf or tie. Makeup should be stronger a slightly darker lip color rather than one that is neutral will have a more authoritative impact. Powder blues, purples, light greens and other soft shades show off your human side as do earthy toned neutrals which make you appear secure. Their message is that you re a team player who can empathize. Consider the fabrics too a softer less stiff fabric is also more approachable. Appearing Creative Unusual color co-coordinating, colors such as violet and purple have creative connotations. Black is often worn by those in creative industries. Avoid navy blue. pg 11

12 Appearing Dynamic Strong dark, bold or bright colors with high contrast such as red, hot pink, black, purple. Colors have a high saturation and instant impact. Combine strong neutrals with bold colors. Appearing Feminine Low contrast combinations of pastel colors, pink of course, romantic and sensual reds in soft tactile fabrics. Avoid sharp contrasts, Combine soft light colors with soft lighter neutrals. Appearing Sophisticated Look for rich colors such as burgundy and wine, mix with neutrals from camel to grey. Avoid pattern. Seek high quality fabrics and accessories. Wearing Colors which are not favorable There will always be occasions when you have something you love which may not be your perfect color. If you follow these set of rules you will always look great: Keep it as far as possible from your face Wear another color between it and your skin Keep the less than perfect color to only 10% of your entire outfit Wear it below your waist (it will have no impact there) Any color of medium intensity is easy to wear Use your ideal level of contrast in the outfit you are wearing to lessen the impact Show more skin, your skin will always suit you If necessary wear more make-up pg 12

13 Using Your Color Swatch Rather than tossing your entire wardrobe out from here on in make sure, everything you buy harmonizes with the colors in your color swatch. To know if a color is right, place your swatch near to the color/s you are looking at. If the colors feel in balance, that is they will flow together, there is a natural feeling or the color is within the same tones but not exactly the same shade then it is right. There are a multitude of colors available to you. Your swatch is just a guide to the feeling you are looking for. Take care of all of your orphans. Find the clothing in your wardrobe which co-ordinates with nothing else or only one piece. If it is in your color group look for more clothing choices to work with it. Any garment which co-ordinates with 2-3 other pieces you already own is a must buy. It is a wise investment. Medium intensity colors will co-ordinate the easiest with other options in your color group. These make an ideal choice for trousers, skirts and jackets. When co-coordinating you can always wear a neutral with a color or even two neutrals with a color just remember to put them together in your level of contrast as outlined earlier in this booklet. Wearing Your Colors Your Way Not all the colors in your palette may work well-worn as a single color above the waist, so you may need to wear additional colors or garments to add greater interest. For example, whilst your palette may contain light neutrals, these may not look the best in a block of color on your upper body, however, if teamed with a scarf, necklace, or additional interest colors from your palette, it may work well. pg 13

14 Using Color to Make the Right Impact Light and Bright and Warm colors ADVANCE, whilst Dark and Muted and Cool colors RECEDE. To be able to use color most effectively, you need to know what the advancing and receding colors are saying. Each color direction contains both advancing and receding colors. When combined they create a balance and can be used to offset one another. ADVANCING RECEDING Active Passive Analytical Intuitive Animated Quiet Assertive Submissive Direct Subtle Dramatic Reserved Extrovert Introvert Exuberant Calm Forceful Gentle Intense Relaxed Realistic Idealistic When combining colors in your outfit, choose the receding colors of your color direction for the part of the body you wish to minimize, and the advancing colors for the part of the body you wish to highlight. Red, orange, yellow and yellow-greens of any color direction will advance more than the green, blue/green, blue and violet of the same wheel. A dark color will always appear darker when placed near a light one. The dark color makes the light color look lighter, creating more of a contrast, a color break and focal point than if it were place alongside a color closer in intensity. How to Look Taller and Slimmer Wear your palette of colors, this way your look will harmonize with your coloring and make you appear taller and more slender as it creates a face focus. pg 14

15 Blend your shoes to your trousers, or shoes to your legs when wearing skirts. Blend tights with shoes and hose. Shoes that don t match trousers will shorten you and draw attention to your feet. If you don t want to blend shoe color, such as with denim, look for shoes in a darker color than the denim. Wear your medium to dark neutrals which will have the most receding and slimming effect. Match your shoes to your hosiery. Finer fabrics in darker colors over the area you wish to conceal are ideal. Head to toe black however a recipe for disaster is if they are made of stiff or chunky fabrics. Wear your eye enhancers the more you draw attention to your eyes, the less we are inclined to scan the rest of your body. Colors that are not related to your palette, will draw attention to themselves (and this includes black if it s not your color) and therefore force the gaze onto your body and away from your face. For a slimming effect wear a column of color, i.e. carry the same color through from head to toe; the color line adds height and has a slimming effect. pg 15

16 When selecting patterned garments, ensure 90% of the colors are from your color swatch; 10% of the colors in the pattern can be different Wear lighter, brighter colors up near your face which will draw attention there. To decrease the visual impact of your bust or belly wear darker colors on your top half. To visually take the focus from larger hips, thighs or buttocks then darker clothing on the lower half is important. Prints can be your friend as long as they are non-repeating and in the right scale for your body. Speak to your consultant to discover your scale. If all else fails anything of medium size is a safe bet. To Look Taller Darker colors worn as a central column of color will create a greater impression of height, especially if the pants are longer. To Look Shorter Creating contrast and breaks of color from head to toe will visually shorten you. To Look Curvier or Larger The opposite of the previous rules apply. Lighter warmer colors approach us so they will always emphasis the area they are covering. pg 16

17 What s Your Colour Personality? Different personality types prefer different colors. No matter what your color direction, these personality traits can be expressed in a harmonious way with your coloring. Even if you do prefer neutrals, you will still want to choose the most flattering neutrals to enhance your skin, hair and eyes, rather than the neutrals that wash you out. Think about your personality, you may find that you tend to fall into one of the following groups when choosing colors. 1. Neutrals are the basis of your wardrobe, you may bring in some light blues, or the occasional pieces of burgundy, but really you are most comfortable when color is not too apparent. 2. You identify with the colors of nature, soft greens, blues, sand, oatmeal, rust, sage, earthy browns, forest green. These colors are low key, but still colored, you may consider some to be a little smoky and softened. 3. You love color to add drama to your outfit. Black and red, and black and white are favourites. Hot pink, orange, cobalt blue are all colors that you are drawn to. 4. Mixing it up is something that appeals to you. You will wear out all sorts of unusual color combinations that others would fear to try. No color is off limits, but you are less likely to look for the high contrast, and go for a lower contrast, it s an interesting and different combination that appeals, not one that necessarily smacks you in the face. You may also prefer your color in a pattern rather than solid blocks. 5. Soft light colors appeal. Pastels are a favourite. Baby pink and blue, champagne and cream, lavender and periwinkle all put a twinkle in your eye. 6. Fresh colors, pg 17

18 make you feel alive, apple green, watermelon red, fuchsia, zesty lemon, turquoise and peach, the names make you drool and the colors make you happy. You will tend to team one of these with a neutral so that you re not overwhelmed by the colors. Color Personality 1. Neutral Classic Those of you who tend to choose neutral colors, shying away from most colors of the rainbow can be described as liking the colors of the classic style. Classic clothing is traditionally neutral in color. Wearers tend to prefer to be more understated and not draw too much attention to themselves. Bright colors make them feel uncomfortable. They like the simpleness and class of neutrals. Not spending lots of time worrying about if colors go together or not. Classic clothing tends toward the structured, smooth, low- textured, but this aspect of the clothing style may not appeal. Classic jewelry is traditional in its materials and construction, this also may not appeal. You may just incorporate the low-keyed nature of neutrals with another clothing personality style. Some prefer to wear the same shade of neutral head to toe, whilst others like to mix up their neutrals. There are many neutral options and you can still wear a variety of shades, whilst sticking to a neutral palette. Some of the words you may use to describe some of your personality traits include: Organized, Responsible, Conservative Professional, Mature, Sensible, Trustworthy and Reliable pg 18

19 Color Personality 2. Natural Relaxed/Casual If you prefer colors that you ll find in the natural world you like the colors of the Relaxed personality style. These are the more softened and subdued colors that you will find in the natural world. From sage and rust, through to soft blues and olives. Your staple neutrals are more likely to be oatmeal, stone, taupe, oyster, soft blues and greens and browns. You may also find that you prefer fabrics with some texture rather than being really smooth. Many find they either like natural fibres and are kinesthetic, and have to feel the fabric before even trying on a garment. Alternatively you may hate ironing and decide on only buying easy care fabrics that don t crease easily. Often in this personality style comfort is one of the most important factors, many have described to me thoughts that if their feet aren t comfortable, they just can t think. Some of the words you may use to describe some of your personality traits include: Relaxed Casual Unpretentious Approachable Easy-going Sporty Down-to-earth Natural Of course you may just like these colors and look for other details in garments from another personality style. pg 19

20 Color Personality 3. Bold Dramatic Do you like brighter or bold colors? Bold patterns? Shiny fabrics? Then you may be choosing your color and fabric choices from the Dramatic personality style. Do you love head to toe black, teamed with a bright red lipstick? High contrast patterns in large or bold designs may float your boat. If the word bold may be applied to a color or fabric, then this is likely to fit into this personality style. Some of the words you may use to describe some of your personality traits include: Bold, Dramatic, Dynamic, Assertive, Direct, Demanding and Intense Other elements of dramatic personality style include oversized details such as bags, and collars, high heels, pointed toes on shoes, large scale jewelry. Clothing tends to be structured and sharp. Even high tech or futuristic is possible. Comfort is not particularly important to a true dramatic, form is king over function. The center of attention is where you like to be, and where these colors will put you. You may enjoy bringing in the latest fashion color into your outfit. pg 20

Eclectic Creative Creative colors are varied, and don t come from a particular palette, but more of willingness by the wearer to try out all sorts of interesting mixes of colors, not just red, white and blue together. They are less likely to be very bold or bright, but more often those who choose this also like patterns and mixing patterns too. Some will also like mixing textures and fabrics for added elements of surprise and interest. You may like a touch of whimsy or a more bohemian vibe. Alternatively asymmetry, unusual construction or deconstruction may float your style boat. Some of the words you may use to describe some of your personality traits include: Creative, Innovative, Original, Avant-garde, Quirky, Imaginative and Unique You may also like wearable art either in fabrics or jewelry or accessories. Mix up the unexpected whether styles of clothing, fabrics or patterns, it s your imagination that rules the day. pg 21

22 Color Personality 5. Soft Feminine Colors are soft and pretty and may be pastel, not harsh or bold. Light blues, purples, pinks, greens and lemons. Champagne, mushroom and cream, fawn, light grey and beige are preferred neutrals over dark colors like black, brown and deep navy. Fabrics are also soft and touchable, silk, satin, velvet, cashmere, definitely those enjoyed by the more kinesthetic. Drape is also important in the flow of the fabric, never stiff or heavy, instead lighter and with a soft drape. Some of the words you may use to describe some of your personality traits include: Feminine, Caring, Warm, Nurturing, Gentle, Considerate, Understanding, Non-threatening Other aspects to this style of dress are that the clothes always show off the female form, they tend to have a waisted appearance, never boxy or sack like. Details such as lace, frills or flounces, sequins or beading, small floral or nature inspired patterns may also be found. Jewelry tends to be delicate and pretty, never chunky or bold. These color choices tell the world you re not conventionally ambitious, you don t want to intimidate, instead you want to be warm and approachable. These colors say that you care. pg 22

23 Color Personality 6. Playful Sportive Americans may see this style related to the Preppy style. It s a style for the extrovert. Bright fresh colors, pinks, blues, greens, often a couple of them mixed at once. It s a clean and neat style, related to the Relaxed style, but brighter and more fun and sporty. It s not so high contrast and bold as the Dramatic. It s brighter than the Feminine style. It s more colorful than the classic, and less structured and formal. Colors are mixed with lower key neutrals such as navy, beige and khaki (rather than the black of the dramatic). Personality traits you may relate to: Upbeat, Charming, Vivacious, Social, Animated, Traditional and Classy Other elements you ll find in this style are good quality fabrics, generally natural fibres. High quality real gem jewelry is a must, but never over the top, diamond studs not chandelier earrings for example. Patterns are likely to be stripes and checks, floral, gingham, paisley, argyle or stylized prints. pg 23

Triangle Your face has a broader jaw line than forehead. You will want a style that balances your face. 27 Day Time Make-Up Application PRIMER A primer will create a smooth base for your concealer and foundation to flow onto your face. It will stop your make-up appearing blotchy and keep it in place longer. Apply primer in light stokes. It will spread a long way. CONCEALER Concealer should be applied with your ring finger. Pat the product onto your ring finger tip to ensure a light coverage and press onto the area in question. In the case of redness from rosacea or broken capillaries or pigmentation problems then the concealer should be applied before the foundation. Green concealer will counteract redness. Use very lightly and sparingly. Press the product onto your skin do not run it on. Pink concealer is great for lightening areas around the outer eye and brightening them up. Skin tones are great for lightening skin discoloration. FOUNDATION Application of foundation should be with a foundation brush, or fingers to give an even and natural coverage. For a lighter finish select a mineral powder, tinted moisturizer or bronzer. Test the color of the foundation on the side of the cheek. Apply your foundation across the forehead, down the nose and cheeks. Ensure it is blended in at the jaw line Mineral Powder: this is the latest and will give you even coverage and it is very easy to apply. Using a Kabuki brush will make your application hassle free. Mineral make-ups are paraben and talc free so are good for your skin and wellbeing. TRANSLUCENT POWDER Shake the powder into your hand and, using a large brush, apply lightly and quickly over the face. The translucent powder sets your foundation, gives you a good surface for your make-up to adhere to. By using downward strokes you will brush all of the fine hairs on your face down flat. N.B. when using pressed powders always place the applicator back into the container usage side up so that pg 27

28 facial oils on the pad do not build up on your product and render your product useless. EYESHADOW the lightest shade should be applied all over your lid. The medium shade fills in your lid below your brow bone and you can use a deeper color as a thicker eye line across the top of your eyelid. You may use the darker color under your eye by bringing it in about a third. After application use a sponge applicator or cotton bud to soften the line. You can smudge with the rubber end of an eyeliner pencil or you can use a cotton tip. EYEBROWS brush your eyebrows down. Apply your pencil in feathery strokes along the top line of your brow. Take care to draw the line in over your existing eyebrow. Do not fill above your eyebrow or the line will still be visible when you brush your eyebrow back into shape. Use it to fill in gaps and create extra length if necessary. Ensure it is well blended with either your brow brush or your finger. MASCARA Never pump your mascara. Apply a coat from the top side of your top lashes down, the next coat on the underside of your top lashes and a final coat onto the topside of your lashes again. Mascara has a shelf life of 3-6 months due to drying and potential build-up of infectious matter from your lashes. BLUSH Blush starts level with the end of your nose and in a third from the outer corner of your eye. It should not reach as far as your ear but this is not a hard and fast rule. It needs to come across your face to level with the top and middle of your ear. Blush can also be applied to your temples and as an eye-shadow for a quick 5 minute make-up. When applying blush start close to the ear in case you have too much on your brush. Build up is easily removed from this area than if it is in the middle of your face.
