11 Nail Technology 240 Clock Hours 2 months Dove International Academy Nail technology is a full programme of nail beautification and artistry preparing students in the nail art, artificial nails (nail tips, sculptured nails and nail wrapping), sanitation, manicuring, Pedi curing; plus, personal ethics, salon management and employer/employee/client relations. Dove International Academy graduates would have mastered different types of spa pedicures which include soothing mud masks, rejuvenating scrubs and relaxing massage techniques. Spa pedicures are a popular stress reliever. Clients are loyal to their nail techs. Most clients that have artificial nail enhancements would rather find a new doctor than a new nail technician. Artificial nail clients return to the salon on the average once every two weeks. Nail Technicians are in high demand. Most salons and day spas are in need of qualified nail technicians. The spa movement has increased the demand for spa manicures and pedicures. Salons currently report an abundance of clients requesting these services and not enough qualified nail technicians to accommodate them. 11

Each student accepted to the college receives instruction in technical massage skills including: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Heated Stone, Pre-Natal, Infant and Sports Massage, Reflexology and Aromatherapy. Caring for OTHERS and SHARING our talents while we embark on the JOURNEY to PERSONAL GROWTH & professional development To become an educator, a qualified cosmetologist must first attend an instructor training course. If a cosmetologist is qualified for more than one year, 300 hours of training is required. If they are qualified less than one year they will be required to receive 450 hours of educator training. Upon completion of training a written examination is administered by the college. A score of 75% is required for qualification as an instructor. Massage Therapy Educators are trained in all educational areas offered by the massage therapy program. 16

20 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Dear Applicant: Before enrolling please read this career outline as a guide to see if a career in Cosmetology & Beauty Therapy is what you thought it was. Physical demands Cosmetologists, Aestheticians, Nail Technicians & Massage Therapists, by the very nature of what they do, are required to spend long hours standing, sitting, bending, reaching and performing repetitive motions. As with other physically demanding vocations, these work activities can cause fatigue and/or pain in various parts of the body and serious injury can sometimes occur. Some aches, pains and/or injuries develop slowly over a long period of time. In many cases, health challenges can be prevented through improved posture, better work habits, and proper equipment or proper equipment use. An important part of one s education is to understand that developing good habits at the beginning of training will help prevent injury and/or health issues in the future. Many full-time cosmetologists work more than 60 hours a week, including evenings and weekends when beauty salons are busiest. Appearance A professional looking dress code is a must for the Cosmetology & Beauty industry. Students are being trained for a professional career in the beauty industry and the everyday appearance of each student should reflect that image. During your training at the Dove International Academy the following will apply: 1. Attire: Professional Dress a) Maintain a good overall appearance. b) Uniform: College shirt issued by the school. Black slacks, caprice, or skirts. (Pants and skirts must be clean, professional and at least knee length.) c) Shoes: Closed-toed shoes must be worn for all Cosmetology programs. Comfortable tennis shoes are recommended. d) Hair should be attractively styled to reflect the profession. e) Nails should be clean & look nice. Massage Therapy students should have short & smooth nails. f) Make up should look professional and reflect the industry that you represent. Note: Jackets (other than school issued), denim pants, athletic pants, cut-off pants, shorts, sleeveless shirts, open toed shoes, etc. are not allowed. A staff member will inform you if your attire is unacceptable. 20
21 2. Personal Hygiene a) All students need to bathe on a daily basis. Deodorants or antiperspirants should be used. b) Good oral hygiene is a must. Breathe mints spray, or gum should be used on a daily basis. Note: Any student who is in violation of the appearance policy will be sent home. The student will have the option of returning to class at 12:30 p.m. providing they have corrected the violation. Conduct Rules Students must complete assigned sanitation duties each day. Students must be in class with all required materials at the applicable starting time (this includes books, pencils, etc.). Conversation will be limited to professional topics only. Students will practice patience and be courteous at all times. Classrooms are limited to only those students scheduled to be in attendance. Personal problems and/or issues will be left at home. Students are responsible for cleaning their work/training area before and after the scheduled event. Acts/Items Prohibited at the College It is strictly forbidden to possess or use any alcoholic beverage, drug, narcotic or intoxicant while on college premises. It is strictly forbidden to possess firearms, knives or weapons of any kind while on college premises. No student shall access restricted areas, property or records. Removal of college, clients, or student's property is prohibited. Neglect, carelessness or mischief which results in damage to property belonging to the college, clients, or other students is prohibited. Posting, defacing or removing notices/signs from any college bulletin board or other college property. Discourtesy, verbal or physical abuse of college staff members, clients, or students is not allowed. Profanity of any sort is unacceptable anywhere on college premises. This includes break time. No yelling at any time. Refusing to service clients, lack of safety precautions, and being unprepared for assignments or services. Students are not allowed to sign in or out for each other. The use of cellular phones or beepers is prohibited inside college buildings (except during break time). No food or drink in the classroom or on the clinic floor. Except for bottled water. No training kits (cases) allowed on the clinic floor (kept in locker only). 21
22 No sleeping at anytime during college hours. No inappropriate conversations. Example: private or personal issues. Personal conversation from student to student while working on a client. Minimum Grade Requirements Dove International Academy of Cosmetology & Beauty Therapy requires students to maintain a minimum grade average of 75% in theory and 75% in practical application. All written tests and quizzes will be included in the theory grade. Grading Scale Theory % - A - Excellent 80-89% - B - Good 75-79% - C - Satisfactory 00-74% - D - Unsatisfactory Forms are provided for each student to record his/her theory grades, clinic service, attendance, etc. This will be done by each student on a daily basis. Through this procedure the students are constantly aware of their progress and their grades. Students failing to maintain grades and other required standards are promptly, individually and privately counselled. Personal assistance is available and every effort is made to help the student correct his/her deficiency. An unwillingness to try or failure to cooperate with the minimum grade policy may result in the students dismissal from school. 22
