3 Websites for Gathering Information and Research: Course Description, Stylist: The Cosmetology program is a sequence of modules that prepare students for careers in the field of cosmetology. Learning opportunities develop the academic and professional knowledge and skills required for industry employment and career advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state law and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, skin, hair, and nail diseases and disorders, hair treatments and manipulations, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application, skin and nail care, hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, interpersonal relations, computer skills, employability skills, and work ethics. This course is designed to prepare students for the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology (OSBC) Licensure Test. Instruction consists of theory, practical lab experience, and clinical lab experience. Course Objectives/Outcomes, Stylist: The course objectives include: Preparing students for post-program success, both in the work force and in their educational pursuits. Preparing students to process information using higher order thinking skills and to engage in sound decision-making. Providing a rich learning environment utilizing research-based methods of instruction, state-of-the-art technology, and current resources and materials. Maintaining high expectations for all students regardless of educational needs and providing support necessary for achievement. Providing a challenging, worthwhile curriculum based on current industry/academic expectations. Specifically and upon successful completion of the program/course for Cosmetology the students will be able to demonstrate proficiency with: Sanitation and Bacteriology Sanitation, Sterilization Bacteriology Dispensary Requirements and Operations Scalp Care Anatomy of the Head, Hair, and Scalp Shampoo and Rinses Scalp Treatments, Disorders and Diseases Hair One Marcelling, Iron Curls Fingerwave, Pin Curls 3
4 Basic Hair Styling and Techniques Haircutting, Hair Trimming Care of Wigs, Postiches, Pressing Hair Two Permanent Wave Chemical Relaxing Tinting, Bleaching, Foiling Manicuring Anatomy of Nails, Skin, and Muscles Basic Water, Oil, Electric Nail Techniques Artificial nail Applications Hand and Arm Bleach Hand and Arm Massage Skin Care Facials and Make-up Masks and Packs Eyebrow Arching Salon Operations and Communication Skills Human Relations Personality/Presentation Salon Operation Sales/Interpersonal Skills Career Development Cosmetology Laws and Rules Ohio Cosmetology Statues and Rules Inspection and Enforcement Grading: Evaluation of student performance is based upon pupil performance objectives relating to course competencies study. The number of competencies mastered and the degree of mastery is translated into appropriate grades consistent with the C-TEC Board of Education policy on grading guidelines, practices, and procedures. In the process of evaluation, instructors obtain several grades for each student within the time frame of the program/course. These grades may include, but are not limited to, performance on tests, quizzes, homework, assignments, special research projects, classroom participation, lab competency mastery and/or improvement and the demonstration of positive employability traits. Grading Scale % - A 80-89% - B 70-79% - C 60-69% - D 59% or below F 4
5 Journal Reflection: A journal reflection should begin with an introductory paragraph that introduces the main topic of the article and summarizes its content. Following the introduction, a few paragraphs should be written detailing insights, implications, and how the information might be applied in your career. In addition, the reflection should include your personal thoughts and opinions concerning the content of the article. Reflections should be approximately 1 1/2 to 2 pages in length. Credentialing: Upon successful completion of the program the student will be able to apply for the Ohio Board of Cosmetology Licensure Test. Course Policies: Disruptive Behavior Disruptive behavior of any type is NOT permitted and may result in dismissal from the program. Sleeping during class, tardiness to class, excessive talking during class and disrespectful behavior are examples of disruptive behavior. Plagiarism Submitting plagiarized work for an academic requirement is considered academic misconduct. Plagiarism is the representation of another s work or ideas as one s own; it includes the unacknowledged word-for-word use and/or paraphrasing of another person s work, and/or inappropriate unacknowledged use of another person s ideas. Diversity - It is the responsibility of the instructor and the students to foster and maintain a harmonious, non-threatening and non-discriminating environment in the classroom. Therefore, all individuals are to be respected as equal and contributing partners of our society. Dress Code You never get a second chance to make a first impression. A professional appearance is the goal and expectation of the C-TEC Cosmetology Program. A black apron is required to be worn during lab hours. 1. Slacks Black or Gray (plain only no prints or stripes) NO JEANS, SWEATPANTS, or LEGGINGS. Capris are acceptable ONLY if they fall below the knee. 2. Shirts Black, gray, or white (no prints, patterns, or writing). Short or long sleeves are acceptable. 3. Sweaters/Sweatshirts Black, gray, or white (no prints, patterns, or writing). 4. Shoes Shoes and shoestrings must be black, gray, or white. Clogs are acceptable. NO OPEN TOED SHOES. 5. Dresses/Skirts Black, gray, or white (plain no prints, stripes, patterns, or writing). Dresses or skirts must fall below the knee. 6. NO HATS. 7. Jewelry Facial jewelry is acceptable if small and discreet. Final decision is at the discretion of the instructor. 5
