3 WHAT IS IPL? IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike similar lasers it uses a broader spectrum of light to achieve greater results, particularly on white, grey and blonde hairs. We commonly (and incorrectly) refer to IPL as LASER HAIR REMOVAL. It s similar, but not the same thing... IPL TECHNOLOGY AT THE BEAUTY LOUNGE ANTHÉ LIA IPL The technology used by the Body Sanctum Beauty Lounge is the Anthélia Dermato-Aesthetic Medical IPL - patented for also targeting those lighter hairs which many other machines cannot target with great success. 2

4 HOW DOES IT WORK? The IPL headpiece emits a heated light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair which, when heated to the right degree, cauterizes the blood supply to that hair follicle, stopping future hair growth. Effective hair removal requires the follicle to have an active blood supply. As you progress through the treatments, the follicle size and structure changes, requiring adjustments to be made to the machine in order to target the finer regrowth. The hair is eliminated in 4 to 8 treatments on average, according to your hair growth and the area being treated. Hormonal conditions or external factors causing hair growth may not be treated as effectively and we might ask for a medical certificate from your doctor before going ahead with treatments. 6 WHAT IS A FITZPATRICK SKIN TYPE? The Fitzpatrick scale is a global method for measuring the level of pigment in your skin... It s how we determine the specific settings for your treatment and ensure the greatest success with optimal safety. It measures several factors, including genetic disposition, tanning habits and reaction to sun exposure to determine how the skin may respond to treatments. Performing a treatment on the wrong Fitzpatrick scale for your skin can risk burning the skin and causing pigmentation problems and unnecessary damage. I This information is covered in depth in our consultation process. Pale, porcelain or ivory IV Caramel or medium brown II Skin burns very easily and doesn't tan. Likely to have light blonde or red hair. Fair, beige or cream-coloured V Skin will tan easily and rarely burn. Bronze or rich brown III Skin will usually burn and has difficulty tanning. Light brown, golden or olive VI Skin will tan without burning. Mahogany or dark brown Skin will sometimes burn and will tan gradually. Skin never burns and will tan very quickly. 5

7 HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED? The number of sessions will vary from person to person based on hair type and the area being treated. A skin analysis and consultation is compulsory prior to going ahead with any treatment and if you have your first treatment on the same day, we ll provide your consultation free of charge!
