I didn t seal this piece, but if you are accustomed to sealing, then do so. I don t always seal wood because I like to put washes of color on my piece and get a light color wash for my backgrounds. I can still add color washes on top, and it will soak into the background. Start with the blue area by painting in Williamsburg Blue. Pickup Winter Blue and slip-slap in areas. Do this wet into wet so you get a better blending of colors. Spatter White Wash. You can add stars, snowflakes, etc. now or after you ve finished painting. The lower red area is Tomato Red and Deep Burgundy painted the same way. Avoid the faces, fur, and green hat though. Don t try to stay within the pattern lines. Let your paint dry brush under these pieces for a smoother edge when applying them back into the design. However, I did paint Tomato Red under the hair on the lower left singer. 3 Faces Paint all the faces following the same instructions. Base coat Warm Beige (Flesh Tone). Repeat as needed. Float thin Terra Cotta across their forehead for a slight shading. Dry brush their cheeks in with a mix of Warm Beige plus Terra Coral. Add a little more Terra Coral after they dry. Tip their nose with this mix also. Their open mouth is Terra Coral, shaded Deep Burgundy. Their lower lip is a float of Terra Coral. Sideload your brush in Dark Chocolate and float their eyes in keeping your strongest color on one side and fading off on the opposite side of the eye. Without cleaning your brush, pick up Lamp Black, and float over the Dark Chocolate, not covering it completely. Add a White Wash highlight to each eye. Add a slight highlight under each eye using Natural Buff. Their eye brows are small strokes using thin Terra Cotta. The girl with her eyes closed has tiny eyelashes using Traditional Burnt Umber. Float Natural Buff across her eyelids. artistsclub.com 3

4 Tan Hat Base coat Burlap. Repeat as needed. Lightly sponge some design over the hat using Sable Brown. Float Sable Brown for shading on the hat. Float thin Deep Burgundy for a tint shading on the right side, above and below the green band. The hat band is Arbor Green, shaded first with Forest Green, and then Evergreen. The stripes are Green Mist. The linework is Whispering Turquoise. Float extra Deep Burgundy under the hat bow and her collar. Fur Collar Base coat Cashmere Beige. Load the corner of a small brush in Milk Chocolate and begin to tap in shading. Tap in Light Mocha for a highlight. Work these 2 colors back and forth to resemble fur. Try to keep your darker shading on each side. Add some light Mocha linework. Hair Load the tip of a medium size brush (8 or 10) and stand your brush up on the tip and wisp in Terra Cotta for hair. Add linework of Terra Cotta, and Traditional Burnt Umber. Float thin Traditional Burnt Umber shading over her hair just under the brim of her hat. Red Hat Basecoat Tomato Red. Repeat as needed. Shade behind the fur band with Deep Burgundy. Highlight the top of her hat with Scarlet. The snowflakes on her hat are Scarlet. The fur band is the same as the first girls collar, only I didn t add Light Mocha linework. Green Hat Base coat Arbor Green. Shade Forest Green first and then Evergreen. The plaid linework is Lemonade. The fur band is Bleached Sand. Tap in Mississippi Mud for shading on each side. Tap White Wash in for a highlight. Tap in more Bleached Sand. Work all of these colors back and forth keeping the darker colors on each side, and the lightest at the top. The shading on the fur on the left of her face is Mississippi Mud. Hair and Star Band Slip-slap Dark Chocolate in for the hair on the lower left girl. It will be mostly covered so just try to keep the area around her face looking like wisps of hair. Add Traditional Burnt Umber linework. The hair ribbons are Tomato Red, shaded Deep Burgundy, and highlighted Scarlet. The highlight will need to be repeated. Float some Blue tints in her hair using your sky colors. The stars are Antique Gold. Connect them with Antique Gold linework. Add smaller gold and blue stars surrounding her hair and allowing some to fall out over the background. Spatter lightly with White Wash. Frame Paint Tomato Red, moving into Deep Burgundy and back into Tomato Red. I kept the base of the piece Tomato Red. Add snow to the inside window frames using White Wash. FINISH Spray varnish several times allowing to dry in between sprays. 4 artistsclub.com
