23 How did I end up in England? Oh, wait it s just a random 1930s Presbyterian castle. Because that s totally normal. What the hell. Yeah this looks useful. Look at all that pedestrian traffic at prime-time Saturday during a festival weekend. In honor of James W. Bates, whose life also went nowhere? Interesting how as a city councilman, he in effect dedicated it to himself 6

24 Nowhere on one end, and crumbling education infrastructure on the other maybe that bridge is more representative than I thought. If you want to really learn about a place, don t walk the streets. 25 Here Comes The Bun A ray of bunshine no A lovely set of buns no Ok, there s a funny pun to be made here but I don t know what it is. The cupcakes rock and the coffee is cheap. That s what s important. Part-owner of the bakery. Tattoo as awesome as her cupcakes. Assistant baker. She sits down with me and begins to tell me about an artist 8

27 John isn t a tattoo artist. He s an artist that just happens to also do tattoos. Common remark on the streets of Whitesburg Closed shops and economic depression: the Appalachia most of us are familiar with. But is there hope for the future? 10

28 Could modern/urban life (and pop culture) influence Appalachia for the better? Let s ask Victor Mäntyranta. He flew almost 5,000 miles from Sweden to Whitesburg just to get a custom tattoo from John. The kicker? He wasn t looking for a tattoo. He found out about John through his banjo music and stumbled upon his tattoo business.
