1 THE ROTARY CLUB OF ESSENDON D9800 President : Peter Halaseh ABN P.O Box 161 Essendon 3040 Australia Contact us and follow us on facebook Editor Sunil Perera Volume 81, Issue 36, 12 th April 2016 Sergeant Richard Lawrence opened the meeting and welcomed President Peter Halaseh, President Peter reminded all of the Art show & the Charter Night on the 17 th May and the great speaker selected for this annual event. President Peter spoke to the members present of the following upcoming projects: Art show which will be jointly sponsored with the Rotary club of Keilor East, he mentioned that he would like to see the Art show continue and be a success, he reminded all that there will be guests from the Moonee Valley Council as well as other Art lovers. RDNS a project that the RCE funded, a building on the railway land and now vacated by the RDNS, possibility of using this building for other work after the building is inspected. Jack Honson informed that he had the original plans and will help in the inspection Forum day Brain storming, looking into training needs of new members, support from district, how to attract new members and other topics to be discussed, any topics to be discussed can be forwarded to the club Secretary Peter Baker. Rotary Presents Charter Night Cluster Groups Michael Cariss announced the birthdays as follows: Neil Henderson (who had to pay a fine for organising a celebration) Janet Knee & Anne Rogers. Michael also announced that our President Peter was celebrating his 8 th year in Rotary Veronica O Sullivan spoke about the upcoming Art Show and informed all present that the proceeds will go to Peru for building schools, St Bernadette School, she stated that this a community project and encouraged all to get involved in any way possible by devoting time to this annual project and asked all to get the word out there so that the required publicity is given to this project. Veronica said that the cost per person is $55 and drinks are available at bar prices, she also asked all to come to the gala night on Friday. Veronica stated that there were still some items required such as a gas heater, a marquee and a fridge trailer, she said that this year we are expecting to raise over $30,000 or more. Raffle was won by Don Knee but he failed to draw the joker, the second raffle was won by Anthony Taranto who gave a very interesting two minute talk of rowing in the Maribyrnong river with his son. Speaker for the day Our speaker was Tamara Hycenko, who gave her new members talk to the members present. Tamara said that her parents were first generation migrants from Russia who ran away from the Russians in 1945, she said if they had not done so they would have been sent to Siberia. She said her parents met in Austria where they were married in 1946 and her sister was born 9 months later in Austria. She said that her parents with the infant child travelled down to Italy and as it was just after the war Italy was in turmoil and the infant nearly died as there was hardly anything to eat and decease was rife. She said her parents finally managed to board a ship to Melbourne and was sent to various refugee camps around the country and finally ended in a camp in Rushworth where Tamara was born. She said that the next few years were a struggle for her parents but they worked hard and bought a house in Moonee Ponds. The next 15 years she said was uneventful, she said she was almost 13 years of age when they got a TV set and 16 years when her Dad finally purchased a small second hand car.

2 Tamara met her husband John in 1970 and married in 1971 and she says her married life was a roller coaster and a very joyful life. They built their first home in Strathmore Heights and lived there for 18 years before moving to another house in Strathmore and lived there until she decided to downsize 3 years ago. Tamara said that after they married, she and John both worked for his parents (also migrants from Russia) in a licenced grocery store, Tattslotto started in June 1972 and John applied to get an agency and was granted a licence. Tamara related a story of how they were held up by an armed robber with a gun and Tamara thought the gun was fake and fought him until the robber ran away chased by John who was shot in the leg. She said that John built a very successful business and expanded the Tattslotto business to Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Cook Island, American Samoa & Guam. John also negotiated that a portion of the takings to go to sporting facilities and sports teams for the Olympics which the Governments of those islands agreed to do. Tamara said that in 1982 her eldest son Andre was born and in 1986 Mark was born and she became a stay at home mum. Tamara stated that in January 2000 John was diagnosed with aggressive cancer of the oesophagus which ended his life the following June, she said he was not a smoker. Tamara said that this was a very difficult time for her and it was like walking in a fog, she said she had to work through this fog slowly and started work after a holiday in Italy. Tamara mentioned that she now trains guide dogs and said that she is grateful to have had a great & fortunate life and decided to join Rotary to do community work to help other people rise above their misfortunes. 6 THANK YOU - GOLF DAY A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS Thank you to the Golf Day committee of Alistair Fraser, Grant Stephenson, Kelly Abfalter, Alf Puglia and Michael Mahoney for their excellent work in staging this event and the handsome surplus of some $16,000 that was achieved. Thanks also to all those that helped out on the day as well as all of our sponsors... MEN S SHED THANKS GRILL D We have recently received a $100 cheque from Grill d Moonee Ponds in support of our MEN S SHED. Thanks to Grill d for their support and thanks to those that ate there during January and deposited a token into our project jar as part of the Grill d local matters initiative.

7 Rotary Hats Have you ever wished that you had something to wear at Rotary events and projects to let others know that you are proud to be a part of the wonderful international organisation that is Rotary? With the Men's Shed and the Art Show coming up I know that I am wanting to wear something that clearly tells our local community who it is that is doing the great work around them. I will be submitting an order for caps and bucket hats with the Rotary logo and the word "Rotary" on the front. Please see the attachments for pictures of the cap and bucket hat. The caps are one size fits all and the bucket hats are M-L or L-XL. The cost will be $20 each including shipping. In this image based world of ours branding is one of the main ways we publicise ourselves and our work. This is a great opportunity to have an item that you can easily and comfortably use to clearly show that you are a member of an elite, hardworking and special group when you are out and about. Please submit your order to me via no later than 4pm Thursday 24th March I will be in touch with you personally to indicate preferred payment methods. I do hope you will take this chance to purchase a cap or hat. Lisa Lowcock lisa.lowcock@preceptservices.com.au
