In late June Amahl and I spent a few days in Melbourne visiting galleries and museums, enjoying a range of cuisines and doing a lot of walking despite the attraction of all CBD trams being free.

We almost gave up on visiting Van Gogh & the Seasons at the NGV, thwarted by the longest queues I ve ever seen for an exhibition and an online booking system which collapsed under the pressure.

In late June Amahl and I spent a few days in Melbourne visiting galleries and museums, enjoying a range of cuisines and doing a lot of walking despite the attraction of all CBD trams being free. In Bendigo an old friend insisted on taking us to the city s splendid Art Gallery. It s huge with a terrific collection. We almost gave up on visiting Van Gogh & the Seasons at the NGV, thwarted by the longest queues I ve ever seen for an exhibition and an online booking system which collapsed under the pressure. I couldn t help but compare this with our visits to the two major repositories of the artist s work in the Netherlands, Amsterdam s Van Gogh Museum and the lesser-known Kroller-Muller Museum in the countryside where we were the only visitors! Eventually getting into the Melbourne exhibition we were impressed that photography was actually encouraged. Considering their current value it s hardly surprising very few of his best-known works were included, but it s a cleverly curated collection. At TAS, Joy Holt is exhibiting An Animal Story comprising a number of vigorously painted canvases and small ink and wash studies. While the African elephant, monkeys, hippo, tiger, rhino and, particularly, the lions are quite charming, I d love to see more native Australian creatures drawn from life. The Magic of Paperbark s five enthusiastic contributors show mainly birds, flowers and trees, broadened by Joan Naumann s Pastoral Aerial View, essentially a textural abstract in warm earth colours, and impressionistic close-up views Rock Formation and Tide s Out by Ros Slack. It s time to start thinking about our September Members Exhibition with more than $1500 in prize money (entry form attached). However, if you print your own copy, please ensure that you print it double-sided so that the entry form section is back to back. (Print page 1, reinsert that page and print page 2 on the reverse making sure that they are head to head.) Please read carefully and abide by the conditions & presentation requirements as well as the dateline in order to avoid disappointment when you submit your work. This exhibition is a selected exhibition, and there is no overall theme. For the Harry Hart Award, open to everyone, the selectors & judges will be looking for works where experimentation is paramount. He was a fine sculptor, his best known works being the Bernborough equine bronze in Oakey and the Jimmy Crow memorial at Crows Nest. Nancy Culliford Nancy Culliford was the wife of TAS benefactor, the late Wal Culliford. Harry Hart Painter and ceramic sculptor, musician and actor, Harry was a major contributor to Toowoomba s cultural scene. He taught art at TSHS Mt Lofty & Harristown SHS for many years before retiring. During his long association with Toowoomba Art Society he became a most popular teacher/mentor of the Wednesday Group, imparting a love of technical experimentation. Late entries will not be accepted. Artists may submit up to three entries. All entries must have been completed within the past 12 months and not have been exhibited previously anywhere else. Works can be either 2D or 3D and may be in any medium from traditional to digital. Works must be the artist s original unaided work, not done under tuition, plagiarised, i.e. copied from or based on someone else s artwork or photograph, whether published or not. The artist must allow images of work to be reproduced in any media promotion. Works on paper must be framed, but a stretched canvas is considered framed see presentation requirements. All works must be professionally prepared for display and be for sale see presentation requirements. Maximum sizes: 2D 1 sq. metre (variable dimensions) 3D base: 60cm X 60 cm (variable height) All works must be for sale and the sale price should include the 10% TAS commission and GST if applicable. All works must have a label securely attached to the back with name, address, phone, title of work, medium and price. Ensure that entry form details match with labels on works. No alterations to entry details or labels will be accepted once the entry form is received. Works not selected for exhibition will be stored at TAS and collected at the end of the exhibition. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist. Whilst all care will be taken, TAS will not be responsible for any loss or damage, however caused. Sold and unsold works must be collected between 2pm and 4pm Sunday, 1 st October. If sold work is to be forwarded to the buyer, the cost of postage should be added at the point of sale or borne by the artist.
