5 OKTV TAPESCRIPT TASK 1 Today we travel around the world exploring the history of chocolate. Its story begins with a plant whose scientific name, Theobroma Cacao, means "food of the gods." For centuries, people have been enjoying the rich flavor of chocolate, a product made from this plant. Historians believe the Maya people of Central America first learned to farm cacao plants around two thousand years ago. The Maya took the cacao trees from the rainforests and grew them in their gardens. They cooked the cacao seeds, then crushed them into a soft paste. They mixed the paste with water and flavorful spices to make an unsweetened chocolate drink. The Maya poured the chocolate drink back and forth between two containers so that the liquid had a layer of bubbles, or foam. Cacao and chocolate were an important part of Maya culture. There are often images of cacao plants on Maya buildings and art objects. Ruling families drank chocolate at special ceremonies. And, even poorer members of society could enjoy the drink once in a while. Historians believe that cacao seeds were also used in marriage ceremonies as a sign of the union between a husband and wife. The Aztec culture in current day Mexico also prized chocolate. But, the cacao plant could not grow in the area where the Aztecs lived. So, they traded to get cacao. They even used cacao seeds as a form of money to pay taxes or give as holy offerings to the gods. Only the very wealthy people in Aztec societies could afford to drink chocolate because cacao was so valuable. The Aztec ruler Montezuma was believed to drink fifty cups of chocolate every day. The explorer Christopher Columbus brought cacao seeds to Spain after his trip to Central America in But it was the Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes who understood that chocolate could be a valuable investment. In 1519, Cortes arrived in current day Mexico. He believed the chocolate drink would become popular with Spaniards. After the Spanish soldiers defeated the Aztec empire, they were able to seize the supplies of cacao and send them home. Spain later began planting cacao in its colonies in the Americas in order to supply the large demand for chocolate. The wealthy people of Spain first enjoyed a sweetened version of the chocolate drink. Later, the popularity of the drink spread throughout Europe. The English, Dutch and French began to plant cacao trees in their own colonies. Chocolate remained a drink that only wealthy people could afford to drink until the eighteenth century. During the period known as the Industrial Revolution, new technologies helped make chocolate less costly to produce. OKTV 2016/ forduló

6 Farmers grow cacao trees in many countries in Africa, Central and South America. The trees grow in the shady areas of rainforests near the Earth's equator. But these trees can be difficult to grow on farms as they are much more easily threatened by disease and insects than wild trees are, so growing cacao is very hard work for farmers. The trees require an exact amount of water, warmth, soil and protection. After about five years, they start producing large fruits called pods, which grow near the trunk of the tree. The seeds inside this pod are harvested to make chocolate. Today, chocolate industry officials, activists, and scientists are working with farmers. They are trying to make sure that cacao can be grown in a way that is fair to the farmers and safe for the environment. To become chocolate, cacao seeds go through a long production process in a factory. Workers must sort, clean and cook the seeds. Then they break off the covering of the seeds so that only the inside fruit, or nibs, remain. Workers crush the nibs into a soft substance called chocolate liquor. This gets separated into cocoa solids and a fat called cocoa butter. Chocolate makers have their own special recipes in which they combine chocolate liquor with exact amounts of sugar, milk and cocoa fat. They finely crush this "crumb" mixture so it is smooth. The mixture then goes through two more processes before it is shaped into a mold form. Chocolate making is a big business. The market value of the yearly cacao crop around the world is more than five billion dollars. Chocolate is especially popular in Europe and the United States. For example, in two thousand five, the United States bought one point four billion dollars worth of cocoa products. Each year, Americans eat an average of more than five kilograms of chocolate per person. Specialty shops that sell costly chocolates are also very popular. Many offer chocolate lovers the chance to taste chocolates grown in different areas of the world. OKTV 2016/ forduló

7 TASK 2 Tattoos have become so amazingly trendy recently that some people say they have already begun to go out of fashion as any other fashion trend does after the peak of its popularity. Now that every other person wears a tattoo, and even middle-aged professionals and grandmas or grandpas are lining up for a quick tat, you just won't get the reaction you'd like any more, they say. According to some research studies, percent of Americans have some type of long-term body art, and I ve just read that 50 percent of Hungarians have a tattoo, so tattooing seems to have lost its most important aspects: peculiarity and distinctiveness. Even the word tattoo itself is slowly becoming outdated: in the United States, a recent study showed that 59 percent of people think the word ink is trendier than tattoo. But why do people get tattooed to start with? People get tattoos for various reasons, but all the reasons are connected to one common cause the past experience of the individual. The experiences can be positive or negative for the individual. That's is why different people get inked for different reasons, and different tattoos invoke different emotions in different individuals. Let s take a quick look at some of these different reasons people get tattooed for. Well, probably the most important reason is, of course, that tattoos are favored for making a fashion statement a lot of people simply find them beautiful pretty much like make-up or jewelry. Also, a lot of athletes, rock stars and other celebrities do it to create a unique identity for themselves, and it helps them to stand out from the crowd, so for them tattooing serves as a publicity tool. A lot of ordinary people think they can be like the stars if they do the same. Tattoos, just like any other thing related to a person, are an extension to his or her personality. Everything that a person owns, admires or believes in reflects his or her personality and main beliefs. A car, a dog, a cell phone and the clothes a person puts on all reflect the way a person sees himself or herself and how he or she wants to be seen by others. By tattooing their bodies, they think they can also express and define their own unique and individual style. Our current society craves individuality and self expression, and now that tattoos have beeen made popular by celebrities, many people choose to wear their artistic expression. Some people get tattoos to reinforce an identity: People use tattoos to stress on their main identity and to remind themselves of who they are. This identity can be "I am dangerous", "I am special", "I am strong" or anything else that a person is proud of. OKTV 2016/ forduló

8 Others do it to reveal their identity to people, or they may get a tattoo to show a visual display of reminders of spiritual or cultural traditions or identification with a group. A lot of people get tattooed to mark a significant aspect of themselves or their life, and also to remind themselves of a value that is particularly important to them. Many people honor their family and loved ones in a tattoo design. Some people get tattoos that have symbols that have special meaning for them. This is one of the reasons why you might not understand the meaning of a person's tattoo from the first look. As we have seen, the reasons people get tattooed are many, the end result is always the same: it's permanent! The beauty of life is that it s unforseeable and unpredictable and we change with our experiences. What we stand for and believe in at 18 is very different than 35 or 60. In addition, tattoos are banned in many work environments and are also considered socially unacceptable in many parts of the world, so it s a good idea to be careful with tattoos. OKTV 2016/ forduló
