Opened on the anniversary of the massacre of Via D Amelio, in which the judge Paolo Borsellino and the members of his security detail lost their lives, The Spiral of Life by Gianfranco Meggiato commemorates a troubled period for our country, offering a glimpse of its depth to give rise to a moment of emotional engagement and reflection. A still living, painful theme that has had a profound impact on the city of Palermo. Con questa installazione si arricchisce ulteriormente il programma di Palermo Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2018, instaurando un dialogo con il territorio, con la sua storia e con i suoi abitanti. Inaugurata nel giorno della strage di via D Amelio, in cui persero la vita il giudice Paolo Borsellino e la sua scorta, La Spirale della Vita di Gianfranco Meggiato ricorda un periodo doloroso per il nostro Paese, ne lascia filtrare l anima, dando vita ad un momento di commozione e di riflessione. Un tema ancora vivo e penoso che ha toccato nell intimo la città di Palermo. The installation, besides revealing the power of its content and the skill of the artist in its interpretation, narrates the story of a dramatic era through personal experience, summoning indelible images to which each person returns as flashes of memory, fragments and instants of human truth linked to the identity of the territory. The work thus becomes a means and an instrument to bring values and emotions to the surface, in an apt interpretation of history. Austere, essential but extremely communicative, forthright and sincere, the spiral prompts meditation and awareness of human responsibilities. Through the sacrifice of so many victims, it can be possible to reach a moment of rebirth and freedom: this is the strongest message, a sign of hope and change. L installazione, oltre a palesare la profondità dei contenuti e la professionalità dell artista nell interpretarli, racconta la storia di un epoca drammatica attraverso un esperienza personale, risvegliando immagini incancellabili e simboliche che ognuno rivive come flash della memoria, frammenti e istanti di verità umana legati all identità del territorio. L opera diventa così un mezzo e uno strumento per fare emergere valori ed emozioni che meglio interpretano la storia. Austera ed essenziale ma estremamente comunicativa, schiettamente sincera, La Spirale induce alla meditazione e ad una presa di coscienza delle responsabilità umane. Attraverso il sacrificio di tantissime vittime si può arrivare ad una rinascita e alla libertà: è questo il messaggio più forte, un segno di speranza e di cambiamento. Positioned in front of the nascent No Mafia Memorial, Meggiato s work represents not only a cultural moment that brings together art and history, but also one of the positive examples of collaboration which the city of Palermo has activated, especially in 2018 with Manifesta and the designation as Italian Capital of Culture, with private interests in order to foster a process that can become a driving force for territorial growth. Posizionata di fronte il nascente No Mafia Memorial, l opera di Meggiato rappresenta non solo un momento culturale che riassume arte e storia, ma anche uno dei positivi esempi di collaborazione che la città di Palermo ha attivato, con i privati, in particolar modo nel 2018, con Manifesta e con Capitale Italiana della Cultura, al fine di promuovere un percorso che diventi un volano di crescita per il territorio. 7 Director of the Regional Museum Network for Modern and Contemporary Art of Palermo Direttrice Polo Museale Regionale di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Palermo Valeria Patrizia Li Vigni One of the main objectives of the Regional Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is the programming and promotion of contemporary art in Sicily, through support of young Sicilian artists and collaboration with museums, institutions and foundations of national and international renown. In perfect tune with the idea of breaking down the barriers of museums and working in a network to create coordinated joint programs aimed at the improvement of life through culture, the project The Spiral of Life by Gianfranco Meggiato, curated by Daniela Brignone, involves the contributions of I-Design, Museo Riso and the No Mafia Memorial in the production of an installation that symbolizes the arduous path of human beings through life. The spiral is found in prehistoric graffiti as a symbol of growth and fertility, a reflection of the cosmic energy that makes seasonal cycles possible. Mircea Eliade, in his essay Observations on the Symbolism of Shells, sees the measure, standard and rhythms of life in the spiral. A set of straight and curved lines, it is a dynamic image of sociality and of the network created by groups that aggregate in a continuous movement. The spiral intercepts systems that range from the macrocosm of the heavenly universe to the microcosm of biology and DNA. In the context of Manifesta 12, this is the second project Museo Riso shares with the biennial, after Breaking Myth, the exhibition produced with SCAD Atlanta in the education section, and shown at Museo d Aumale in Terrasini. Il Polo d arte moderna e contemporanea ha tra i suoi obiettivi principali la diffusione e la tutela dell arte contemporanea in Sicilia, sia attraverso la promozione dei giovani artisti siciliani sia attraverso le collaborazioni con musei, istituzioni e fondazioni di fama nazionale e internazionale. In perfetta sintonia con l idea di abbattere le barriere dei musei e lavorare in rete creando programmi solidali condivisi volti al miglioramento della nostra vita attraverso la cultura, il progetto La Spirale della Vita di Gianfranco Meggiato, curato da Daniela Brignone, vede il coinvolgimento di I-Design, del Museo Riso e del No Mafia Memorial, nella realizzazione dell opera La Spirale della Vita che riporta simbolicamente all impervio cammino dell uomo nella vita. La Spirale e presente nei graffiti preistorici, simbolo di crescita e fertilità, testimonianza dell energia cosmica che rende possibile la ciclicità stagionale. Mircea Eliade nel suo saggio osservazioni sul simbolismo delle conchiglie vede nella forma a spirale la misura, la norma e i ritmi della vita. Insieme di linee rette e curve, si pone come immagine dinamica della socialità e della rete creata dai gruppi che si aggregano in un continuo movimento. La Spirale intercetta sistemi che vanno dal macrocosmo dell universo celeste al microcosmo della biologia e del DNA. Nell ambito di Manifesta 12 è il secondo progetto che il Riso condivide con la biennale dopo Breaking Myth, mostra realizzata con lo SCAD University di Atlanta nell ambito della sezione educational ed esposta al Museo d Aumale a Terrasini

9 This installation, in the center of Palermo, is an ode to the defense of the values of life and culture. It is the Spiral of Life, as opposed to the spiral of death, which seems to dominate in today s society. The installation has a diameter of 10 meters and is made with military sandbags placed in the form of a spiral, with a sculpture at the center, 4 meters in height, titled: Il Mio Pensiero Libero / My Free Thought. Questa installazione, posta nel cuore di Palermo, è un inno alla difesa dei valori della vita e della cultura! È La Spirale della Vita, contrapposta alla Spirale della morte, apparentemente dominante, nella società contemporanea. The work by Gianfranco Meggiato within the collateral project I-Design curated by Daniela Brignone expresses with force and discretion, indignation and respect for the victims, the cruelty of recent history and the lightness of a positive vision of the future what we have tried to explain with many words over the years. The story of the city of Palermo, yesterday and today, passes from mafia massacres to a situation of rebirth that imposes change. A process that belongs to the present, which the spiral of life obliges us to cross, culminating in a positive movement of emotions and sensations. 13 Artistic Director, MARCA museum Catanzaro / Direttore Artistico museo MARCA Catanzaro: Rocco Guglielmo Palermo commemorates the over 800 victims of the mafia, hosting The Spiral of Life, an environmental installation by the Venetian sculptor Gianfranco Meggiato, placed at the center of Piazza Bologni. The project is part of the program of Manifesta 12, among the collateral events, and is a result of the artist s forceful determination to create a truly extraordinary monumental work of authentic meaning. Standing on the Renaissance piazza in Palermo, in the shadow of the triumphant Charles V, Meggiato s spiral made with over 2000 burlap sandbags becomes a dominant presence with its bulk; surrounded by noble palaces, its sinuous curve symbol of the sufferings and difficulties of life wraps its way around a fixed point. At the center of the work, after having come across the names of the victims of Cosa Nostra printed on each of the sandbags, the visitor stands before a superb white sculpture, My free thought, a symbol of freedom from any constraints and the achievement of knowledge and justice. Gianfranco Meggiato comes to terms with extremely timely topics of great social importance, such as war and the suffering of civilian populations. An innovative, engaged artist, his work is particularly compelling. In this project, among the partners involved there is again the presence of Fondazione Rocco Guglielmo and the MARCA Museum of Catanzaro, confirming the relationship of esteem that links me to this artist, and the fact that I believe strongly in his work, recalling what we have achieved together not so long ago: The Garden of the Silent Muses, which was Gianfranco Meggiato s first large-scale installation, presented for the first time in Catanzaro in the month of June 2017 and later in Venice, during OPEN20, the international exhibition of sculptures and installations. On that occasion Meggiato s art made inroads into various public spaces in the capital of Calabria: the Mediterranean Biodiversity Park, one of the largest outdoor museums in Europe, the Mu.S.Mi (Museum of Military History), the MARCA Palermo omaggia le oltre 800 vittime di mafia, ospitando La Spirale della Vita un installazione ambientale dello scultore veneziano Gianfranco Meggiato, situata nel centro di Piazza Bologni; progetto che si inserisce nel programma di Manifesta 12, tra gli eventi collaterali, fortemente voluto dall artista, che ha realizzato un opera monumentale davvero straordinaria e dal significato autentico. Innalzata nella rinascimentale piazza palermitana, all ombra di un trionfale Carlo V, La Spirale di Meggiato, composta da una trama di oltre 2000 sacchi di juta, domina incontrastata per la sua mole l area su cui sorge; avvitata dall abbraccio di nobili palazzi, la sinuosa curva, simbolo delle sofferenze e delle difficoltà della vita, si snoda avvolgendosi intorno a un punto fisso. Al centro dell opera, dopo essersi imbattuti nei nomi delle vittime di Cosa Nostra, impressi su ognuno dei sacchi militari utilizzati, ci si trova davanti ad una superba scultura di colore bianco Il mio pensiero libero simbolo di libertà da ogni legame e conquista di coscienza e di giustizia. Gianfranco Meggiato si confronta da sempre con argomenti estremamente attuali e di forte rilevanza sociale, come la guerra e le sofferenze che colpiscono la popolazione civile. Artista innovativo, impegnato, il suo lavoro è estremamente trascinante. In questo progetto, tra i partners coinvolti, è di nuovo presente la Fondazione Rocco Guglielmo ed il Museo MARCA di Catanzaro, a riprova della stima che mi lega all artista, del fatto che credo fortemente nel suo lavoro e del ricordo di ciò che assieme, e non molto tempo fa abbiamo realizzato: Il Giardino delle Muse Silenti l opera che ha segnato l esordio di Gianfranco Meggiato nella pratica installativa di grandi dimensioni, presentato per la prima volta a Catanzaro nel mese di giugno del 2017 e successivamente nel mese di ottobre a Venezia in occasione di OPEN20, l esposizione internazionale di sculture e installazioni. Anche in questa occasione l arte di Meggiato ha contaminato numerosi luoghi pubblici del capoluogo calabrese: il Parco 22 23

Only the farsighted determination of a tireless artist could make My free thought arrive in Palermo, in a very special moment for the city and its inhabitants. Once again, the result is clearly suited to the spaces and perfectly reflects the efforts that have gone into its achievement. The Spiral of Life does not respond only to aesthetic purposes, but also sets out to express profound emotional meaning. It bears witness to what has been, in full awareness of the future to come; almost a place of worship where we feel the need to stop and think along the way, before reaching the core of the work. The artist s aim is to convey to visitors the deep bond between the city and art, to communicate the importance of freedom of thought. Rocco Guglielmo della Biodiversità Mediterranea, il più grande museo all aperto d Europa, il Mu.S.Mi (Museo Storico Militare), il MARCA Museo delle Arti di Catanzaro ed il Parco Archeologico di Scolacium. E solo la lungimiranza di un artista tanto tenace e infaticabile ha fatto si che Il mio pensiero libero arrivasse anche a Palermo in un momento molto particolare per la città e per tutta la popolazione. Un risultato sicuramente anche questa volta adeguato agli spazi e corrispondente perfettamente agli sforzi profusi per realizzarlo. La Spirale della Vita è concepita non solo per soddisfare una mera esigenza estetica, ma per esprimere un signifcato emotivo profondo. E testimonianza di ciò che è stato e consapevolezza del futuro che sarà; quasi un luogo di culto dove, prima di arrivare al cuore dell opera c è la necessità di soffermarsi passo dopo passo lungo il cammino. L ambizione dell artista è quella di trasferire al visitatore il profondo legame tra la città e l arte al fine di divulgare l ampiezza della libertà di pensiero. Rocco Guglielmo 24 25

16 You are inside the spiral, an archaic symbol that links back to the beginnings of mankind and represents life in its ebb and flow, its sometimes twisted, difficult paths that are nevertheless indispensable to reach the awareness of Free Thought. 18 Art critic / Critico d Arte Luca Nannipieri Ethics and aesthetics in Gianfranco Meggiato The Spiral of Life is perhaps the installation of greatest civil impact made to date by Gianfranco Meggiato. Entering the spiral, following the curve of the military sandbags towards the center of the work, each sack bearing the name of a victim of the mafi a, the contrast we feel between a sense of poignancy and one of inebriating energy is extremely vivid. The deep feeling comes from that memorial of names not carved in marble, not etched on iron or an institutional plaque, but placed on a fragile material, organic and also poetic in nature, like burlap. But at the same time, beyond the emotion, reaching the fulcrum of the work that is a vertical sculpture 4 meters in height, we are pervaded by a thrilling sense of excitement. Etica ed estetica in Gianfranco Meggiato La Spirale della Vita è forse l installazione di più forte impatto civile fi n qui realizzata da Gianfranco Meggiato. Entrando all interno della Spirale, seguendo l incurvarsi dei sacchi militari verso il centro dell opera, ognuno dei quali contraddistinto dal nome di una vittima caduta sotto il fuoco della mafi a, il contrasto che avvertiamo tra un senso di commozione e un senso di inebriante esaltazione è molto spiccato. Commuove quel lungo memoriale di nomi, impressi non sul marmo, sul ferro o su una lapide istituzionale, ma su un materiale fragile, di natura organica e anche poetico come la juta. Ma al tempo stesso, oltre alla commozione, arrivando al fulcro dell opera che è una scultura che svetta in verticale per 4 metri, pervade un senso di inebriante esaltazione. Meggiato s ability to construct beauty and at the same time to connect it, with poise and respect, without any political or ideological stridency, to one of the harshest and most dramatic chapters of democratic Italy, namely the deaths caused by the mafi a, makes this installation one of his most symbolically complex works. La capacità di Meggiato di costruire bellezza e, al tempo stesso, di congiungerla, con equilibrio e rispetto, senza alcuna polemica politica o ideologica, ad uno dei capitoli più duri e drammatici dell Italia democratica, ovvero i morti per mafi a, rende questa installazione una delle opere simbolicamente più complesse dell artista. Visitors, invited to follow a curved path composed of many identical, homogeneous forms the sandbags proceeds with a horizontal gaze through the long series of names of the victims. As the curve tightens towards the central point of the spiral, the large sculpture rising to the sky appears, like a liberation. There is an almost physiological thrust of the gaze upward, towards the very top, the harmonious tip of those sculptural forms. It is no coincidence that Meggiato has not placed his sculpture at the start of the path but at its fi nish, to make our horizontal perspective shift to the vertical dimension, driven by the rising presence of his creation. Memorials, in Italy and the world, from the Military Shrine of Redipuglia near Gorizia to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center in New York, from Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center Il visitatore, invitato a seguire il percorso curvato composto da tante forme uguali ed omogenee come lo sono i sacchi di juta, tiene uno sguardo orizzontale in mezzo a quell accodarsi di nomi su nomi delle vittime. Poi, quando la curva si accentua nel gorgo centrale della Spirale, ecco comparire come una liberazione la grande scultura che si eleva al cielo. Vi è una spinta quasi fi siologica nell alzare gli occhi in alto, a seguire fi no in cima la punta armoniosa di quelle forme scultoree. Non a caso Meggiato non ha messo la sua scultura ad inizio percorso, ma nel suo culmine, affi nché i nostri occhi da orizzontali si facessero verticali, sospinti dalla verticalità della sua creazione. I memoriali, in Italia e nel mondo, dal Sacrario militare di Redipuglia vicino Gorizia al National September 11 Memorial & Museum al World Trade Center di New York, da Yad Vashem 33

19 of Jerusalem, to the vast Polish War Cemetery of Monte Cassino, stand out for their expanse and the marmoreal solidity of their structure, suggesting the perpetuity and monumental calm of the shrine. Upon closer consideration, the large Cretto by Alberto Burri at Gibellina, created to commemorate and exorcise through art the tragedy of the earthquake of Belice that razed the city to the ground in 1968, also has the character of a memorial, of a shrine, with its vast size (65,000 square meters) and the permanence of it pale poured concrete. The World Holocaust Remembrance Center di Gerusalemme al vasto ossario militare polacco di Montecassino, si caratterizzano per l estensione e per la solidità marmorea della struttura, tale da suscitare perennità e quiete monumentale al sacrario. A pensar bene, anche il grande Cretto di Alberto Burri a Gibellina, ideato per eternizzare ed esorcizzare con l arte il dramma del terremoto del Belice che rase al suolo la cittadina nel 1968, ha nella vastità delle sue dimensioni (65mila metri quadrati) e nelle perennità della sua gettata di cemento chiaro il carattere del memoriale, del sacrario. Gianfranco Meggiato, on the other hand, pays homage to those who have lost their lives in the struggle against organized crime by reversing one of the recurring symbolic connotations of monuments, namely the static solidity of the structure. Here, inside the installation, the sandbags emit a pleasant odor of drying plants; they are yielding to the touch, impermanent by definition (burlap, unlike marble or bronze, pulverizes over time). With the names of the dead inscribed in spray paint, they indicate the sense of a history that is not fixed and blocked in time, that has not passed, but is dramatically present (unlike the victims of the Shoah or of the attack on the World Trade Center, whose numbers are limited, fixed in time, the ranks of the victims of the mafia continue, unfortunately, to grow). Walking through these walls of sandbags one reaches the fulcrum of the structure, which as we have seen is represented by the remarkable upward thrust of this outstanding work. While the walls are full, packed, without the slightest space between one bag and the next, the sculpture is instead an ode to air, light and empty space. The more the walls repress us (with a subtle sense of humiliation, for all the men and children we have been unable to defend from the bombs and bullets of organized crime), the more the snowy white sculpture, with a large sphere of reflecting steel at the center, attracts us with its gentle, sinuous forms. Ethos and pulchritudo are perfectly combined in this work by Meggiato, as never before. The ethos, i.e. the moral drive to want justice and civil liberties for individuals, and the pulchritudo, namely beauty as an aspiration of eternity, are the two great forces in play in this work. The artist thus demonstrates that art is not distant from the traumas of history, paradoxically becoming the most lucid, farsighted way to put them into focus. Beauty, which the artist is by vocation expected to produce, if he does not want to make pure decoration, pure furnishings, simply gracious context, if he does not want to engage in solitary intuition, as Pier Paolo Gianfranco Meggiato, invece, realizza un tributo a chi ha perduto la vita contro la criminalità organizzata ribaltando uno dei connotati ricorrenti e simbolici nei monumenti, ovvero la statica solidità della struttura. Qui, nell installazione, i sacchi che emanano un gradevolissimo odore di pianta seccata, molli al tatto, non permanenti per definizione (la juta, a differenza del marmo o del bronzo, si sfarina nel tempo), con i nomi dei morti impressi con lo spray, indicano il senso di una storia che non è fissa e bloccata nel tempo, che non è passata, ma è drammaticamente presente (a differenza dei morti della Shoah o degli attentati alle Torri Gemelle, il cui numero è oramai chiuso dalla storia, le vittime di mafia ahimè sono in continuo aggiornamento). Camminando tra queste pareti di sacchi, si arriva al fulcro della struttura che, come abbiamo detto, è rappresentato da questo importante lavoro slanciato verso l alto. Mentre le pareti sono piene, stipate, non un filo di luce tra sacco e sacco, la scultura è invece, per opposto, un esaltazione di ariosità e spazi vuoti. Quanto più le pareti soggiogano (si percepisce un sottile sentimento di umiliazione per tutti quegli uomini e quei bambini che non abbiamo saputo difendere dal tritolo o dai proiettili della malavita organizzata) tanto più la scultura bianca nivea, con al centro una grande sfera in acciaio specchiante, ti attrae per la sinuosità gentile delle sue forme. Ethos e pulchritudo si connubiano perfettamente in quest opera di Meggiato, come mai prima. L ethos, cioè la spinta morale a voler giustizia e civile libertà per gli individui, e la pulchritudo, cioè la bellezza come aspirazione all eterno, sono le due grandi forze in azione in quest opera. L artista dimostra così che l arte non è lontana dai traumi della storia, anzi ne è, paradossalmente, la messa a fuoco spesso più lucida e lungimirante. La bellezza, che un artista è chiamato per vocazione a compiere, se non vuol essere pura decorazione, puro arredamento, puro grazioso contesto, se non vuol essere, come scriveva Pier Paolo Pasolini, un puro intuire in solitudine senza alcuna incidenza nel reale, si deve 34 35

20 Pasolini wrote, without any impact in reality, must feed on the continuous tension between ethical and aesthetic drives. We have already examined the moral and civil thrust of this installation. Now let s focus on aesthetics, or generally on the aesthetic idea that has permeated the inimitable style of this artist for a number of years now. First of all, we should point out a very singular factor with respect to the sculpture of the 20th century: through his sculptures, Meggiato sheds more light on the invisible than on the visible. He often says: I am more interested in emptiness than fullness. But how is it possible to represent emptiness in sculpture? How can we represent the invisible, the un-representable? Many 20th-century artists have left us with material masterpieces that now belong to the history of art (Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, all the way to Giacomo Manzù, Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, Edoardo Alfieri, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Igor Mitoraj, Gigi Guadagnucci, Pablo Atchugarry); though with extremely different expressive styles, they have worked starting with solids, with a sense of fullness, which they gradually eroded, slimmed, wounded, pierced, cracked. Instead, Gianfranco Meggiato, and before him that genius, Costantin Brancusi, seems to work in the opposite direction: looking at the void instead of the solid. The invisible spaces in his works are just as exciting as the full zones. The unrepresentable, the void, the non-consistency par excellence, becomes consistency thanks to the curved, harmonious forms he produces. It might seem like a paradox, but it is so: the void which by nature is unthinkable, lets itself be thought through the works of Meggiato; emptiness, which is un-representable, lets itself be represented in his works. The immaterial allows itself to be materialized. The splendor of form, its marble, aluminium, bronze, lights up the splendor of non-form, the surrounding void. This is the aesthetic that is so appealing in his work. alimentare della continua tensione tra la spinta etica e quella estetica. Ora concentriamoci sull estetica, in generale sull ideale estetico che permea da vari anni lo stile inconfondibile del nostro artista. È da notare anzitutto un fatto assai singolare rispetto alla produzione scultorea novecentesca: attraverso le sue sculture Meggiato fa più luce sull invisibile che sul visibile. Lui stesso lo dichiara spesso: mi interessa di più il vuoto del pieno. Già, ma come rappresentare in scultura il vuoto? Come rappresentare l invisibile, l irrappresentabile? Molti degli artisti del Novecento che ci hanno consegnato capolavori materici che sono oramai nella storia dell arte (Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, fino a Giacomo Manzù, Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, Edoardo Alfieri, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Igor Mitoraj, Gigi Guadagnucci, Pablo Atchugarry), pur nell estrema diversità dei loro stili espressivi, hanno lavorato a cominciare dai pieni, da un senso di pienezza che è stato via via corroso, snellito, trafitto, ferito, crepato. In realtà, Gianfranco Meggiato, e prima di lui quel genio che fu Costantin Brancusi, sembra lavorare all inverso: cioè vedendo il vuoto più del pieno. Gli spazi invisibili nelle sue opere sono altrettanto eccitanti dei pieni. L irrappresentabile, ovvero il vuoto, l inconsistenza per eccellenza, diventa consistente attraverso le forme curvate e armoniche che lui produce. Sembra paradossale, ma è così: il vuoto che, per sua natura, è impensabile, attraverso le opere di Meggiato si lascia pensare; il vuoto, che è irrappresentabile, attraverso i suoi lavori si lascia rappresentare. L immateriale si lascia materializzare. Lo splendore della forma, dei suoi marmi, dei suoi allumini, dei suoi bronzi, illumina lo splendore della non forma, del vuoto attorno. Questa è l estetica che tanto attrae in lui. Not by chance, to make his artifacts Meggiato does not use a computer, and does not commission their manufacture by specialized companies. Like an artist-craftsman in medieval workshops he is personally involved in every aspect, from the idea to the forming and the entire process of the making of the works. Non è un caso che, per realizzare i suoi manufatti, Meggiato non lavori al computer, non li faccia realizzare a distanza su commissione da ditte specializzate, ma come un artistaartigiano nelle botteghe medioevali e rinascimentali si dedica interamente, personalmente, all ideazione, alla formazione e all intero processo realizzativo delle opere. As Stefano Zecchi aptly says, these are sculptures that lend themselves to intense allegorical interpretation, or as Luca Beatrice, curator of the previous installation with sandbags (The Garden of the Silent Muses) writes, his models selfgenerate each other, identifying the need to develop a precise value of imagery in the plastic action. Come ben dice Stefano Zecchi, sono sculture che si prestano a un intensa interpretazione allegorica, o come scrive Luca Beatrice, che ha curato la precedente installazione con sacchi di juta (Il Giardino delle Muse Silenti), i suoi modelli si autogenerano l uno nell altro, identificando il bisogno di sviluppare nell azione plastica un preciso valore iconografico

21 Zecchi and Beatrice have identified a characteristic of barely visible presence in Meggiato s work, which this installation dedicated to the victims of the mafia forcefully underscores: the reference to symbolic contents that would seem to be beyond the grasp of the abstract nature of the language. His works resemble twists, movements, radiations of pure aesthetic form, without any thought beyond clear stylistic equilibrium. Yet the increasingly frequent need to make temporary installations with social and philosophical content (of which this one on the innocent victims of crime is simply the most marked) demonstrates that the tension between ethics and aesthetics is still alive and active in the artist; just as Meggiato continues to be convinced that the task of the artist is to produce beauty, but a beauty that is not simply ornament, urging us to put the mystery and the abyss of human existence into focus through his works. When you look at length into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you, Friedrich Nietzsche wrote. This double movement of looking and being looked at, of searching and being deeply searched, belongs to an art that is not mere provocation, or entertainment, or set design, but krísis, i.e. decision, choice, judgment. An artist like Meggiato does not produce beauty to entertain, to adorn a place (though his works are very enhancing), but in keeping with a precise choice, a precise decision, which is both ethical and aesthetic in nature. In fact, in the installation The Garden of the Silent Muses, the sandbags formed a labyrinth, which in the words of the artist himself is a metaphor of the human condition and man s search inside himself ; while in the present installation, The Spiral of Life, the spiral is the archaic symbol that links back to the advent of humankind and represents life in its turns and returns, with the sacks of memory, bearing the names of those killed by the mafia, victims of the spiral of death, martyrs of a living idea of freedom. The ethical and aesthetic dichotomy is a matter of substance in Meggiato s oeuvre, and this latest memorial installation demonstrates it in an absolutely clear, solemn way. Sia Zecchi che Beatrice hanno individuato un carattere poco visibile, ma assai presente nell opera di Meggiato, che questa installazione dedicata alle vittime della mafia esalta fortemente: ovvero il suo rimandare a contenuti simbolici che l astrattismo del linguaggio parrebbe non toccare. Le sue opere sembrano torsioni, movenze, irraggiamenti di pura forma estetica, senza alcun pensiero se non il nitido equilibrio stilistico. Invece la sempre più frequente necessità di fare installazioni temporanee a contenuto sociale e filosofico (di cui questa sulle vittime innocenti della criminalità è soltanto la più evidente) ci dimostra che la tensione tra etica ed estetica nell artista è sempre viva e agente; così come è sempre vivo in Meggiato l essere convinto che il compito dell artista sia produrre bellezza, ma la bellezza che non vuole essere soltanto ornamento è quella che ci spinge a mettere a fuoco, attraverso le opere, il mistero e l abisso dell umano. Se guardi a lungo l abisso, anche l abisso ti guarda dentro, scriveva Friedrich Nietzsche. Questo doppio movimento del guardare e dell essere guardato, del perlustrare e dell essere profondamente perlustrato, è proprio dell arte che non è semplice provocazione, o intrattenimento, o scenografia, ma krísis, cioè decisione, scelta, giudizio. Un artista come Meggiato non produce bellezza per intrattenere, per adornare un ambiente (seppure le sue opere siano molto adornanti), ma secondo una precisa scelta, una precisa decisione, che è sia etica che estetica. Si veda infatti che, nell installazione Il Giardino delle Muse Silenti, la forma dei sacchi componeva un labirinto che, secondo quanto dice lo stesso artista, è metafora della condizione umana e della ricerca dell uomo dentro se stesso ; mentre, nella presente installazione La Spirale della Vita, La Spirale è simbolo arcaico che rimanda agli inizi della comparsa dell umanità e rappresenta la vita e i suoi corsi e ricorsi, con i sacchi della memoria, intrisi dei nomi dei caduti di mafia, vittime della Spirale della morte, martiri di un idea di libertà viva. Il connubio etico ed estetico è sostanziale nell opera complessiva di Meggiato, e quest ultima installazione memoriale lo dimostra in modo assolutamente nitido e solenne

23 Expert on the accessibility of museums / Esperto di accessibilità museale Dario Scarpati A spiral of accessibility Can a work of art, an installation, be accessible? How can I interpret the concept of accessibility in a moment, in that infinitesimal and imaginary breath that is an installation? How many and which other visions can a work avowedly connected with sight be able to offer? How many and which communications can a complex work of impact convey without mediation? Actually the Spiral of Life has already achieved its first result in me: I am assailed by an onslaught of serious, powerful questions, mostly without a firm and specific response, but all problematic, and far from banal that leave me at a loss. And that s wonderful! To talk about accessibility in relation to the work of Gianfranco Meggiato I think we have to underline two different aspects. The first is technical, and it is what I have tried to do with my contribution: to make the right measurements so all can enter, the correct heights, the Braille inscriptions in Italian and English. A serious of expedients we agreed on from the start. But this is just the technical side. Then there is the accessibility of the work of art: and here I step aside and simply enjoy it. And I ask myself: what does it mean to be accessible? My dream is to see the work that calls to you, attracts you, without mediators. It is to feel it with the whole body, to discover it by touching, to intuitively perceive it in the odors, the wind. To share the energy of the instant with the work. Such a work can be (warning: can be not is ) accessible, it is true. In the fullest sense of the term: I gain access, completely, without hesitation. I immerse myself. I lose myself in time and space and rediscover a time/space of my own in relation to the work. I immerse myself. And I breathe it: I realize the burlap bag captures the odors of the Palermo that surrounds it: the humid, mellow odor of the sea, together with that of the meusa (bread with spleen) or the arrostuta (grilled meat); the perfume of a thousand tourists and a thousand young people who pass this way every day. The odor of a piazza that has always been in the heart of the city. Una spirale di accessibilità Un opera d arte, una istallazione, può essere accessibile? Come posso declinare il concetto di accessibilità in un momento, in quel soffio infinitesimale ed immaginario che è una istallazione? Quante e quali visioni altre offre un opera dichiaratamente legata alla vista? Quante e quali comunicazioni offre un opera di impatto, complessa, non mediata? Ecco che La Spirale della Vita ha già raggiunto, in me, il primo risultato: mi assale una valanga di domande, serie, potenti, per lo più senza una risposta decisiva ed univoca ma tutte problematiche, non scontate che mi mettono in imbarazzo. E questo è bellissimo! Per parlare di accessibilità rispetto all opera di Gianfranco Meggiato, credo sia necessario sottolineare due aspetti diversi: il primo tecnico; ed è quello in cui ho cercato di dare il mio contributo; le giuste misure per far passare tutti, le altezze da rispettare, le tabelle Braille in italiano ed inglese. Una serie di espedienti sui quali abbiamo concordato fin da subito. Ma questo è solo il lato tecnico. E poi c è l accessibilità dell opera d arte: e qui io mi faccio da parte e semplicemente ne godo. E mi domando: che significa essere accessibile? Il mio sogno è vedere l opera che ti chiama, ti attira a sé, senza mediatori. E sentirla con tutto il corpo, scoprirla toccandola, intuirla dagli odori e dal vento. Condividere con lei l energia di quest attimo. Un opera così può (attenzione: può, non è ) essere accessibile, si. Nell accezione piena del termine: vi accedo, completamente, senza remore. Mi ci immergo. Mi ci perdo nel tempo e nello spazio e mi ritrovo in un mio tempo/spazio nel confronto con lei. Mi immergo. E la respiro: e trovo che il sacco di juta imprigiona gli odori della Palermo che la abbraccia: l odore umido e pastoso del mare insieme a quello della meusa o dell arrostuta; il profumo dei mille turisti e dei mille ragazzi che ogni giorno passano qui. L odore di una piazza da sempre nel cuore della città. 43

24 It is an odor you cannot describe in words but you can sense it, with the rustling of the bags, the footsteps (or wheels) that cross it, entering, playing. It is an aroma/breeze on the skin/wind that brings stories and envelops you. And then you see! You see a trench that rises from the ground; a trench that conceals the path and hides you. It tells you it protects you from the enemy, that trench. And instead it takes your breath away, it precludes any encounter with any other; it divides, and thus it rules. You have to go beyond; to reach the heart of the work. You have to get beyond this spiral of death, war/mafia/fear, to conquer the Spiral of Life. You have to reach the heart of the world : to go and see it, feel it, smell it without mediation. I don t want official explanations ; I want my explanation. I want to conquer it with every inch of my skin. I want to surrender to the story of the statue/sandbags/path mine. It is a work that leaves your hands dirty and your heart full. It grabs you and eats you while you are grabbing and eating it. Gianfranco and I have been acquainted for two weeks, but we grew up together. We have both walked through our spiral, our trench, to reach free thought. This is the accessibility I dream of finding in art: me and the work together in an intense, direct, total dialogue. The two of us, telling each other about ourselves, feeling each other. Those bags began to call to me from a distance, at first glimpse; and we told each other stories. An experience that is not to be described, but to be lived. Gianfranco, thank you so much. *** I ve been bringing friends and colleagues to see the installation in the last few days: I want to see if I can glimpse my same emotions in their eyes. I am fascinated by one common factor: anyone who approaches the work loses any talkative impulse when entering the Spiral: they no longer speak. They advance through the bags in silence, searching for something, a name, a memory and then they re-explode in front of My free thought. The intended fusion between subject-person and subjectwork has taken place. E un odore che non descrivi a parole ma lo senti, con i suoi fruscii sui sacchi, con le pedate (o le ruote) che attraversano, entrano, giocano. E un profumo/brezza sulla pelle/vento che porta storie e che ti avvolge. E poi vedi! Vedi una trincea che si alza da terra; una trincea che nasconde il cammino e ti nasconde. Dice che ti protegge dal nemico, la trincea. E invece ti toglie il fiato, evita ogni incontro con qualsiasi altro; divide e, perciò, impera. Bisogna andare oltre; arrivare al cuore dell opera. Bisogna superare questa spirale della morte guerra/mafia/paura per conquistare La Spirale della Vita. Bisogna arrivare al cuore del mondo : andarlo a vedere, sentire, odorare senza mediazione. Non voglio spiegazioni ufficiali ; voglio la mia spiegazione. Voglio conquistarla con ogni centimetro della mia pelle. Voglio abbandonarmi al racconto della statua/dei sacchi di juta/del cammino mio. E un opera che ti lascia le mani sporche ed il cuore pieno. Ti prende e ti mangia, mentre tu prendi e mangi lei. Io e Gianfranco ci conosciamo da due settimane, ma siamo cresciuti insieme. Entrambi abbiamo percorso la nostra spirale, la nostra trincea, per raggiungere un pensiero libero. Questa è l accessibilità che sogno di trovare nell arte: io e l opera insieme, in un dialogo fitto, diretto, totale. Io e lei, che ci raccontiamo, ci sentiamo. A me, quei sacchi, hanno cominciato a chiamare da lontano, appena intravisti; e ci siamo raccontati storie. Un esperienza da non descrivere: da vivere. Gianfranco, davvero grazie. *** In questi giorno sto portando a vedere l istallazione amici e colleghi: voglio vedere se trovo nei loro occhi la mia emozione. Mi affascina un dato comune: chiunque si avvicini all opera, perde ogni loquacità appena entra nella Spirale: non parla più. Si inoltra tra i sacchi in silenzio, cercando qualcosa, un nome, un ricordo per poi ri-esplodere davanti a Il mio pensiero libero. E avvenuta quella auspicata fusione tra soggetto-persona e soggetto-opera

28 Curator / Curatore Daniela Brignone Il pensiero libero oltre l oscurità From the dawn of time, signs and symbols have regulated the life of peoples that took themselves as reference points to interpret the reality perceived by the senses. Myth, worship, experience, tradition, wisdom, philosophy and science were intertwined, often crossed by sentiment and instinct. Transmitted over the centuries, repeated adopted by various civilizations, also with different meanings, they constitute a legacy of knowledge passed down to our time, never vanishing but constantly enhanced by new meanings. Sicily, blessed by the gods, is an ideal place in which to observe the intertwining of myths and archaic rituals, symbols and beliefs, elements and ways of living forcefully suspended in time but closely connected to a contemporary condition that comes to terms with the past. The Sicilian capital has been chosen by Gianfranco Meggiato as the setting for his latest installation, The Spiral of Life. He works on symbols to explain his worldview, drawing on memories of traditions dating back to a distant past, reinterpreted to narrate reality, respecting their semantics and providing a key with which to analyze the present. In its formal essence and its strong symbolic and expressive impact, the spiral with its circular movement suggests a mysticism that investigates the meaning of life and death. Crossing the threshold implies taking a path of knowledge that fosters meditation and leads to spiritual uplift. To rise again through shadows into the light, purified and conscious of another reality, is the deepest sense of Meggiato s work that addresses human tragedies as a whole, and in Palermo chooses to assign a profound meaning to the sacrifice of the victims of the mafia massacres that have marked the territory. The installation takes on the symbolic function of a memorial to grant impact to the many names written on the burlap bags that form the walls of the spiral. Each name has a story, the power of a summons, a silent narrative of fragments of life erased by lucid madness, making realities that are intangible by now concretely emerge. A bag and a name have the power to call forth dramatic memories, Il pensiero libero oltre l oscurità Sin dall alba dei tempi, segni e simboli regolavano la vita dei popoli che prendevano gli stessi come punti di riferimento per interpretare la realtà sensibile. Mito, sacralità, esperienza, tradizione, saggezza, filosofia e scienza si compenetravano, spesso unite al sentimento e all istinto. Trasmessi nei secoli, più volte adottati dalle varie civiltà con significati anche differenti, costituiscono un patrimonio di conoscenza pervenuto nei nostri giorni, mai scomparsi ma arricchiti di nuovi significati. La Sicilia, luogo baciato dagli dei, rappresenta il luogo ideale ove rintracciare i miti ed i riti arcaici, i simboli e le credenze, elementi e modi di vivere decisamente sospesi nel tempo ma strettamente connessi ad una contemporaneità che fa i conti con il passato. E il capoluogo siciliano il luogo scelto da Gianfranco Meggiato per ambientarvi la sua ultima opera, La Spirale della Vita. Egli lavora sui simboli per spiegare la sua visione del mondo, attingendo a memorie di tradizioni risalenti a passati remoti, rivisitate per raccontare il reale, rispettandone la semantica e conferendo una chiave di lettura per interpretare il presente. Nella sua essenzialità formale, ma dalla forte pregnanza simbolica ed espressiva, La Spirale con il suo moto circolare evoca un misticismo che indaga il senso della vita e della morte. Varcarne la soglia vuol dire intraprendere un cammino di conoscenza che induce alla meditazione e conduce all elevazione spirituale. Risalire le tenebre per affiorare alla luce, purificati e consapevoli di un altra realtà, è il significato più profondo dell opera di Meggiato che accomuna le tragedie dell umanità e che a Palermo sceglie di dare un senso profondo al sacrificio delle vittime delle stragi per mafia che hanno segnato il territorio, assumendo così la funzione simbolica di un memoriale per dare voce ai tantissimi nomi segnati nei sacchi di juta che delimitano le pareti della Spirale. Ogni nome ha una storia, ha la potenza di un evocazione, un racconto silenzioso di frammenti di vita cancellati da una lucida follia, realtà ormai intangibili che emergono concretamente. Un sacco e un nome hanno il potere di riesumare ricordi drammatici, scolpiti nella 53

29 sculpted in the collective memory of an unpredictable war. A pain and a sense of impotence that are periodically renewed. Presence and memory of a tormented land that has to invent a future for itself, without forgetting the past. A story that cyclically returns, as the image of the spiral emphasizes, of ebbs and flows, rises and falls, choices and dictates. Meggiato traces a path that starting from history contributes to ideally rewrite the future of a territory, restoring meaning to the struggle for individual freedom, to reawaken spirits from indifference in order to glimpse the light. His work thus combines the values of art and culture with ethical and civil virtues. The spiral becomes a container of content, taking on the value of an individual voyage that from birth leads to the center, to intimacy and consciousness. The path winds through the sandbags heaped at the sides, memories of wars and tragedies that also comprise that of the 878 innocent victims of the mafia, unwitting heroes of a struggle with no way out, 878 seeds planted in history: a warpath suggested by the odors and atmospheres, bringing out the expressive qualities of the material, ennobled to bear the names, making them immortal. The choice of following the path towards the light or turning back towards the darkness is left up to free will. What is certain is that those who enter will feel a sense of oppression and disquiet, but also of disorientation, in a structural conception that resembles that of the enormous spirals of Richard Serra, also triggered by an inner urgency, in which the artist with great sensitivity communicates an emotional and sensory experience for the observer. The presence of the sandbags reminds us of another war, the one experienced by Alberto Burri, who in 1944, following detention in Texas by the Americans, decided to begin his career as an artist, conducting research on humble materials and everyday objects that lent themselves to the interpretation of an alienating condition, an absence of light, color and life. Placed in front of Palazzo Riso, Meggiato s work bears witness to another rebirth: that of a building that wounded by yet another war, the one that destroyed it in Meggiato raises his work towards a supernatural dimension, as a decisive motor for the reawakening of the spirit through a winding path that leads to regeneration, awareness of the self and vital processes. The work of art is not for the eyes, but for the soul, said Adolfo Wildt, and Meggiato is fully aware of this truth. At the end of the journey, a free thought rises to the sky and seems to meet it, the victory over pain and death that blossoms from silent mourning, free of any resentment. A white, pure, vibrant presence stands out, ethereal, amidst the sandbags, in an alternation of empty and full parts; a tongue memoria collettiva di una guerra imprevedibile. Un dolore e un senso di impotenza che si rinnovano periodicamente. Presenza e memoria, di una terra martoriata che si ritrova ad inventarsi un futuro, senza dimenticare. Una storia che si ripresenta ciclicamente, come sottolinea anche la semantica della Spirale, di corsi e ricorsi, di elevazioni e di cadute, di scelte e di imposizioni. Meggiato traccia un percorso che, partendo dalla storia contribuisce a riscrivere idealmente il futuro di un territorio, ridando un senso alla lotta per la libertà individuale, per ridestare gli animi dall indifferenza al fine di intravedere la luce. La sua opera coniuga così i valori dell arte e della cultura con quelli etici e civili. La Spirale diviene un contenitore di contenuti, assumendo la valenza di un viaggio individuale che dalla nascita conduce al centro, all intimità e alla coscienza. Il percorso si snoda tra i sacchi ammucchiati lateralmente, memorie di guerre e di tragedie che accolgono anche quella delle 878 vittime innocenti della mafia, eroi inconsapevoli di una lotta senza scampo, 878 semi piantati nella storia: un sentiero di guerra di cui suggerisce gli odori e le atmosfere, esaltando le qualità espressive della materia, nobilitata per accoglierne i nomi per renderli immortali. La scelta di proseguire nel cammino verso la luce o di tornare indietro, verso l oscurità, è affidata al libero arbitrio. Quel che è certo è che chi entra prova un senso di oppressione e di inquietudine, ma anche di smarrimento, in una concezione strutturale che lo accomuna alle enormi spirali di Richard Serra, anch esse scaturite da un urgenza interiore in cui l artista, con grande sensibilità, comunica un esperienza emozionale e sensoriale che l osservatore può rivivere. Una presenza, quella dei sacchi di juta, che richiama un altra guerra, quella vissuta da Alberto Burri che, nel 1944, a seguito della detenzione in Texas da parte degli angloamericani, lo induce a iniziare la sua carriera artistica e ad intraprendere la ricerca lavorando sui materiali poveri, oggetti di uso comune che meglio si prestavano ad interpretare una condizione straniante, un assenza, di luce, di colore, di vita. Posta davanti a Palazzo Riso, l opera di Meggiato testimonia un altra rinascita: quella di un edificio ferito da un ennesima guerra, quella che nel 1943 ne decretò la distruzione. Meggiato eleva la sua opera ad una dimensione sovrannaturale, quale motore determinante per il risveglio dell anima attraverso un cammino tortuoso che conduce alla rivivificazione e alla presa di coscienza di sé e dei processi vitali. L opera d arte non è per gli occhi ma per l anima, sosteneva Adolfo Wildt, e Meggiato ne è pienamente consapevole. 44 Biography Gianfranco Meggiato was born on 26 August 1963 in Venice, where he attended the Istituto Statale d Arte. He studied sculptural decoration and ceramics, and met the charismatic Prof. Loris Zambon, a Venetian sculpture who had been a student of Viani. In the fi rst year of high school he made a panel in Vicenza stone that was shown in 1979 in a group show at Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa on Piazza San Marco in Venice. Later, in 1984, he returned to Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, showing two panels in semi-plastic fi re clay. In his research, Meggiato looks to the great masters of the 20th century: Brancusi for his pursuit of the essential, Moore for the inner-outer relationship of his maternity scenes, Calder for the opening to space in his works. The artist shapes his sculptures on the basis of biomorphic tissues and the theme of the labyrinth, which symbolizes the twisted path of man in search of the self, attempting to reveal the precious interior sphere. Meggiato thus invents the concept of introsculpture in which the gaze of the observer is drawn towards the inside of the work, not simply lingering over the outer surfaces. On a formal level space and light do not border the work, the slide over it as if it were an object in the round, and penetrate its interior, wrapping lattices and tangles, reaching the point of illuminating the central sphere as the ideal point of arrival. Nella sua opera Meggiato guarda ai grandi maestri del 900: Brancusi per la sua ricerca dell essenzialità, Moore per il rapporto interno-esterno delle sue maternità e Calder per l apertura allo spazio delle sue opere. Lo spazio entra nelle opere e il vuoto diviene importante quanto il pieno. L artista modella le sue sculture ispirandosi al tessuto biomorfo e al labirinto, che simboleggia il tortuoso percorso dell uomo teso a trovare se stesso e a svelare la preziosa sfera interiore. Meggiato inventa così il concetto di introscultura in cui lo sguardo dell osservatore viene attirato verso l interiorità dell opera, non limitandosi alle superfi ci esterne. A livello formale lo spazio e la luce non delimitano l opera, scivolandole addosso come fosse un tuttotondo, ma penetrano al suo interno avvolgendone i reticoli e i grovigli e arrivando ad illuminare la sfera centrale quale ideale punto di arrivo.
